Course Syllabus
Last Update: Monday, July 25, 2016
Course Overview:
This course intends to teach multiple methods for solving ordinary differential equations
and systems of them in addition to present the basic ideas of constructing such equations.
More specifically, the following topics will be covered during the semester:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)

First-Order Differential Equations

Mathematical Models and Numerical Methods
Linear Equations of Higher Order
Systems of Differential Equations

available for the spring 2017 semester).
Grading Policy:
No late homework or late tests will be accepted for any reasons. No
makeup for the tests unless there is a major emergency.
The red parts of the following will be confirmed during our first lecture.
1) Eight Homework Sets (30%): Each set may have 5-7 problems and each problem may
take 0.5-1.0 hours to solve. You have at least two weeks of working time on each set. All
homework will be collected by email. All HW will be collected on Thursdays.
No homework assignment during the first week.
2) Three short tests: During regular class time in our classroom; One per month
(September, October, November with reasonable spacing) and all tests on Thursdays;
Doing any two of three problems and the best two will be credited if all are attempted;
Exact dates confirmed; Students must bring SBU ID to all tests.
Test 1 (16%):
09/22/2016 Thursday
Test 2 (16%):
10/20/2016 Thursday
Test 3 (16%):
11/17/2016 Thursday
3) Final (22%): Date and room to be confirmed. You solve any three of four problems.
E-Homework Submission Guideline must be followed closely to avoid
grading delays or deduction of points.
1) E-homework (e-HW) address: sbu.ams361.s16@gmail.com
2) Each e-HW must be packed in one (and only one!) PDF and the
email Subject must be "Lastmame-SBID-HomeworkX". For example, J.
Smith with SBID=10012345 submitting Homwork3 must use Subject
"Smith-10012345-Homework3".
3) The PDF must be named the same as your email subject line:
Lastmame-SBID-HomeworkX
4) E-HW must follow all conventional rules as paper HW, e.g., late
e-HW will be deleted automatically. No late HW will be accepted
for any reasons.
5) Each HW set is allowed ONE submission. Multiple submissions will
cause major chaos and TA may give a ZERO for that set.
6) 8. The graders may deduct points for failing to follow the above
7) rules at his/her discretion.
