COVER STORY

an you believe its been 21 years

since Jennifer Aniston first
appeared on TV screens as
Rachel Green in Friends? And
yet somehow the 46-year-old
doesnt seem to have aged. At all.
With her size-eight figure (shes
a petite 5ft 4in) and toned legs
and arms, Jen still has a body
that most twentysomethings
would (and do) dream of.
Weve spoken exclusively to
Kathy Kaehler, who, as one of
Jens brand new trainers, has all
the secrets about her anti-ageing
routine.Jen doesnt do any
exercise that she doesnt love,
and she makes sure what she does
do fits into her busy lifestyle,
Kathy tells us. As well as yoga,

spinning and Pilates, she also does a mixture

of cardio and strength exercises, which are
the secret to that fab bod.
And Kathy says those body blasts, which
combine running with quick-fire toning
workouts, are what has sculpted
and shaped her ageless physique.
But while Jens focused on looking
her best for her upcoming wedding
to fianc Justin Theroux, 43, shes
also committed to her long-term
goals of keeping her skin wrinklefree and her mind healthy.
Jen knows that looking young
comes from a holistic approach
to life and taking care of your mind,
body and soul, adds Kathy. If youre
stressed, youll look tired. If you
make an effort to be happy, itll show
on your face; youll look energised.

JENs WORKOUT
5 MINUTES + 5 ExErcISES ThaT do ThE TrIck
Jen has the body she does because she makes sure she moves
and does something pretty much every single day of her life,
Kathy reveals. If shes away working on a movie, shell set
her alarm just a little bit earlier in the morning and go for
a ten-minute run before her shower. These are quick-fire
five-minute exercise blasts that Jen loves. Do them in quick
succession or spread them out throughout the day.

WORKOUT 1

WORKOUT 2

the edge of a chair, lower yourself
downwards, then lift yourself back

end in your hand, bend forward
and stretch the band behind you.
one minute of push-ups

one minute of floor push-ups.

one minute of star jumps.

one minute of squats.
one minute of
commandos: Start on your
stomach, keep your back flat,
do a push-up, then tuck one
knee under, before returning
to your start push-up
position. repeat with the
other knee, kathy explains.
Two minutes of lunging
(a minute on each leg).

by your ears. raise your torso off the
floor, squeezing your shoulder blades.

COVER STORY

I dont believe in calorie counting, says

Kathy. Jen eats at least three times a day,
or ideally five small but nutritious meals.
I advise everyone to go out and buy
your food for the week ahead on a
Sunday, so youre not tempted to pick
up takeaway food or pre-packaged ready
meals on your way home on weekdays.
Sensible stuff. But are treats allowed?
Jen would never sit there and eat an
entire pack of cookies, Kathy concedes,
But she would have one if she really
fancies it and savour every bite. Hurrah!
Jen does everything in moderation,
adds Kathy. Shell have a glass of red
wine with a friend and really enjoy it, rather
than two bottles and feel terrible for days.

Jens Anti-Ageing
DAily Diet
Shes the queen of eating healthily, but she also packs
in immunity-boosting, anti-ageing secret superfoods

BREAKFAST
Jen starts the day with lemon and hot water this gets
your metabolism going, says Kathy. Lemon is packed
with vitamin C, which increases collagen production.
Goodbye, wrinkles! Then she has scrambled eggs with
diced chilli for a kick, along with a side of steamed kale.

LUNCH
Jen likes courgette, asparagus and steamed white
fish with lemon, garlic and walnuts, Kathy explains.
Walnuts are a vital source of vitamin B and omega-3
just seven walnuts a day will improve your skin tone.

DINNER
She might have a low-calorie, Mexican taco filled with
lean grilled chicken and a hot spicy salad with cucumber,
tomatoes and veggies. Spices like chilli regulate blood
pressure, burn calories and help with post-workout aches.

SNACKS

You can drink red

wine and still get
Jens bod. Phew!

Justin often whips up a superfood afternoon snack for

them both to enjoy in the garden, Kathy says. He makes
a cup of green tea with fresh mint, with a few squares
of high-quality dark chocolate, a small handful of
blueberries or goji berries and a sprinkle of chia seeds.

