Message from the President / Mensaje de la Presidenta

On behalf of the Fraternity Hispanic Association
Im excited to once again invite you all to the 6th
annual Hispanic Heritage Week celebrations in
Hamilton Ontario. It is with great pleasure and optimism that I look forward to the upcoming festivities planned for this years celebrations were we
will showcase our culture, customs and contributions to Canadian society. This years celebrations
holds a significant and special note to consider as it
marks the countdown to Canadas 150th anniversary, this allows us the opportunity to join in the spirit of community celebrations across the country.
In this magazine you will find information on the
various activities to be held during the week, as
well as articles of interest to our community. We
will have a full week of activities for the whole family to take part in or simply enjoy and savour the
flavours and sounds of Hispanic culture.
We express our sincere gratitude to the authorities
who have always supported the AFH, this project
and many other programs. A special consideration
and heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, artists,
volunteers and vendors who have worked tirelessly to achieve the realization of this Hispanic Heritage Week celebrations and the entire community
for their support and participation. The Hispanic
Heritage Week would not be possible without you.

En nombre de la Asociacin Fraternidad Hispana

tengo el placer de invitarles a nuestra Sexta Semana
Hispanoamericana que se realizar del 8 al15 de
octubre 2016 en Hamilton. Con un gran optimismo
y regocijo nos preparamos a realizar los eventos que
formarn parte de esta gran semana, donde como
siempre compartiremos nuestra cultura, costumbres
y el aporte de los hispanos a la sociedad Canadiense.
Las celebraciones de este ao tienen tambin un
significado muy especial pues se dan en el contexto
del inicio del conteo regresivo para el 150 aniversario
de Canad que tendr lugar en el 2017 y del cual
formaremos parte con un espritu comunitario.
En esta revista encontrarn informacin sobre
las diferentes actividades y programacin que
celebraremos durante la Semana Hispana, as como
tambin varios artculos de inters para nuestra
comunidad.
La semana estar llena de actividades para toda la
familia donde podremos deleitarnos con la riqueza
de nuestra cultura, sus sabores, colores y ritmos.

expresar
nuestros
sinceros
agradecimientos a las autoridades que han apoyado
este proyecto, as como a nuestros patrocinadores,
artistas y voluntarios que han trabajado sin descanso
en la preparacin y realizacin de la Semana

To our many friends and supporters in the Hispanic community,
On behalf of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, I am pleased to offer
greetings along with my very best wishes on the occasion of our 6th Annual Hispanic
Heritage Week celebrations in the city of Hamilton.
This week is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the Hispanic heritage through arts
exhibits, food, health workshops, music and dance. More than a celebration of culture, this
week also recognizes and honours the many and significant contributions that Hispanic
people make to our community, country and world. Through the generous support of local
businesses and individuals, the academic achievement and dedication of many of our local
Hispanic youth will be recognized with a Jos Eduardo Lpez Memorial Scholarship
(JELMS). The hope is that they, like the awards namesake, will use their special talents and
gifts to make this community a better and more just place.
In closing, I would like to extend a special thank you to the organizers for their tireless hard
work in planning this years event. Most particularly, I wish to thank members of the
Hispanic Fraternity Association with whom our Catholic school board has partnered over
the past many years to offer international language programs for children and youth, and
ESL programs for newcomer students. Together, we continue to provide invaluable
opportunities for Hamiltonians to enjoy and participate in the educational, faith, social,
recreational and cultural life of our community.

Este cautivante unipersonal se inspira en las obras del polmico dramaturgo y director colombiano Jos Manuel Freidel, y
es un potico relato biogrfico del exilio forzado y de la
experiencia de refugiada de una actriz colombiana que
actualmente vive en Canad.
La obra es interpretada con excelencia por Liliana
Surez , y se ha presentado en el Impact Festival, el
festival Ritmo y Color de Harbourfront Centre, y el congreso
And Social Justice for All en la Universidad de York, y
en Montreal.

