Highlights of Our
Week from
Mrs. Smith’s Class
Sept. 12-16
Language Arts
Math
Reading groups have started! The students
meet in a small group with a teacher 4 days
a week. Expect to read with them and sign a
Baggie Book blue paper Monday -Thursday.
Can
Today was our first Gummy Worm Friday!
Students that only miss one night of reading
in the past two weeks earn gummy worms.

work on identifying coins and counting
them? We tried counting some coins
this week, beginning with quarters.
That was tough stuff for 2 nd grade!

I taught them a new game to practice
We did some more metacognition lessons.
This week we used a nonfiction book,
Animals Asleep and a historical fiction, The
Babe and I. The students are practicing
using thinking stems: I’m thinking…, I’m
noticing…, I’m wondering…, I’m seeing…,
I’m feeling… to do “real reading!”
basic facts and determining even/odd.
It’s called Sink or Swim.
We are also working daily on telling time
to the hour and half-hour. We will work
up to more difficult times.
As writers, we are continuing to work on
small moment stories.
Enjoy your student’s Home Letter, and then
please write back to him/her.
Remember when riding the car or going
for a walk, those are great opportunities
to practice counting by 5s and 10s.
