To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to recommend Dr. Keith Cagle for tenure at Gallaudet University.
I first met Dr. Cagle when I was a graduate student in the Department of Interpretation. Dr. Cagles
passion for his students and enthusiasm for linguistics were obvious even before I had one-on-one
interactions with him.
When I was a student in his Structure of American Sign Language (INT 707) class, he met with me to
discuss an upcoming project. He listened to my questions and was eager to supply me with any
resources I neededhe went so far as to loan me several books from his personal library. I left that
meeting knowing that Dr. Cagle wanted me to succeed; his genuine excitement regarding my
learning opportunities was impossible to ignore.
Later in the M.A.I. program, I sought out Dr. Cagle when beginning to read for my thesis literature
review. I knew that he could provide perspectives and explanations that would solidify my
understanding of ASL lexicon. He took the time to respond to each of my questions in detail. His
responses even included recommendations of specific texts, offers to send PowerPoints from his
various classes, and a copy of his dissertation. He went above and beyond my initial expectations
when I reached out for advice.
I will close this recommendation with the additional comment that Dr. Cagle represents a rare
combination of academic talent, enthusiasm, and personality. The Department of Interpretation and
Gallaudet University would benefit greatly from his tenure.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with further questions.
Sincerely,

Sarah Lutvak