The Refuge of Freidel

This monologue is more than a womans story.
It is an account of an artists journey and
her craft. It is socially engaging, daring
and deeply profound. It gives the typical
immigration tale a real spin and challenges us to see our immigrant and
refugee population in a new light.
Inspired by the plays of one of Colombias most controversial playwright/
directors, Jos Manuel Freidel, this
compelling one-woman show is a
poetic biographical account of the
forced exile and refugee experience
of a Colombian actor now living in
Canada.

La risa y su capacidad para brindar bienestar
Vas caminando por la calle y de repente escuchas
unas carcajadas tan espontneas y estruendosas
que sin reparo alguno, te llevan a disfrutar de aquel
momento y hasta a sonrer sin tener idea alguna
del motivo ni las personas que las produjo. Te es
familiar esta situacin?
Cada vez son ms las personas que se suman a
grupos donde se promueve la risa como instrumento
generador de bienestar. Esto no nos sorprende: la
risa ha demostrado proveer una serie de beneficios
mejorando nuestra salud mental, emocional y fsica.
La Risa como Terapia, tambin conocida como
Yoga de la Risa, es una prctica en la que se realizan
una serie de ejercicios divertidos combinados con
respiraciones yguicas (esa respiracin natural
olvidada, que se caracteriza por ser profunda y
rtmica y que involucra enteramente a los pulmones
y emplea la capacidad completa del diafragma). En
la terapia de la risa no necesitamos chistes, humor ni
comedia para rernos de manera sostenida durante
un tiempo prudencial.

Laughter and its capacity to assist with our wellbeing

Imagine yourself walking down a street and all of
a sudden you hear spontaneous and extraneous
laughter that doesnt seem to stop anytime soon.
This allows you to also participate in that moment

More and more people are joining the movement
that promotes laughter as a tool to generate
wellness and wellbeing. This doesnt come as
a surprise to us, laughter has proven to come

Laughter as therapy, also known as Laughter Yoga,
is a practice that is realized with series of fun
exercises that are combined with yoga breathing
(breathing that is natural, that is characterized as
profound and rhythmic, which includes using your
lungs wholly, and the diaphragm). In Laughter
Therapy, telling jokes or using comedy are not
necessary for us to laugh.

Waves of Immigration
Walking alongside my brother who
walks before me with his torn and dusty
sandals, he made a path for me I travel
by boat, by land and by plane I travel for
education, a new life, freedom I smell of
Sabana, of far away Andes, the pacific
ocean, the prairies and the amazon full
of chocolate and coffee on my journey.
I pour parts of myself out. I look towards
the horizon, filling my lungs with the
smell of these lands one last time I touch
the flowers, the fruit, the ocean, telling
each of them not forget me as I go along
this journey.
I am bread, l am life, I am ocean In my
arms I carry the heat of the sun that
goes with the farmer, my brother who
feeds me daily.
In my arms I carry the grandmas that
look for their missing grandchildren, in
my arms I carry my family member that
left without quenching their thirst for
life.

I see a long journey ahead, I see this

journey as close, I see a journey full
of light, I see the journey amidst the
mountains, amidst the hurricanes, but I
see the journey.
I see it because of my brother who has
walked ahead of me has made a wave
of light so that I might be able to see
ahead.
In these far away lands I smell of Sabana,
of far away Andes, the pacific ocean, the
prairies and the amazon full of chocolate
and coffee
We are bread, we are life, we are ocean
we are the path of the latinos of
yesterday, today and tomorrow we are
the wave of Latino America wherever
we go, we are the son that greets our
brother that comes from far away lands
of south and central Latin America and
the Caribbean, with open arms we unite
on this walk on Turtle Island also known
as, Canada.

RUTAS panamericanas is back!

