TEAM LEADERS (SL RANK)

TODAY’S GAME: Game 1 of a 5-game series at the Mississippi Braves (ATL)... 4th and final series between the clubs in 2016
...Are 21-16 all-time against the Atlanta Braves’ Double-A affiliate, including 9-5 this year, and 3-2 at Trustmark Park in 2016...The
Shuckers are coming off an 8-2 homestand against the Braves (5-0) and Jackson Generals (3-2).
FOUR BILOXI PITCHERS ONE-HIT GENERALS IN SERIES’ RUBBER MATCH: The Shuckers claimed their second rubber
match of the season with a 2-0 whitewash of the Jackson Generals on Wednesday night at MGM Park. The win capped off an 8-2
homestand for the Shuckers as they wrapped up their home schedule for the 2016 regular season with a 41-28 record. Biloxi also
capped off its best month ever with an 18-11 record.
Wednesday was Biloxi’s (31-34, 70-64) turn to strike first, as the home team treated its fans to an early 2-0 lead, thanks to a two-run
laser onto the berm in right off the bat of Brett Phillips (1x3, HR, 2 RBI, R). Tyrone Taylor (2x3, R, BB) worked a full count to start
out the Shuckers’ offense before lifting a single to shallow left-center. Phillips then sent an 0-2 delivery from Bryan Evans over the wall
in right for his 16th home run of the season, giving Biloxi the two-run advantage.
Angel Ventura (2-4) made the lead stick in his ninth start of the season for Biloxi. The right-hander held the Generals off the
scoreboard for six innings while allowing just one hit against the team with the best batting average in the league (.267) coming into
Wednesday. The 23-year-old recorded his third quality start of the season, and added a walk and six strikeouts to his line.
Preston Gainey carried the moment on the mound with two strikeouts in the seventh, and Jacob Barnes worked around a oneout error for a scoreless eighth in his final rehab appearance. Stephen Kohlscheen (SV, 23) tossed a perfect ninth to record his
23rd save in 25 chances.
TODAY’S STARTING PITCHER: RHP Luis Ortiz makes his sixth Biloxi start since being acquired by Milwaukee from Texas on
Aug. 1. Ortiz has a 2-1 record and 0.42 ERA. Ortiz didn’t give up his first earned run until his fifth start and 18.1 IP.
START ME UP: Biloxi’s starting pitching over the 10-game homestand combined to allow just 12 runs (8 earned) in 61.1 innings,
a 1.18 ERA against the Braves and Generals, while giving up 43 hits, walking 19 and striking out 56.
SHUCKERS FINISH AUGUST WITH CLUB-RECORD 18 WINS: The Shuckers’ had a club record 18 wins in August (18-11) in
August and won 12 of the last 16 games. The squad has pieced together a .256 team average (2nd, SL) and league-best 3.02
ERA. Biloxi scored 113 runs (3.9 runs/game) through 29 games. In 29 games in July, Biloxi hit just .206 as a team, with 62 runs
scored (2.14 runs/game), and posted a mark of 11-18.
NO LAUGHING MATTER: OF Brett Phillips hit 3 HR’s over his last nine games and two in his last four, giving him a team-leading
16 on the year. Over his last 10 games, the Seminole, Fla. native is batting .280 with 3 HR’s and 9 RBI.
RACE FOR THE PLAYOFFS: The Shuckers are eliminated from the division race, but still have a chance of making the playoffs.
They can make it if Pensacola clinches the second half and the Shuckers have the next best overall record. Pensacola currently
sits 1.5 games behind the Braves for first place, and the Shuckers are just 0.5 games behind Mississippi in the wild card standings.
The team finishes the season. Pensacola opens a 5-game series at Birmingham today.
JUNGMANN EARNS ACCOLADE: Taylor Jungmann was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 22-28
on Monday. The right-hander shut out the Mississippi Braves over eight innings on Tuesday, Aug. 23, scattering three hits and
striking out eight in the 2-0 victory.
BRINGING BACK BARNES: Brewers’ RHP Jacob Barnes (right elbow soreness) concluded his rehab assignment from Milwaukee on Wednesday night with a scoreless eighth inning. Barnes tossed 2.2 innings and allowed two hits and struck out four in
three outings. Barnes was placed on the 15-day DL on July 26 by the Brewers.
SWEET HOME MGM PARK: The 8-2 homestand pushed the Shuckers up to 13 games over .500 (41-28) at MGM Park for the 2016
season. Biloxi went 38-30 games as the home team during its inaugural campaign (23-20 at MGM Park and 15-10 at alternate venues).
