TN accident victim's kin get record

CHENNAI: In one of the highest accident compensation settlements in the state, two
private insurance companies have agreed to pay 1.76 crore to the family of a
corporate executive who died in 2009. The settlement was signed at a recent lok
adalat organized by Madras high court.
Thiagarajan, 48, an assistant general manager with Aircel in Chennai, died in a car
crash on November 23, 2009 while on his way to attend a funeral of a relative near
Perambalur. He had hired a cab late in the night after hearing about the death of the
relative. While nearing Villupuram, the cab collided with a lorry heading in the
opposite direction.
Thiagarajan's wife T Vijayrani and son T Deepan moved a court in Perambalur
claiming compensation for his death. Thiagarajan had a salary of 24 lakh per
annum. The case was transferred to a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.
Counsels for the family, K Kuppusamy and T D Vasu said while Thiagrajan died on
the spot, his wife Vijayarani and daughter Vasantha suffered grievous injuries.

The pending case was listed before the national lok adalat on March 12, 2016.
During the proceedings, the family reached an agreement with the insurer of the
lorry, Royal Sundaram Insurance Company and the cab's insurer Future Generali

India Insurance Company. Royal Sundaram would pay 90% of the insurance amount
of Rs1.76 crore, and Future Generali th rest.
On Wednesday, Justice Satish K Agnihotri, executive chairman, Tamil Nadu Legal
Service Authority (TNLSA) along with Justice K K Sasidharan and Justice S
Vaidyanathan handed over the amount to the family.

The national lok adalat was in November 2013 had awarded 75 lakh to a 38-year-old
woman who was paralyzed after a road accident in 2004.