HERITAGE WEEK 2016

From October 5-16 this international festival gathers artists and communities from across the Americas to witness, experience and celebrate the rich diversity of our hemisphere. The works and artists
we have invited to be part of this third edition are truly exceptional.
These artists are builders of communities in a number of ways.
Antigonas Womens Tribunal has been an important theatrical voice
in the peace talks in Colombia. Luz Marina Bernal, one of the actresses, is one of this years Nobel Peace Prize Nominees.
Hamlet of the Andes told through Spanish and Quechua - sees Hamlet as a Bolivian man whose modern sensibility is in conflict with his
ancestral values, and Native Earth Performing Arts (NEPA), our partner in the festival, brings SolOthello from New Zealand, a play that
treats Othello as a Maori story!
RUTAS also brings artists who relentlessly transform the experience
of living in diaspora across many artistic forms: Undefined Fraction,
Loco7s take on Calderon de la Barca Life is a Dream, ask questions
about the self in todays USA with their astonishing puppets and the
dance choreography of Federico Restrepo.
If Silence Knew, Cristina Castrillos study on language in the form of a
performance without words, follows four decades of a life on stage.
In Broken Tailbone, Carmen Aguirre translates a history of revolution
with her body in an unforgettable dance lesson with the audience.
ImShift, by Victoria Mata and Alejandra Higuera, draws upon movement and multi-media collage to create a poetic physical and mental
space for the border.
The festival is also thrilled to invite one of Torontos oldest and wisest companies from the Carribbean Diaspora, b current, to take us
through 25 years of their history.
RUTAS panamericanas is delighted to bring to Canada works that fully
represent other worlds and cultures. The source of our abundance on
this continent is our diversity. Our differences. This is what excites me
about the festival this year. We are once again, saying YES to all the
possibilities.
RUTAS panamericanas is produced by Aluna Theatre in partnership
with Native Earth Performing Arts from October 5-16 at the Aki Studio
and Ada Slaight Hall, Artscape Daniels Spectrum at 565 Dundas St.

La comunidad Latina ha estado presente en Hamilton por mas de 40 aos. La influencia

y servicio que la comunidad ha brindado se ve por medio de la contribucin a travs de
negocios, arte y servicio a la comunidad. En esta edicin, varias familias hispanas nos
comparten sus historias sobre el pasado de Hamilton y los cambios del presente.

Familia Weimer

Mara Weimer, lleg a Canad desde Mxico hace muchos aos.

Al principio fue muy difcil estar lejos de su familia, adems del
choque cultural, la barrera del idioma y el ajustamiento al clima.
Mara hizo trabajo voluntario lo que le facilit encontrar trabajo
permanente. Con el tiempo se fue involucrando en diferentes
actividades de apoyo a los recin llegados. Canad brinda muchas
oportunidades y nos permite sentirnos orgullosos de nuestras
races.
Maria Weimer emigrated to Canada from Mexico many years ago.
At first it was really difficult, I missed my family, I had culture shock,
language was a barrier and I had to get used to weather. I adapted
day by day. I found a volunteer job that later helped her with
finding a permanent job. With time she started to get involved
in different activities that were offered and assisted newcomers
in our community. Canada has given us many opportunities and
has allowed us to also maintain our culture, always feeling proud
of our roots.

Familia Navarro

Eduardo Navarro y su esposa Ana Mara, llegaron a Burlington,

Canad hace 40 aos con sus hijos Juan Eduardo y Maritza.
Su tercera hija, Cristina, naci en Hamilton. En ese entonces,
haba menos de 800 personas que hablaban espaol en el rea.
Actualmente hay ms de 15,000 personas. La comunidad hispana
en Hamilton en las ltimas 4 dcadas ha contribuido activamente
al desarrollo social y econmico de nuestra Ciudad.
Eduardo Navarro and his wife Ana Maria arrived to Burlington,
Canada 40 years ago with two children, Juan Eduardo and
Maritza. The third child, Cristina was born in Hamilton. When
they arrived there were less than 800 Spanish speaking people in
the area. Today there are more than 15,000 people in the Latino
community in Hamilton. In the past 4 decades, the Hispanic
community in Hamilton has actively contributed to the social and
economic development of our City.

Familia Do Carmo

Idalecio Do Carmo, junto a su esposa Mara y sus dos hijos Maria

y Manuel, llegaron desde Venezuela a Hamilton hace 21 aos. Su
tercer hijo, Luis naci en Hamilton. El esfuerzo y la perseverancia
le dieron la oportunidad a Idalecio de comenzar su negocio C&DC
Orthomobility Services del que desde hace 11 aos es co-dueo.
Un gran cambio que los Do Carmo han visto en Hamilton, es la
mayor visibilidad de la comunidad hispana, no solo en el aspecto
econmico, sino tambin social y cultural.
Idalecio Do Carmo, his wife Maria and their two children Maria
and Manuel, emigrated from Venezuela to Hamilton 21 years
ago. Their third child, Luis was born in Canada. Their hard work
and perseverance have given Idalecio the opportunity to start his
business C&DC Orthomobility Services where he has been coowner for eleven years. One of the major changes the Do Carmo
Family has seen in our city, is the large visibility our community
now has, with contributions in financial, social and cultural spheres.