People are rescued from

the Aegean Sea after
another migrant boat
capsizes on 20 April

Its Heartbreaking All

They Want Is A Better Life
As Katie Hopkins brands migrants cockroaches and more
than 800 die in the Mediterranean, Cynthia Masiyiwa, 23, from
Zimbabwe, tells her personal story of the desperation many face

words: Giselle wainwriGht, corinne redfern photo: associated press

hen I saw the news

about the migrants
killed while trying to
reach Europe, I had
to look away. Fleeing
Libya in hope of asylum in Italy, they
were drowned in their hundreds as
their fishing boat capsized in the
Mediterranean. And its not a one-off.
More than 1,750 men, women and
children have perished in that sea
since the start of the year.
I know first-hand how desperate
the victims would have been for
a better life. They would have
sacrificed everything they had to get
that far they were running away
from abuse, war, political violence
or forced marriage. After all, what
would you do? Stay in your country
and die there, or die trying to leave?
Thats why I was so angry when
I read Sun columnist Katie Hopkins
recent comments about using
gunships to deal with migrant
boats coming to the UK. Show me
pictures of coffins, show me bodies

floating in water... I still dont care,

she wrote. Make no mistake, these
migrants are like cockroaches. When
you look at the positive contribution
migrants have made to the UK, her
words werent just racist and offensive,
they were ridiculous, too.
I was 15 when I left Zimbabwe to
come to the UK on my own. It was
my parents decision and it was
heartbreaking as they couldnt come
with me, but there was just too much
violence in our country for me to stay.
I was lucky enough to get on a flight
out of the country, but I was terrified.
In the UK, I stayed with my sister and
was desperate to make friends. Instead,
I was kicked in lessons and told to go
home. Then my mother passed away
from leukaemia in Zimbabwe. I was still
just a teenager, grieving and dealing
with racism. At the same time, I was
going through the asylum system,
seeking immigration status in a place
where nobody seemed to want me.
Eventually, I had the opportunity
to stand up in a school assembly and

What
would
you do?
Stay in
your
country
and die
there,
or die
trying
to leave?

tell my story. When I finished my

speech, there was silence until one
boy jumped up and said sorry for
the way hed treated me. Hed had
no idea what Id been through. The
other students agreed theyd read
in the newspapers that migrants
like me came to the UK to take
British peoples jobs. So I know how
dangerous Katie Hopkins words
can be not to mention the fact
theyre untrue. Immigration boosts
the economy. I co-founded my own
company, Brand Design Solutions,
three years ago to establish platforms
for young people in the creative
industries, as thats an area of huge
growth. So were creating work.
The last eight years have been
difficult, but I know Im one of the
lucky ones. When I first arrived,
I was so shy so scared. Now Im
running my own company and
working with several charities. This
country is so rich in opportunities.
We should be doing all we can to
help others benefit from them, too.

No Way!

It Doesnt

Different
Beliefs Just
Dont Work

says Lynn Li,

40, from
London,
founder of
blog West
village
wanderer.com
It was about
a year into our
relationship
when I realised
my now-husband was never going
to agree with me politically. Im
a Liberal Democrat, and hes
Conservative. But while it used
to drive me insane, Ive recently
realised that its actually OK.
For me, voting Lib Dem is
obvious. Im a mother, so I want
to protect the NHS, the education
system and the environment for
my son. Im also concerned about
the growing negativity towards
immigration. Meanwhile, my
husband thinks the Conservatives
are the best bet to look after the
economy. As you can imagine, we
used to have really heated rows
about it. I wondered if I could love
someone who had opposing
opinions to me. How could such a
kind person not agree with taking
from the rich to help the poor? Was
he being a bigot or was I being naive?
Turns out, its neither. Over the
years Ive come to see that political
views are extremely complex, and
often stem from childhood. I come
from a first-generation immigrant
family, brought up in the Welsh
valleys during the coal miners
strike. As a result I saw first-hand the
Conservatives negative impact on
my home town. On the flip side,
my husband grew up in an affluent,
mainly white, middle-class area
where the Tories helped his familys
small business thrive. This doesnt
make him a bad person, just as
much as it does not make me a
victim. Id struggle far more if he
didnt vote at all. If you ask me, its
more important to be politically
aware than to agree all the time.

