This study aims to make alternative glue out of Styrofoam. In making this projec
t, the researchers did various tests and procedures. The proponents tested the e
ffectiveness of Pure Acetone and Styrofoam when they are mixed together. The org
anic compound (CH3)2CO, or acetone, is a translucent flammable liquid that exhib
its a high degree of solvency. Many compounds are soluble when exposed to aceton
e. Styrofoam is created through alteration of polystyrene. Styrofoam is soluble
in acetone, but is not soluble in other liquids, such as water. This occurs beca
use of the acetone's solvent properties. The Styrofoam's porous structure allows
a large volume to dissolve readily in a relatively small amount of acetone. The
experiment started by putting the acetone on the bowl followed by placing the S
tyrofoam in it. The Styrofoam dissolved slowly. When the researchers saw that so
me of the parts aren t yet dissolved, we used the banana cue stick to push and sti
r the Styrofoam to be thawed quickly. Then they added more Styrofoam until the m
ixture turned into a sticky substance like glue. It was followed by putting the
mixture in the jar and placed the cap tightly so that it will not get dry. After
doing all these procedures, they proceeded in testing the product. The research
ers found out that the alternative glue made out of Styrofoam is better than any
other glue for it doesn t contain toxics and can also do what normal glue can do.
The solubility of Styrofoam in acetone holds significance for recycling purpose
s. Extraction of polystyrene from the acetone solution allows the manufacture of
new Styrofoam and prevents used Styrofoam from entering landfills. The product
teaches people how to recycle and to save Mother Earth.
II. TITLE: Styrofoam as Alternative Glue
Pollution is one of the major problems the world is facing today. Some reasons a
re the non-biodegradable wastes like plastics, Styrofoam and cans. Styrofoam hel
ped a lot in our society but it is also one of the pollutants that cause the des
truction of our planet. As of today Styrofoam is banned in some cities and count
ries, people carelessly dispose them everywhere, because of that hundreds of kil
ograms of Styrofoam are littered. Even if these wastes decreased it is still har
mful for us because of the chemicals it may release.
Because of these, the researchers decided to conduct this investigatory project
and they started to have a research on how humans can recycle Styrofoam. Then th
ey come up with an item that cannot only help the environment but also the ones
who are going to use this product, glue. This glue can help reduce the number of
Styrofoam that may destroy our environment if thrown away.

Recycle Styrofoam: Make Your Own Glue
In the last article on Styrofoam, we looked at various ways in which people were
recycling at home. Here we are going to go over a process in which you can turn
Styrofoam into a super glue at home through a discovery that comes from a Japan
ese researcher at Sony.
Tsutomu Noguchi of the Sony Research Center found that the oil from orange peels
would dissolve polystyrene. By using a product called Limonene, that contains .
5% of the orange peel oil Noguchi found that the polystyrene would break down in
to a liquid form that created a very strong glue and can be used to create styre
ne pellets that go back into the production of more polystyrene. Currently, the
Sony Corporation is the only major company to mass recycle polystyrene in this w
ay through a full system that they call The Orange Network System.

A. MATERIALS
B. PROCEDURE
1. Put the acetone on the bowl (according to the desired amount of glue that wil
l be made)
2. Place the Styrofoam one at a time only in the bowl of acetone, the Styrofoam
will be dissolved slowly.
3. When some parts are not yet dissolved, use the banana cue stick to push and s
tir the Styrofoam to be dissolved completely.
4. Just add more Styrofoam until the mixture looks like glue. (according to how
sticky you want the glue will be)
5. When you re finish, put the mixture in the jar and put the cap tightly to prese
rve the stickiness of the glue so that it will not be dried.
6. If you ll use it, you may use a Popsicle stick or any object that is suitable t
o apply the glue.

Our product can be helpful in many different ways. It can be helpful in offices,
schools and even in our houses. This is also an environment friendly product. O
ur product will be using Styrofoam which is one of the major causes of pollution
. Hence, it can help lessen the garbage in our environment.
The researchers recommend that they should follow carefully the said instruction
s. Or, they research more about this product and how can they improve the produc
t's stickiness using other alternative materials and the main component, which i
s the Styrofoam.
