Customize a Pivot Table and Stacked Bar Chart

In this exercise, I am going to work with a pivot table and a stacked bar chart. I turn the Design Grid on
and minimize both the Bar and Combo Charts.
I right-click on the straight table and copy it by selecting Clone. I minimize one of the two tables. I open
the Properties dialogue box for the other.
On the General tab, I select the icon for a Pivot Table and update the Window Title to match.
On the Dimensions tab, I add Year and Date to the list of Used Dimensions. I use the Promote and
Demote buttons to organize the fields in order: Year, Month, Date.
On the Presentation tab, I ensure that Show Partial Sums is checked for all dimensions. I click OK to
finish.
Now, I pivot the data by expanding the dimensions and dragging the columns to different locations.
After exploring different layouts, I decide to keep the Year and Total in the first column, followed by In,
Out, and Net.
Tables can be difficult to search, especially when there are lots of rows. To make searching easier, we can
add dropdown selections to any of the dimension column headers.
To add the dropdown selections, I right-click to open the Properties dialogue box.
I choose the Presentation tab. Under Dimensions and Expressions, I select Month and then check
Dropdown Select. I click OK to finish and save my work.
Now, I can use the dropdown selection box to choose transactions by month, such as January.
Now, I will create a stacked bar chart. I clone the pivot table and minimize one.
I open Chart Properties for the other and, on the General Tab, select the icon for a Bar Chart. I change
the Window Title to Stacked Bar Chart.
On the Dimension tab, I remove Date from the list of Used Dimensions.
On the Expressions tab, I disable all of the expressions except Net. To disable an expression, I
deselected the box next to Enable.
Finally, on the Style Tab, under Subtype, I change my selection from Grouped to Stacked.
When I click OK, I see the stacked bar chart.
Now, I will enhance the stacked bar chart further.
One option I can enable is the Fast Type Change. I open the properties box again and revisit the General
tab. Under the Fast Type Change option, I select Bar Chart and Straight Table. When I return to the

layout, I see an additional option in upper right-hand corner of the stacked bar chart. This new icon allows
me to switch between the two options I selected on the Properties tab: a bar chart and a straight table.
The Fast Type Change option provides users with additional views of the data in a limited amount of
space.
Ill explore two additional features Dimension Limiting and Scrolling -- using the bar chart I created
earlier. I expand the bar chart and open the Properties dialogue box.
On the Dimensions tab, I remove month and replace it with the dimension date.
On the Dimension Limits tab, I check Restrict which values are displayed using the first expression.
From the Limits option, I select Show only > Largest 10 Values, and I uncheck the Show Others option.
On the Presentation tab, under Chart Scrolling, I check Enable X-Axis Scrollbar When Number of Items
Exceeds 5, and then I click OK to finish.
Spend some time modifying a pivot table, a stacked bar chart, and the grouped bar chart you created
previously.
