Parklet Overview
The term parklet broadly refers to parking spaces that have been converted to miniature parks or
open-spaces. Though they can vary, parklets are generally temporary installations, created out of
low-cost materials that can be easily moved. They are often installed for events; such as PARKing
Day events, complete streets festivals, or demonstration projects, but can be installed seasonally or
permanently as well. They tend to feature amenities to be used by the general public, such as caf
spaces, benches, bicycle parking, group activities, or educational activities. They can be sponsored by
local businesses and organizations or be installed by local municipalities. The images below show
examples of the possibilities that parklets present for a community.

Franciscos Mission District,
this parklet teaches passerbys
the importance of rain water
and the natural filtering
processes that water goes
through. It does so with
uniquely interactive exhibits
and informational kiosks. It
also provides benches and
shade as an amenity to the
public. It was developed by
the San Francisco chapter of
the Boys & Girls Club.

Collar City PreRamble: Lucas
Confectionery
This parklet was installed for a 2 days as a
part of the Collar City PreRamble in 2015, an
annual complete streets festival held in
downtown Troy, NY. The parklet was put
together by a local wine tasting establishment
and used materials that were easily found
within the shop. The installation of the
parklet took less than an hour. During
operating hours of the wine bar, the parklet
was also filled with tables and chairs. The
parklet essentially cost the wine bar nothing,
yet brought in plenty of customers.