The Latino community has been present in Hamilton for more than 40 years. The influence
and service they have brought to this community is seen in their contribution through;
businesses, arts and community service. Here we take a look back at some of our community
members that have been for many years as they give us a glimpse into what Hamilton was
like and what has changed.

Familia Rosas

Csar Rosas lleg a Canad desde Per. Conoci a Luca que

era originalmente de Colombia y despus de vivir en Alberta se
radicaron en Hamilton en 1976. Cuando llegaron a Hamilton no
exista mayor apoyo a los inmigrantes. Hoy Hamilton goza de una
gama de servicios sociales y agencias gubernamentales.
Cesar Rosas moved to Canada from Peru. He met Lucia, originally
from Colombia and they Lived in Alberta but later moved to
Hamilton in 1976.
When the Rosa Family moved to Hamilton, community agencies
targeted at the Hispanic community did not exist. Now Hamilton,
is filled with an array of social services for newcomers, that assist
through the help of social work agencies and organizations.

Familia Rodrguez

Csar Rodrguez Jr. lleg a Canad de Guatemala hace 25 aos,

posteriormente, se cas con Leticia (de origen Argentino) y tienen su
hija Carina. Cuando Csar empez su empresa Serve U Accounting,
slo tena como 5 clientes, ahora cuenta con la confianza de casi
1,700. Otro de los cambios que Csar hoy observa es el apoyo
de la comunidad hacia la propia comunidad. Canad est lleno de
oportunidades y le da gracias a Dios por haberle trado a este pas.
My name is Cesar Rodriguez Jr, I came to Canada from Guatemala
25 years ago. During my early journey in Canada he married Leticia,
originally from Argentina. They have a daughter, Carina. When I
started my business, Serve U Accounting I only had about 5 clients
and this year I have reached about 1,700 clients. A significant change
I see in Hamilton is the commitment to the Hispanic community for
helping its own community. Canada is filled with opportunities and
I am grateful to God for having allowed me to come to this country
of milk and honey.

Familia Gnzalez

Milagro y Efran Gonzlez, llegaron a Hamilton hace 31 aos con

sus tres hijos; Delmy, Elmer y Geovanny. La Familia Gonzlez, junto
a muchas otras familias fue instrumental en abrir las puertas de su
casa en solidaridad a nuevos inmigrantes latinoamericanos. En todos estos aos la familia ha crecido mucho, pero mantiene su labor
de servir a la comunidad latina y siempre fomentando y manteniendo sus races con la nueva generacin.
Milagro and Efrain Gonzalez arrived to Hamilton 31 years ago, with
their three children, Delmy, Elmer and Geovanny. The Gonzalez
Family was instrumental in the community for having their home
open in solidarity with Latino newcomers. The Gonzalez Family has
grown a lot since they first came, but their commitment to serving
the community and maintaining their roots continues to live on with
the new generation.

As we prepare to celebrate
Canadas 150th, we have wanted
to reflect the contribution that
newcomers in our community
are doing. Six young Hispanic
people share with us their desire
to progress and contribute in
Canada while reflecting on the
desire that many young people
and hispanic immigrants who
have chosen Canada as their
new home.

RICARDO AMURRIO

Hola, mi nombre es Ricardo Amurrio y nac en Cochabamba, Bolivia en Abril de 1993. Me vine
a vivir a Canad en Enero del 2011. Estudi la carrera de Proteccin, Seguridad e Investigacin
en Mohawk College gradundome en Junio del 2015. Actualmente soy un Polica Auxiliar en el
departamento de polica de la ciudad de Hamilton. Estudi esta carrera porque quiero contribuir
a la seguridad de mi comunidad y protejer a sus ciudadanos. Tambin quiero ayudar a mantener
la buena reputacin de Canad como uno de los pases con mejor calidad de vida.
Hello, My name is Ricardo Amurrio and I was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia ,April 1993. I emigrated
to Canada in January 2011. I studied, Protection, Security and Investigation at Mohawk College,
graduating in June 2015. Presently, I work as an assistant Police Officer with the Hamilton Police
Department. I chose this career because I want to contribute to the security and wellbeing of
our citizens. I also want to maintain the amazing reputation Canada has on a global scale, due
to its quality of life.

