Locating an emergency BARRYTON — In an emergency situation, every second is critical. When first responders can not find a location, however, those seconds can quickly become a matter of life or death. Local officials and business leaders addressed this issue at a 9-1-1 meeting with Meceola Consolidated Central Dispatch Authority Director Laurie Smalla on Wednesday in Barryton. Smalla spoke about the importance of properly displaying addresses on businesses and homes. She said when 9-1-1 dispatchers send police, EMS or fire responders to a situation, the protocol is to only give an address. “You only need to see an ambulance drive past you to realize how important it is (to post an address),” Smalla said. “Everything we do is based on an address.” The meeting was prompted after an incident at Hanson’s BP Party Store three weeks ago. A young man came into the store to get a donut for his grandmother, saying that she was a diabetic and needed to raise blood sugar. Store owner Greg Hanson noticed that the older woman was slumped over in the seat of the car. He immediately dialed 9-1-1 and ran to give her orange juice in an attempt to raise her blood sugar levels. “She was almost unresponsive by the time I got to her,” Hanson said. “It’s an alarming thing to have happen.” The 9-1-1 operator was diligent in instructing Hanson on what to do while he waited for first responders. However, when he heard the sirens coming, he saw that they passed by his store a few times before finally pulling into the gas station. First responders and EMS were able to revive the woman. Before the EMS left, Hanson was nailing his address numbers to his building. “It’s a little bit of a wake-up call,” he said. “I think at the very least it should be a business effort to put the (address) numbers up.” During Wednesday’s meeting, Smalla recommended putting the numbers next to the door, facing the roadway in a clearly visible spot that is free of any obstructions such as shrubs, bushes or trees. She said

the best signs are reflective, fluorescent green signs with white lettering. These signs can be purchased at a wide variety of local businesses. “The most important thing is to make sure your addresses are posted,” Smalla said. “We take calls everyday where people say, ‘They know where we’re at.’” Barryton business owners agreed that, in town, most businesses do not have addresses posted. “We take it for granted that everyone knows where (our businesses are at),” said Penny Huffman, owner of Penny Wash Laundromat. However, Hanson thinks that in addition to giving an address, first responders should be given the name of a location, particularly if a situation happens at a business. “In a town like (Barryton), everyone is going to know exactly where we are,” he said. New Law Makes It Easier to Save on Prescription Costs (NewsUSA) - Making ends meet shouldn’t mean going without your medications. If you have limited income and resources, Medicare’s “Extra Help” program sets it up so you can pay no more than $2.50 for each generic drug and $6.30 for each brand-name drug. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimates that “Extra Help” can save participating seniors as much as $3,900 per year. Now it’s even easier to qualify for “Extra Help” from Medicare. A new law changed how your income and assets are counted in 2010: * Life insurance policies don’t count as resources. * Help you get from relatives, friends and others to pay for property expenses -- like food, mortgage, rent, heating fuel or gas, electricity, water and property taxes -- does not count as income. Many People Qualify and Don’t Even Know It These changes mean that more people than ever will now qualify for “Extra Help.” Even if you were turned down for “Extra Help” before, you should reapply. If you qualify, you’ll get help paying for Medicare prescription drug coverage premiums, copayments and deductibles. To qualify, you

must make less than $16,245 a year (or $21,855 for married couples). Even if your income is higher, you may still be able to get some extra help. Your resources must also be limited to $12,510 (or $25,010 for married couples). Resources include bank accounts, stocks and bonds, but not your house or car. There Is No Cost or Obligation to Apply It’s easy and free to apply for “Extra Help.” You or a family member, trusted counselor or caregiver can apply online at www.socialsecurity.gov/ prescriptionhelp or call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users should call 1-800325-0778) and ask for the “Application for Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs.” All the information you give is confidential. To learn more about Medicare prescription drug coverage, visit www.medicare.gov, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227). TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048. Tips for Stress-Free Air Travel (NewsUSA) - Man-made and natural disruptions to air travel are all-too-often the norm. Not only can weather delay take-offs and landings, but new airline rules can also keep planes grounded. For example, if a plane is sitting on the tarmac for more than three hours, it has to return to the gate. On the upside, there are ways to cope with the unexpected. Here are a few simple tips to prepare for delays before leaving home: * Print copies of itineraries with the 800 numbers for your airline, and others that fly the same route, just in case you have to rebook from the airport. The paper-free option? E-mail those numbers or enter them manually into your smartphone. * Check airline Web sites for delay postings. New rules mandate that airlines have this information online. Alternatively, you can go to www.flightstats.com. * Make sure you can access your office and home computers in the event you are stuck while traveling. Free and inexpensive programs like LogMeIn (www. LogMeIn.com) make it quick, easy and secure to access files,

