FORPARENTS,SCOUTS,ANDLEADERS

StartinginJuneourBeardenbecomesaWebelospatrol.Thisisasignificantstepforwardandabigger
dealthanmovingfromTigertoWolforWolftoBear.Webeloshaveonefootinthecubscoutworldand
onefootintheboyscoutworld.Thenexttwoyearsarewhenleaderswillteachthemthebasicsthey
needtoknowtosucceedinboyscouts,whereindependence,selfconfidence,andteamworkamongboys
arecriticalassets.ExperiencehasrepeatedlyshownthataWebelosgiventheresponsibilitiesand
treatmentdueayoungman,andisthussufficientlypreparedforboyscouts,willstayinscoutslongerand
benefitfromtheprogramfarmorethanaWebelostreatedlikealittlekid.Whilerecognizingthatourboys
are,indeed,still
boys
andwellaffordthemeveryopportunitytoenjoyboyhood,wealsowantthemto
growandlearnhowtofunctionasanindependentperson.Tothateffectthenexttwoyearswilloperatea
littledifferentlythanprioryears.Belowaresomeofthechanges,expectations,andopportunitiesthat
wellbeexperiencingasapatrol.

Scoutswill:
Begiven,andbeexpectedtohandle,moreresponsibility.
Learnanduseleadershipskills(includingturnsatDennerandAssistantDenner),teambuilding
skills,andselfreliance.
Beexpectedtoexhibitselfcontrolandself/groupdisciplineatmeetingsandevents.
EarnandconsistentlyretaintheprivilegetousetheBoyScoutsign,salute,andhandshake.
MemorizetheScoutLaw,ScoutOath,andOutdoorCodeandapplythesetotheireverydaylives.
Showleadershipandmentoringtoyoungerscoutsatmeetingsandevents.
Readtheirhandbookseveryweek(preferablymore)
and
bringthemtoeverymeeting.
Wearuniformstoeverymeetingunlessotherwiseinstructed.
Doallassignedhomeworktocompleteadventures.Aheadofpaceachievementcompletionis
encouraged,aslongastheydontgetsofaraheadastobebored.
Berequiredtodemonstrateknowledge/competencyofachievementsbeforeWebelosleaderssign
off.Whilekeepinginmindthat"DoYourBest"istheguidingthreshold,Webelosshouldstillbe
able(tothebestoftheirability)toretainknowledgeofanadventureoncethey'veearnedit.Thus
wemaydorepeatlessonsonsomeimportantskills(firstaid,knots,camping,etc.)tomakesure
thekidsareretainingandgainingcompetence.
Leadershavetheauthoritytodisapproverequirementsifthescoutdidntdothe
requirementorsimplywatchedsomeoneelsedoit.
Someadventurescannotbecompletelyearnedatsummercampastheyrequiremultiweek
periodsofobservation/effort.Stronger,Faster,Higherisonesuchadventure.Howeverthe
scoutscangetagoodstartatcampandfinishtherequirementovertherestofsummer.
BeselfmotivatedtoearnadditionaladventuresandcubscoutawardssuchasOutdoorActivity,
SummertimeActivity,WorldConservation,religiousemblems,Nova,andSuperNova.
Attendmultipleovernightpack/dencampingtripsbothwithandwithoutparentsandassume
campingresponsibilitiesincludingbutnotlimitedto:weatherpreparation,menuplanning,
budgeting,groceryshopping,activityplanning,flagduties,campsetup,tentandshelterstandup,
foodpreparation,cooking,KPduty,firestarting/handling,andcampfireprogram.
BeginvisitingBoyScouttroopswiththedentoobserveandinteractwithscoutsandleaders
attendatleastoneBoyScoutcampoutoroutdoorevent.
Chooseapatrolname.Creativityisencouragedirreverenceisfine(toapoint),crassnessisnot.
WebelosleadersandCubmasterretaintherighttoveto.

Parentswill:
Serveastheden/patrolcommittee:
Activelyhelpplanovernighters,fieldtrips,serviceprojects,demonstrations,visitors,and
otherpatrol/Webelosactivities.
Volunteertalents,skills,andconnectionstohelptheleadersteachadventures.
Facilitatescoutsfullparticipation,especiallywithfieldtripsandoutdoor/overnightactivities.
Attendovernightcampingtripsifrequested.Themoreexperiencetheboyshavewithcamping,
thelessparentswillneedtoattend.

Provide(purchaseorborrow)scoutswiththeequipmenttheyneedforcamping,hiking,etc.This
especiallyincludesanappropriatelysizedtentandanappropriatelyratedsleepingbag.
Helpthepatrolfinanciallyifneeded(supplies,crafts,food,etc.)Webelosleaderspayalot
outofpockettosupplythepatrolwithnecessarymaterials,anditgetsexpensivequickly.
Notcheckoffanachievementiftheydon'tthinktheirscoutisdoinghisbest.
Allowtheirchildrenthespaceandfreedomtostrive,fail,andtryagain.
WhentheyareTigersweholdtheirhand.WhentheyareWolveswestandbehindthem
withaguidinghandontheirshoulder.WhentheyareBearswestepbackwithourhands
outtocatchthem.WhentheyareWebeloswetake5stepsback,readytoprotectthem,
butlettingthemblazetheirownpath.
Letleadershandlediscipline,unlesstheproblembecomestrulydisruptive.

EnsureWebelosarefullypreparedforBoyScouts.
CoordinateamongWebelospatrolstoensureconsistentqualityandprogress.
Provideadenchief,ifpossible.
Performperiodicuniforminspectionswillincludecheckingforhandbooks.
Increasinglytreattheboyslikeyoungmen,preparingthemfortheindependenceofBoyScouts.
Teachleadershipandteamskills,includingimplementingtheDennersystem.
TeachthePatrolMethod,whichisthekeytotheboyledorganizationofaBoyScouttroop.
Doourhomeworktoteachadventuresproperly,orfindacompetentresourcetoteachthem.
Provideregularoutdoor,service,andovernightopportunitiesincludingpatrolcampouts,pack/troop
campouts,andWebeloreeparticipation.
Devoteattentiontohelpingscoutsbephysicallystrong,mentallyawake,andmorallystraight.
Ensurescoutsareactuallylearning/completingrequirementsbeforesigningoffonthem.
ProvideeveryreasonableopportunityforWebelostomakerank,especiallyArrowofLight.
Provideotheractivitiesastimeallowsforawards/achievementssuchasLNT,OutdoorActivity,
WorldConservation,STEMNova/Supernova,etc.