EFRAN RODRGUEZ
Efran llego a Canad a Montreal en 2013 de El Salvador, con su esposa Diana, y su hijo Santiago.
En 2013 naci su segundo hijo Esteban. Y reside en Hamilton desde el 2014.
Efran es diseador grfico y estudia en el programa de LINC en el Mohawk College y una de
sus metas es colaborar con a la comunidad utilizando sus habilidades y conocimientos.
Efrain came to Canada and lived in Montreal in 2013 from El Salvador, with his wife Diana and
his son Santiago. In 2013 his second son Esteban was born. Efrain and his family live in family
since 2014.
Efrain is a graphic designer and studies in the LINC program at Mohawk College and one of his
goals is to collaborate with the community using his abilities and knowledge.

CAMILA AVENDAO
Nac en Santiago, Chile. Estudio Artes Visuales en la Universidad de Brock. Como inmigrante a
Canad, espero entregar a la sociedad canadiense inspiracin y apoyo a aquellas personas con
pensamientos creativos para que persigan y logren sus objetivos. Personas de origen hispano
deben usar todos los talentos que poseemos junto con nuestra perspectiva nica para propagar
positividad y mejorar las condiciones para aquellos que nos seguirn.
I was born in Santiago, Chile. I study Visual Arts at Brock University. As an immigrant to Canada,
I hope to give back to Canadian society by providing inspiration and support to creative
thinkers to chase and achieve their goals. Individuals of Hispanic backgrounds must all use the
talents we possess along with our unique perspectives to spread positivity and improve the
circumstances for those who will follow.

ANA MARA RIVERA

Naci en Colombia y llegue a Canada en el 2005.Estudio psicologia en la Universidad de
McMaster . Mis metas en la comunidad hispana y canadiense es trabajar en el consejo escolar
de escuelas o ciudades integrando la importancia en la vida familiar y el cuidado del medio
ambiente. Actualmente soy miembro ejecutivo de OLAS en la McMaster donde intregramos a
personas de origen hispano o canadienses que quieren conocer mas de la cultura o sentirse en
casa con mas hispanos!
I was born in Colombia and arrived in Canada in 2005. I study Psychology at McMaster University.
My goals are to work within the community, serving in the school council, integrating the
importance of family life and the environment. Presently I am an executive member of OLAS at
McMaster where Latinos and Canadians alike are able to share and feel at home.

DIEGO ORTIZ
Mi nombre es Diego Ortiz y nac en Chihuahua, Mexico. Me vine a vivir a Canad en marzo del
2005. Actualmente me enccuentro estudiando mi Segundo ao de Terapia con Recreacin en
Mohawk College. Escog esta carrera porque me da la oportunidad de compartir con personas
con alguna deficiencia fsica, mental, intelectual o sensorial y para seguir contribuyendo en
este pais; haciendo enfasis en sus derechos humanos y ha ser tratados con igualdad.
My name is Diego Ortiz, and I was born in Chihuahua Mexico. I emigrated to Canada, March 2015.
Presently I am in my second year at Mohawk College in the Recreational Therapy program. I
chose this career because it gives me the opportunity to contribute to the communitys health,
in the fields of physical, mental and intellectual health. This helps me serve the community,
emphasizing in Human Rights and Equality.

Julio Narvez
Julio Narvez fue un inmigrante
Colombiano
que,
como
la
gran mayora de nosotros, que
buscando otras tierras para
enraizar nuestras vidas, lleg a
Hamilton, Ontario con su esposa
Lina, y con maletas cargadas de
sueos.
Julio, como hace poco supimos
por sus familiares, fue una
persona que en su nativo pas no
era de muchos amigos, ms bien,
introvertido. Recin llegado a
Hamilton, empez a conocer otros
hispanos como l y rpidamente
se uni a la Asociacin Fraternidad
Hispana (AFH). Desde el momento
en que se hizo miembro de
nuestra organizacin, empez a
trabajar en forma voluntaria en
muchas de las actividades que se
programaban.

