Ice Cream Data

Introduction:
With many different flavors of ice cream, there will always be a variety of favorites. The most popular two
competing ice cream flavors are chocolate and vanilla. For this data, seventy-five people were asked the questions:

Chocolate or vanilla ice cream?

How often eaten per month over the summer?

Data:
In this pie chart, one can see that chocolate is just barely preferred over vanilla.

This table shows the exact number of votes for the two flavors as well as the choice of neither flavor. The table
concludes that chocolate only received four more votes than vanilla while seven people responded with neither.

The table above shows that, overall, the average ice cream consumption per month is 7.96 or about 8. The median

response was 5. The minimum time ice cream was eaten for an individual was 0 while the maximum was 50.

Bias could factor into the data in a number of ways. For example, people may like one brand of chocolate ice
cream but not another brand. One may prefer a certain flavor but only if it is made a specific way. These are a couple

examples of how bias could potentially cloud the results of the ice cream preferences received.

Process:
The process of collecting the data necessary for these statistics consisted of asking seventy-five people if they
preferred chocolate, vanilla, or neither ice cream. The process for this experiment was pretty easy despite a few people
whose information was greatly exaggerated to the point of not being usable and people who were too indecisive and
therefore could not pick one flavor over the other. Because these cases were rare, the whole process was fairly easy.

Improvements:
If collecting the data again, making the requirements clearer to avoid people asking questions about what to do
would be a necessary improvement. Another improvement would be using a wider variety of ages than just people in high
school. This would probably provide a more accurate poll as well.

Conclusion:
In all, more people preferred chocolate over vanilla. Although it was only by a small margin,
chocolate is still the dominant flavor. Ice cream was also said to be eaten approximately 8 times a
month on average.