says Lauren
Smith, 28, a
researcher in
librarianship
and
citizenship
from Leeds
Ill be voting
Green in
the election.
I know they
wont win in my constituency, but
if it means I can make my voice
heard in even a tiny way, then thats
something. If more people voted
for what they actually believed
in, that would show the big
three parties that they just arent
responding to our needs. And my
boyfriend will be voting the same as
me if he didnt have similar beliefs,
I just dont think it would work.
The thing is, so much comes
back to politics. Even gossiping
about what someones wearing
or how you feel about your body
thats political. So Ive always filtered
out potential love interests in terms
of their world view. Sometimes you
can just tell that someone thinks
about things differently. If I got a
right-wing vibe from a first date
or someones Facebook profile,
Id have no interest in carrying on.
Sure, I could probably cope with
different flavours of pretty-darnlefty, but people whose politics are
based on cynicism about human
nature and inequality? Nah. Thats
really not for me. That said, Im not
sure Id have the guts to do what
a couple of friends of mine have
done when they found out the
men they were on dates with voted
differently they just stood up and
walked out! Brilliant.
I think it really just comes
down to the idea that personal is
political. I dont care how kind or
loving someone is to me, if they
cant extend that compassion to
people who arent connected to
them on an individual level, we
wont have a future.

The Fashion Campaign Changing Lives
These photos were taken to protest against the belief that some women are
partially responsible for being raped because of what they were wearing

woRdS: CaTRiona inneS

undreds of women
gather together in
a tunnel, deep in the
heart of east London.
Theyre all ages, shapes
and sizes, from all backgrounds
and all professions. But theyre
here today with one message:
Neither what I wear, nor what
I do, is ever an invitation for rape.
Unbelievably, its still a message
that needs to be put across. A recent
Amnesty International survey
showed that a quarter of people
believe women are at least partially
responsible for being raped if they
wear sexy or revealing clothing.
The same poll also found that one
in three people believed women
who behave flirtatiously are at least
partially responsible if they are raped.
Thats why #thisdoesntmeanyes
is so important. Headed by Rape
Crisis South London, and led
by four 26-year-old anti-rape
campaigners Nathalie Gordon,
Lydia Pang, Abigail Bergstrom
and Karlie McCulloch over 2,000
photographs were taken of women

wearing their favourite outfits. Snapped

by famed fashion photographer Perou,
the pictures have been shared online
from as far away as Azbekistan. And for
the women behind the campaign, its
really important that this continues.
About two months ago, we were

looking at another woman across the
room, who was quite provocatively
dressed, explains Nathalie. One of the
guys said: Oh, shes asking for it. One
friend we were with had been raped,
and was so upset by the conversation
that we had to take her outside. When
she was raped, she was wearing pyjamas.
And thats the point consent has
nothing to do with what youre wearing.
We spoke about how we wished there
was something we could do to change
the way people think about consent,

adds Nathalie. All four of us work in

creative environments, and there are
a lot of campaigns that dont empower
women theyre doing the opposite
and saying we need to cover up.
And since the photos went viral last
week (at last count theyve been seen
by over 17,000 people), it looks like
their plan is working. One rape victim
actually said that our campaign made
her feel better about getting dressed,
she says. It makes us feel emotional;
its really touching. We wanted people
to be aware of what they can do.
Its easy to help, adds Nathalie. Just
continue sharing our message. The
more people who see it and engage
with it, the more people will believe it.
Take a picture of yourself on Instagram,
post it with #thisdoesntmeanyes and
empower yourself. After this campaign
is over, we still want women to take that
message with them.

AreYou A
Shadow
Daughter?

The Rise
Of A New
Comparison
Crisis
Our mothers seem to have
achieved everything that
eludes us owning a home,
great careers and theyre
looking better than ever. Is it
any wonder more and more
of us feel inadequate?

hy cant I do as well as she did?

Why cant I be as beautiful?
Staring at her reflection in the
mirror, Billie Gianfrencesco
pokes at the spots on her face
and watches her eyes well up. Since childhood
shes been trying to live up to somebody elses
standards. But, unlike her peers, Billie hasnt
grown up feeling jealous of her best friend or
sister; shes comparing herself to someone
almost twice her age her own mother. And,
as an increasing number of young women
struggle to get on the property ladder or find
the job of their dreams, this unique form of
insecurity is becoming more and more common.
From birth, our mothers tend to be our main
role models, explains clinical psychologist Linda
Blair. Theyre our first examples of what it means
to be an adult woman, so it makes sense if you use
your mum as your primary point of comparison as
you grow up. But at some time we need to break
away from that and our current society is making
that really hard, she says.
Our parents generation grew up prerecession, meaning they could get on the