calendars and applications from any computer, smartphone, netbook or iPad with an Internet connection. * Enlist a friend or family member who knows their way around online travel sites, and keep them on your mobile phone speed dial. If you have to make alternative plans, they can probably do it faster than anyone. * Remember travel insurance. A few extra dollars tacked onto the price of your trip can provide peace of mind if you have to change plans for unforeseen reasons. Check what your airline, travel agent, booking site and credit cards offer to make sure that you’re covered. * Have fun. Many airports are adding luxuries like spas, high-end restaurants and even showers to keep passengers happy. Find out what your airport, and the ones that you will visit, offer before you go, so you’re able to enjoy them to the fullest. While there is no surefire guarantee for disruption-free air travel, a little advanced planning can go a long way -- even all the way to your destination. Tips to Keep Your Computer Running Smoothly (NewsUSA) - Buying a new computer’s always a thrill -- but sooner or later, your fast new machine will start to act like a clunker. Or will it? With a few simple tips, you can keep your computer running smoothly. Sammsoft (www.sammsoft. com), a company that develops and publishes quality software products designed to secure, protect, maintain and enhance computer users’ experience, provides the following tips: 1. Clean out your computer registry. Every Windows Operating System uses a registry, or a central database that contains all of the settings for low-level operating system components, as well as any applications running on the platform. Every time you save something, run a new application or install or uninstall a program, new information is organized into your registry. But occasionally, the registry records something incorrectly. Over time, registry errors pile up and can start slowing down your computer.

But running a registry cleaner, such as Advanced Registry Optimizer 2010 by Sammsoft, will fix registry errors and remove faulty files, helping your computer run quickly and smoothly. 2. Keep viruses under wraps. Run a virus checker regularly. If you have a high-speed wireless connection, don’t use the Internet without a firewall. No antivirus strategy is perfect, so stay away from suspicious-looking Web sites and don’t click on strange links in e-mails. 3. Get rid of unnecessary files. If you haven’t used a program in months or years, delete it to reclaim valuable memory. But always back-up applications in case you want to reinstall them later, and don’t delete applications that you don’t recognize, as Windows might need them to run. Never remove WINDOWS or HOT FIX applications. Also delete cookies and clear your Internet cache before you signoff your computer. 4. Never turn off your computer before Windows has shut down. Doing so so could harm the

hard drive or result in lost data or Windows files. 5. Back up Your Computer. Hardware problems occur more that you might think, and you don’t want to deal with the frustration of losing valuable data. Back up photos, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents -- anything that you do not want to lose -on external hard drives or CDs. Prepare for Healthy Fun in the Sun (NewsUSA) - Cold weather is in the rear-view mirror, and families across the country are gearing up to get active outdoors. With the threat of cabin fever waning, now is the time to get familiar with a few helpful tips to ensure a safe and stress-free season for the entire family: * Avoid insect and tick bites. Bug bites can be dangerous, so take precautions, such as wearing insect repellent, tucking pants into socks or shoes when hiking in the woods and staying in the middle of trails to avoid overhanging branches. Avoid scented soaps and lotions that

can attract bugs. * Always wear sunblock. Limit exposure to the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when sun rays are at their strongest. Use sunblock that offers UVA and UVB protection with an SPF of 15 or higher. Apply sunblock 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapply it every two hours or after swimming, sweating or toweldrying. * Avoid heat stress and heat stroke. It’s easy to get caught up in the fun of outdoor activities, but in extreme heat conditions it’s important to not push beyond your physical limits. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and be on alert for symptoms of heat stress and heat stroke, such as thirst, cramps, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and fever. * Get your physical. If children are planning on participating in camp or sports over the summer, it’s important that they have a physical exam to ensure they’re physically ready to be active. Take Care Clinics, professional walk-in health care clinics located at

select Walgreens across the country, are now offering sport and camp physicals for just $35 through September 2010. A sports or camp physical is a perfect opportunity to interact with a trusted health care professional. Take Care Clinics are a convenient option for parents with busy schedules, as these clinics are open seven days a week and on weeknights, and don’t require appointments. * Use your best judgment and take the appropriate precautions. If an accident does occur, seek treatment from a health care professional. Take Care Clinics can be a great resource for high-quality, affordable and convenient care for everyday illnesses, minor injuries like splinters, sprains and strains, and treatment for an expanding range of skin conditions including sunburn, tick and other insect bites, poison ivy, wart removal and more.
