sound. A short vowel sound is made when there is only one vowel in the word or
syllable. We will also focus on the consonant sound /ck/ at the end of a word. /ck/
comes at the end of a word with a short vowel sound (typically these words are one
syllable). We will also focus on the short /e/ sound created by the two vowels (ea)
such as in the word bread or meadow.

Vowels:
i

At home, you can help your child practice making words that contain the following
word families. The beginning sound could be a single consonant or a consonant blend
(examples: cr, bl, spr) See pattern words for example words to study.
Word Families: -ack, -eck, -ick, -ock, -uck
Please have your student study the 10 assigned pattern words listed below in addition
to the 4 high frequency words introduced in class. On the final test, the students will
be tested on the 14 words listed below along with 10 additional words that contain
this weeks spelling patterns. Students are not expected to study these 10 additional