00

housing ladder, hold down jobs and

earn a good salary, explains Linda.
A lot of women these days are faced
with the prospect of moving back
home or renting for their whole lives.
Plus, with more beauty treatments
allowing us to look younger, the
anti-ageing gap between mother
and daughter is smaller than ever.
Its something Rumer Willis
recently spoke out about, having
grown up with the famously beautiful
Demi Moore for a mother. My mum
is one of the most stunning women
Ive ever met and [someone] who
everyone was comparing me to, she
said. [They were] saying that you look
more like your very masculine father

Billie with
her mum,
TV presenter
Trisha Goddard

From
the
age of
three,
I was
jealous
of my
mum,
Trisha,
the TV
star.
I never
felt
special

than your beautiful mum. For years

I thought: Maybe I can get plastic
surgery. If I change my face or get
really, really skinny, that will be it,
that will be the answer, and its not.
Billie, 25, knows exactly how
she feels: I remember feeling
jealous of my mum from as young
as three. Shes TV personality Trisha
Goddard, and she was presenting
a childrens show at the time. When
she collected me from nursery, all
the kids would go over and I just
didnt feel as special as her, she says.
It got worse as I got older,
continues Billie. I had really bad acne
around the same time my mum got
her own show. When people met
me, I always thought they wanted
me to be pretty or glamorous, and
I just wasnt. I was always trying to be
the person they expected me to be.
I did want to follow in mums
footsteps for a while, she adds.
But in the end, I didnt even try as
I thought Id fail and not be as good.
However, constantly pushing to
achieve the same as your mother
isnt always so bad. Mum always
inspired me to discover who I am,
adds Billie. I now work in the
management side of showbiz,
which Ive found Im really good
at. By breaking out of her shadow,
Ive discovered where my strengths
lie, and thats a brilliant feeling.

My Mum Is Super Successful

Abigail Kinsey, 24, from London, compares herself to mother Caroline, 51

ts hard to believe my mum

was married and owned
property at my age. Because,
in comparison, Im renting with
two friends and, although I am
seeing someone, marriage is way
off. Shes also the founder and
CEO of Cirkle, a PR company
that Ive watched grow into
a multi-award-winning agency. But
as happy as I am for her success, its
meant that Ive constantly been
striving to follow in her footsteps.
Its because of her that I studied
business there was no way I was
doing anything at university that
meant I wouldnt get a job
afterwards! However, theres

Lucy Troughton, 34, from
Leamington Spa, has always felt
in the shadow of mum Monica, 63

alking down the

street with my
mum when I was
growing up was
crazy. Horns beeped, men leant out
of cars, and people wolf-whistled.
And do you know what? She loved it!
She was an actress and a model, and
thrived on attention. I was less keen.
Im proud of how beautiful my
mum is, and Im lucky enough to
have inherited some of her features,
but growing up, her good looks left
me feeling pretty rubbish. Like when
wed go to a party and people would
flock around her shes like a magnet.
Or when past boyfriends would go on
about how gorgeous she is.
Like Rumer Willis, things were
much worse in my teenage years.
I went through a really awkward
phase and was really upset with my
appearance. I was comparing myself
to girls in my class, but also to my
mum I just couldnt understand
why I didnt look like her.
But I know there are more
important things in life now, and
I dont let my mums looks get me
down. Ive got a daughter of my own
and Id hate it if she grew up with the
same insecurities. My mum is
beautiful, but I have to appreciate
what I did inherit from her, rather
than resenting the things I didnt.

ROBYN
LAWLEY

I Dont Care About

Size Feeling Healthy
Is More Important
Shes at the peak of her career, but
it hasnt been an easy journey for
top model Robyn Lawley

