Preparation
Prerequisites: What do students need to know prior to this lesson?

Basic understanding of reading a tape measure

Context: Where does this lesson come in the unit?

Out of a 5 day unit, this lesson falls on the 4th day.

Vocabulary: What concepts will be learned or reinforced in this lesson? How will you make the concepts
development part of the lesson?

Basic understanding of how to read a measuring tape, add and subtract fractions and be able to
read and use a tape measure for various functions in a shop setting.
Materials: What resources are needed to make this lesson successful? What will you need to prepare in
advance?

The teacher will give all students a tape measure. There will be a series of wood objects, usually
between 20 and 25, numbered and laid out in the shop.

Objectives or Learner Outcomes

How will the learning be measured and assessed?

General Goal(s):

Through observation, practice, and collaboration the learner will correctly demonstrate an understanding
of how to measure lumber.

Specific Performance-Based Objectives:

The learner will begin to learn and understanding the process of measurement
systems.
The learner will correctly explain how to read a measuring tape.
The learner will add and subtract fractions with 90% accuracy.

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In)

An "attention getter" to focus students learning? A discussion or activity to activate students prior
knowledge?

The teacher will give all students a tape measure. There will be a series of objects, usually
between 20 and 25, numbered and laid out in the shop.
Teacher will then continue class with a discussion / review of the material learned from the day
prior. The teacher will cold call on students.

Step-By-Step Procedures
(one 55 minute class period)
Instruction: List procedures for what will happen first, second, and so on to teach what you expect the
students to learn. EL strategies should include some consideration of language development.

Today we are going to Continue to show your Basic understanding of

reading a tape measure. Yesterday, we learned about. (reading a ruler,
learned 16ths, 8ths, s, and s)
By the end of todays lesson, you will be able toCorrectly demonstrate
an understanding of how to measure lumber.
In order to better understand this, I want you to think back to something we
talked about yesterdayAbout how the paper inch is connected to paper inch
and the rectangle we drew on the board is related to 1 inch sections on the
ruler or tape measure.
Handout tape measures & students pull out a piece of paper and a pencil
The teacher will give all students direction and procedures for moving through
the shop. There will be a series of objects, between 20 and 25, numbered and
laid out in the shop.
Teacher will call students back to tables for clean-up and closure.

Guided Practice (2-3 sentences): What activities will the students engage in to practice the learning?

Include some time when the students are working with partners or in small groups. Be sure to include how
you will check for understanding throughout each stage of your lesson. Write out high level and/or openended questions to ask throughout your lesson.

The students take a piece of paper and a pen or pencil with them and measure each
object writing down their finding. They have to record the length and width for all
objects. Students may collaborate with others.
At the end of the period, the students will turn in their paper of written measurements
for an exit slip from class.
Circulate through the shop to check for understanding

Lesson Extension (advanced students): What activities or alternatives will you provide for those who
finish early and want to explore the topic more?
Students who would finish their tasks early would be allowed to get on the Internet and continue to work
on an alternative Career Portfolio project.

Adaptations (For Students With Learning Disabilities):

Simplified language will be used, and directions will be clear and repeated.

Vocabulary printouts will be distributed.

Extra time would be given during Q/A session.

Alternate homework if needed

Check frequently for understanding

ELs will be grouped with students who speak their language if possible.

Independent Practice
What will you do to have students practice the learning independently?

The students take a piece of paper and a pen or pencil with them and measure each object
writing down their finding. They have to record the length and width for all objects. Students
may collaborate with others.
At the end of the period, the students will turn in their paper of written measurements for an exit
slip from class.

Closure
Reflect on Anticipatory Set

After all the students are finished with the rotation I will call students back to the workbenches
for clean-up and closure. Check for understanding as students put tape measures and objects
back. This activity is great because the kids get their hands on tangible pieces to support their
understanding of measurement.