El aporte de Julio a nuestra

comunidad fue aun ms all, ya
que muchas veces ayud a recin
llegados mudando muebles y
artefactos para facilitar sus vidas,
o muchas veces ense a nios o
compaeros en sus estudios.
Afectado por una enfermedad,
Julio respondi el llamado de Dios
en Marzo de este ao.
Julio, fsicamente ya no est con
nosotros, pero su legado y ejemplo
de entrega a su comunidad, queda
presente.
Para mantener ese ejemplo vivo
de servicio, nuestra asociacin ha
querido nombrar el campeonato
de futbol de saln que ao tras ao
AFH organiza en honor a Julio. As,
de esta manera, este campeonato
se llamar Campeonato de Futbol
de Saln Julio Narvez.
Querido Julio, desde las pginas
de esta revista, te reiteramos las
gracias por todo lo que hiciste
por nuestra comunidad y como
miembro de nuestra Asociacin
Fraternidad Hispana.
Julio Narvaez was a Colombian
immigrant who, like most of
us looking for other lands
to root our lives, came to
Hamilton, Ontario with
his wife Lina, and
with suitcases full of
dreams.
Julio, as we
recently learned
from his family,

was a person who in his native

country was not of too many
friends. Rather introverted, in his
early days in Hamilton, he began
to meet other Hispanics like him
and quickly joined the Fraternity
Hispanic Association (AFH from its
Spanish name). From the moment
He became member of our
organization, Julio began working
as a volunteer in many of the AFH
programmed activities.
Julios
contribution
to
our
community went even further,
since often, he could be seen
helping newcomers and whoever
needed, moving furniture and
appliances to facilitate their lives.
He also often tutored school
children or classmates.
Afflicted with a disease, Julio
answered Gods call in March of
this year.
Julio, physically, is no longer with
us, but his legacy and example of
dedication to their community, is
present.
To keep his living example of
service, our association wanted to
honour our yearly indoor soccer
championship in his name. Based
on this, this years Championship
has been named Campeonato de
Futbol de Saln Julio Narvaez.
Dear Julio, from the pages of
this magazine, we reiterate our
gratitude for all what you did for
our community and as a member
of
our
Fraternity
Hispanic

JELMS SCHOLARSHIPS

Las becas JELMS sern otorgadas durante la Feria Hispana el Sbado 15 de Octubre (Pg 23)
El objetivo de la Beca en Memoria de Jos Eduardo Lpez JELMS es simple: ofrecer
sin compromiso alguno, apoyo financiero a estudiantes latinos que se esfuerzan
tanto y ayudarles con los elevados costos de la educacin pos-secundaria. Esta
Beca es posible gracias al apoyo efusivo que hemos recibido. Lo que comenz
como una idea, ha florecido y se ha convertido en un increble esfuerzo colectivo
de la comunidad de Hamilton. El otro da alguien se refiri a JELMS como la beca
de Nora - y yo simplemente no puedo tomar el crdito por lo que es, en realidad,
un enorme proyecto comunitario. Desde el nacimiento de la idea en el 2008 hasta
la fecha, JELMS ha crecido a ser la beca de la comunidad. Una persona slo
puede hacer tanto, es la unidad que nos ha permitido crecer y alcanzar nuestra
meta.
Hasta la fecha, JELMS ha concedido $ 28,000 en becas, que van desde $ 500
a $ 3000, a veinte estudiantes. El ao pasado, otorgamos
un rcord de $ 7,500.00 a siete estudiantes sobresalientes.
Sabemos que el dinero no resuelve todos los problemas
que se enfrentan los jvenes hispanos, pero este proyecto
enva un mensaje muy importante: TU COMUNIDAD
EST UNIDA APOYANDOTE EN TUS ESFUERZOS EN
ALCANZAR EL XITO. CREEMOS EN TI Y ESTAMOS
ORGULLOSOS DE TI!
La Junta Directiva de JELMS agradece infinitamente