38

Robyn
Lawley
Exclusive

heres no denying
that Robyn Lawley
is beyond flawless,
and at 6ft 2in and
a size 16, shes the
plus-size model
of the moment.
But her rise to
stardom hasnt been straightforward.
Robyn, 25, was signed to a mainstream
agency in Sydney at just 15 but after
struggling to maintain the size-6 figure
required for the catwalk, she took a year
off to reconsider her options. It was only
when Bella Model Management asked
her to join their plus-size agency that she
realised she could still achieve her dream.
Fast-forward ten years and Robyn is
one of the most sought-after models in
the world. But while in the early stages
of her career she was rejected by many
companies who refused to embrace
her healthy figure, she fought back. After
writing a series of articles about body
bullying, she found herself campaigning
for positive body image. Now just weeks
after giving birth, shes teamed up with
plus-size e-tailer Navabi to promote her
swimwear line. We sat down to chat with
the force of nature that is Robyn Lawley.
Hi Robyn, tell us how you got into
the modelling industry?
I [began] in my early teens when I was
still at school. I actually had dreams of
being a chef, so it hadnt crossed my
mind as being a career path until then.
Looking back, do you ever think
you were a bit too young?
Yes, I think 15 is too young to start
modelling. Its a very adult world. Some
girls have these amazing parents who will
protect them, but a huge amount of girls
dont. Many young models have to
support entire families in other countries
and, sadly, I think certain people use
that knowledge to their advantage.
The industry isnt regulated enough.
You were one of the first women
to really address body-shaming
and speak out about it. Do you feel
a responsibility to do that?
I know many women before me whove
spoken out as well, so Im not the first,
but I do feel responsible for speaking
out, especially against body bullying.
I remember what I went through as a
teen. Personally, I dont care about size;
I care about health. If you feel healthy,
thats more important than anything.
How do you feel about the plus-size
industry as a whole?
I always feel like people are surprised

Where do you like to shop for clothes?
London! I love Camden market
and Topshop. But Williamsburg in
Brooklyn has awesome vintage stores.
Youre also a bit of a foodie, and we love
your blog. How important is it for you
to share your healthy eating message?
Well, I have a cookbook coming out in
America soon I cant wait. Its called
Robyn Lawley Eats: Decadent Dishes
For Friends And Family. I did the food
photography while I was living in New
York, before I moved back to Australia.
You project such a positive attitude
towards your body what makes
you feel great?
For me, I feel better about myself when
I get outside. Also, I dont eat anything
processed. Not only is it pretty much
pure garbage, its also doing nothing

Every
catwalk
and
editorial

for the environment or our bodies.

What advice would you give to women
who suffer from low self-esteem?
Try not to compare your body to that of
celebrities or models, because what you
see is not always real especially with
Photoshop ruling the planet. Work with
your body type and just enjoy the fact
you can see, hear and walk. My mother
and older sister work with disabled
people and it makes you realise that
spending so much time pinpointing
your flaws is hiding who you really are.
Youre a DJ, a cook, a plus-sized model
and a mum. Do you have any time to
do anything else?
Time is a precious commodity for me and
I have fun doing all those things I cant
remember the last time I was bored!

robyn lawley, bond-eye.com.au, navabi

when they work with one of us [plussize models] and find that we can, in
fact, model very well. Just because were
not a size zero doesnt mean we cant
do it effectively. It flabbergasts me.
I think every catwalk and editorial
spread should feature all different
types of bodies and faces.
What do you love about modelling?
I love the confidence it gives me.
I was lucky [that my agent] gave me
a contract on the spot, and about
a year later my confidence was the
strongest it had ever been, I felt
unstoppable and still do.
You do look incredible, how do
you stay in shape?
[Before I was pregnant] I had a pretty
awesome personal trainer called Jose
Mota. We mainly did kickboxing and
I tried to hit the gym about four times
a week. If youre a person who lacks
motivation, invest in a trainer its well
worth it. Even just to learn the safe way
of working out at a gym and what types
of exercises are good for your body type.
Well, you definitely look beach ready
to us. Tell us about your amazing new
swimwear range
It was born out of frustration really. I was
trying to find swimsuits that fitted me,
yet were still fashion-forward they
were almost non-existent a few years
ago. When I look back, I just think how
ridiculous it was that brands werent
offering swimwear in my size.
What are the main considerations when
creating a line that celebrates curves?
The suits need to look good and they
need to be made from a higher quality
fabric. A lot of my friends who have big
busts have had to wear bras or shapewear
under their swimsuits, so thats one of
the first things I felt I needed to address.
Why should a swimsuit feel different to

Balm in Pink Lilly
HHH
Looks Sam: Baby pink and
slightly shimmery, this had
a moisturising formula that
definitely helped my chapped

HHHH
Looks Sam: Bright and superpigmented, this had a more

My lips instantly felt smoother

lips feeling really soft and
conditioned. The coral colour

is packed with amino acids,
vitamin B, magnesium and

Judit Galambosi, lead

why its a must-have. Prickly
pears act as a hydration

vitamins and minerals to
