ASSIGNMENT 2B200840806

Kozma identifies several ways in which ICT can and should

impact education. In the content of his article, critically
evaluate the Gauteng on line and Khanya project in South
Africa.

INTRODUCTION.

South Africa is primarily focus on development basic literacy skill

with limited integration into overall curricula activities.

The Department of Education has driven ICTs intervention in

Schools nationally. ICTs integration in education is gaining
momentum worldwide.

So the South African Schools are recovering from the old system
of apartheid to the new regime of using Technology.

Teachers are being provided with tools to use in all spheres of

their profession. So when I compare Western Cape Province with
other provinces, it is taking the lead by implementing the project
known as (Khanya Project) ICTs in schools.

So it is spreading rapidly with the hope of alleviating the

educational Crisis in this country.
KHANYA “s REVIEW (. PRONS &CONS.)

Student outcomes such as increased knowledge of the school

subject, improve attitude about learning

Impact on classroom shows that the innovative of classes use of

computers depends not just on the availability of computers, but
also on other factors such as administrative support, teacher
training.

ICTs supported change in classroom in developing countries such

as lack of time in curriculum and school day. Introduction of
technology promotes change in school and transformed school.

ICTs can be used to launch innovation in schools and provide

community people with new educational services.

IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICY

Program monitoring and evaluation can provide policymakers and

program directors with important data.
KHANYA PROJECT

As I have started in my introduction that Khanya Project takes the

lead about implementing the ICTs in the Western Cape and is
succeeding. It is an initiative of the Western Cape Department of
Education which starts in APRIL 2005.So its aim is that every
teacher in the Western Cape will eventually use technology such
as computer and television to teach .The teachers and learners
are benefiting a lot from using the ICTs in their schools. The
project is focusing on well managed Schools in poor areas with
sound academic results, where new technology will make the
different to the lives of educators and learners. Its goal is that all
school will equipped with computer lab. Gives teachers more time
for actual learning in that class by saving time those learners
normally spend on writing notes.

INTERNAL BELIEF AND MOTIVATION OF EDUCATORS.

Teachers may feel fear from using technology, because they are
being threated that learners may know or their ignorance will
discovered. The positive impact is not restricted to learning but
also to learner’s response. The principal are querying that they
felt that teachers were not competent enough or not computer
literate. In fact it was discovering that most teachers have
discussed how they felt ill equipped unskilled. All in all I can say
teachers feel that training has empowered them to use
technology , by making their jobs much easier .Those who
disagreed felt that training needs to be ongoing as technology
changes and to equip teachers to cope with changing syllabi .The
lack of resources is the other thing that is affecting teachers in
Western Cape. Both Principals and teachers are concern about
the lack of the resources, and must have access to more
educational software for different subject .With that shortage of
resources they felt that learners could not experience the true
benefit of ICTs, because they will fight over computers because of
the high rate of their numbers i.e. learner ratio. What I have
realized when I was making the research about evaluation the
ICTs, in general these projects are failing somewhere. Lack of
financial is the one factor that contributes to resource problems.

TIME CONSTRAIN FOR THE PERIODS.

Teachers believe that they are under pressure because of moving

computers around school or moving the class to where equipment
are placed, prohibited them to use ICTs. Slow Internet connection
could have an impact.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF GAUTENG ONLINE
IN SOUTH AFRICAN SCHHOOLS.

It is one of the projects that Department of Education introduces

to try to minimize the work load that the teachers are facing due
to technology changes. So it is a project in South Africa which has
challenges in terms of educator “s competence in using
computers in teaching and learning. Most teachers are not
competent to use software into their learning content of a
learning area. So these may be the reason that schools do not
appear to be exploiting the opportunities offered by I information
Communication Technologies. No soft ware in place. Teachers
complains that they don’t have equipment to go and teach .They
are headed by the people who themselves are not equipped. No
access to internet always is offline (is locked).

CONCLUSION.

Kozma”s views, Khanya Project, and Gauteng Online to my

assessment are similar but there are some issues need to be
ironed out in order to be successfully functioning in schools. The
skills need to be developed from a combination of comprehensive
training and experience.
