Not many of us can predict what God has in store for us each day, let alone next
week or next year. We would like to know (we think) but the problem is we would
know the bad things right along with the good things. The strain would be too much
for us. There is good reason for us to trust God with our days, weeks, and years:
He is the only One who can handle the pressure of that information. He tells us
specifically that He has a plan for us but He doesn’t tell us what it is. He wants it to be enough for us
to know that He does have a plan and that it is a plan to prosper us and not to harm us. That should
be enough but still, we make plans and then are disappointed when those things don’t come to pass.
I’m not saying we should never make plans but that we should slow down and make them asking
ourselves, “How does this line up with God’s plan for me?” and then holding on to them very loosely.
Recently, I had an emergency appendectomy. That was certainly not part of my plan but what do
you do? Is it God’s will that we have illnesses that sideline us for a while? There are many argu-
ments about that very question but the point for us to focus on here is during those times, God gives
us an exciting opportunity to know Him more, listen to Him harder, to think about our attitude of grati-
tude, and obey Him more readily. Maybe a time to slow down from the busyness of our lives, out of
the rush of the moment and our plans, and into the peace of His presence. These are the times
when we can truly say, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many
kinds….” (James 1:2) I wonder how many of us use those times as a restful respite in a chaotic and
hectic world. I realize that while you’re sick or in pain it is challenging to change the focus from “me”
to blessing God but I think that is part of His plan for us: to bless Him in spite of what’s happening to
us or going on around us. His plans for us
are to “prosper and not to harm, plans to Kinsley (age 3) and