Picnic 2016
El 6 de Agosto de este ao se llev a cabo el picnic anual de la Asociacin Fraternidad Hispana. Este evento se realiz en el Dundas Driving Park y cont con la presencia
de ms de 200 personas. Durante este picnic, nios y adultos tuvieron la oportunidad
de compartir unas sabrosas hamburguesas y perros calientes adems de entretenerse
con los juegos para nios y alegres y amistosas conversaciones con otros miembros de
nuestra comunidad.
The 6th of August of this year, the Fraternity Hispanic Association had its annual picnic.
This event was held at the Dundas Driving Park and it was attended by more than 200
people. Children and adults attending this picnic had the opportunity to eat delicious
hamburgers and hotdogs prepared by the AFH, to enjoy the games for the children and
the chance to meet and talk with other members of our community.

El torneo de Futsal-AFH realizado durante

la temporada de invierno de 2016 marca
la 6ta jornada de este popular programa.
Este ltimo torneo tuvo un carcter especial ya que se efectu en colaboracin con
Hamilton Futsal lo que ayud para elevar
los niveles de competencia deportiva. El
tradicional torneo de ftbol fue cambiado
y adaptado a las reglas de juego del futsal
con su propio manual y tipo de arbitraje. La
visin de AFH sobre este torneo sigue vigente, que es la de proveer programas de
deporte con juego limpio, accesible a toda
la comunidad, que fomenta el deporte y

campen del torneo 2016. En total participaron 8 equipos con 63 jugadores disputando 10 jornadas de competencias.
AFH decidi que este torneo tendr el
nombre permanente de Julio Narvez en
conmemoracin y honor a nuestro gran
amigo que fue uno de los pioneros del programa de ftbol y deportes de la AFH.
La jornada de Futsal del 2017 est programada para Febrero 2017 y registros
comenzarn en Diciembre 2016.

tournament allowed AFH to offer a different version of indoor soccer with its own
rules of the game, a sport quickly gaining attention and interest here in Ontario
within the Latino Communities. The tournaments competition started on February
5th 2016 with 8 teams competing, the final
was played on Saturday April 16 where the
C.A.F.C team claimed the championship
title. In total 63 players participated in the
tournament, this new experience allowed
us to offer new opportunities for players to
gain knowledge and skills in the discipline
of Futsal.
The tournament has now been assigned
a permanent name of Julio Narvaez AFH
Futsal Tournament in honour and memory
of our dear friend and great collaborator of
AFHs soccer, and sport program from the
early beginnings.
The tournament for 2017 will begin in February 2017 and registrations will commence
in December 2016

This year would be the 6th year of the indoor soccer tournament and would mark
a new experience and partnership formed
with Hamilton Futsal that took our annual indoor tournament to new levels where
the game of Futsal would be practiced. We
moved away from the traditional indoor
soccer tournament and introduced and
adapted to Futsals rules and regulations
with futsal licenced referring keeping in

Desfile de Santa Claus | Santa Claus Parade

The Fraternity Hispanic Association for the third time
in a row participated in Hamiltons Annual Santa
Claus Parade. The theme of the associations original
float was the Minions. As it has occurred in previous
participations, volunteers from our community used
their creativity to make gigantic representations of the
selected characters. In a beautifully decorated float and
wearing attractive customs, children of our community
and volunteers showed to thousands of people in the
streets of Hamilton the product of our work.
La Asociacin Fraternidad Hispana, por tercer ao
consecutivo, particip en el desfile anual de Santa
Claus en Hamilton. El tema de la carroza, original de
nuevo para este tercer ao, fue Los Miniones. Como
ha ocurrido en nuestras participaciones anteriores,
voluntarios de nuestra comunidad usaron su creatividad
para reproducir figuras gigantescas de los caracteres
elegidos. En una carroza hermosamente decorada
y usando atractivos disfraces, nios y voluntarios de
nuestra comunidad, mostraron a las miles de personas
que se apostaron en las calles de la ciudad para ver el
desfile, el producto de nuestro trabajo.
