INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY SOCIOLOGY 101

ORAL PRESENTATION & PAPER GUIDELINES


If you choose to do presentation, then your paper and presentation will be your participation score. Any
additional homework and assignment you do will get bonus points.
I. TOPICS TO CHOOSE FROM AND THE RELEVANT CHAPTERS IN TEXTBOOK:
1. East-West, Asian-European cultures in comparative perspectives (Culture, Religion, Health &
Medicine)
2. Green consumption & ethical consumption as a social movement (Collective Behavior,
Environment)
3. Mixed marriages and social acceptance (Family, Gender stratification, Global inequality)
4. Euthanasia/Assisted suicide/Mercy killing (Deviance, Age stratification)
5. Emotional work and gendered occupations (Stratification, Gender, Socialization)
If you have another topic that you are very much interested in, please consult with the instructor.
II. GENERAL GUIDELINES:
1. You can do the paper and presentation individually or in group.
2. Choose only one topic from the list above.
3. Read the relevant chapters in the textbook to make sure you apply appropriate sociological
theories in your paper.
4. Collect information and/or data to write your paper.
5. Write an essay of 2000-5000 words, excluding references.
Rules about team work:

Group size: maximum 8 members.


If your group is large, make sure to divide the work equally and fairly.
Avoid free-riding (someone who does nothing but enjoys the groups result) and/or overburden
(someone who does everything for the whole group).
Every group has the right to include new member(s) and exclude non-participating member(s)
based on that members commitment and attitude. The group should inform the member and
me about such decision.

III. GRADE COMPONENTS FOR ORAL PRESENTATION (60 points) this will be converted to
the 40% respective ratio of the total course grade.
1. You will present your paper to the class for discussion.
2. Group members can arrange among themselves about how many people will do the presentation,
and who those people are.
3. Length of presentation: minimum 15 minutes, maximum 30 minutes. Q&A session: 10-30
minutes.
4. Grading components:
Quality of slideshow: 20 points
Good verbal presentation: 15 points
Cohesion of ideas and arguments: 10 points
Good Q&A session: 15 points
5. Students who ask good questions or provide excellent comments will get bonus points.

Depending on the quality of the question/comment, you will get from 2 to 5 points for each
question you pose to the presenter(s). Excellent response and/or sharing from the audience will
also get bonus points.
IV. GRADE COMPONENTS FOR FINAL PAPER (40 points) this will be converted to the 40%
respective ratio of the total course grade.
Grading components:

Applying appropriate theories:15 points


Good data, statistics, and/or illustrations: 10 points
Incorporation of feedback & comments from presentation: 10 points
Good overall format, including list of appendices/references/bibliography: 05
points

V. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Based on the questions and comments you received during the oral presentation, modify and
correct all errors and mistakes in your slides and paper.

On the last day of class, send in both hard copy (printed sheets) and soft copy (PowerPoint and
MS Word files) of your paper and presentation to me.
Hard copy: printed, stapled, with pages numbered
Soft copy: email to me at nghi.nbt@ou.edu.vn
