NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on

Saturday issued its second
attachment order for assets
worth Rs 6,630 crore against
beleaguered businessman
Vijay Mallya as it seized his
farmhouse, flats and FDs in
connection with its money
laundering case against him
and his associates.
The agency had recently
expanded the probe in this
regard as it took over investigation into the alleged loan
default of Rs 6,027 crore
availed from a consortium of
nationalised banks led by
SBI, a case also taken over
by CBI recently.
The fresh action is an aftermath of the new case. The
total attachment made by
the agency in this case has
now shot up to Rs 8,044
crore as it had attached assets worth Rs 1,411 crore few
months back. The provisional attachment order, issued under the provisions
of the Prevention of Money
Laundering Act (PMLA),
said it has ordered for seizing a farm house in Mandwa
in Alibaugh worth Rs 25
crore, multiple flats in Kingfisher tower in Bengaluru
worth Rs 565 crore, fixed
deposits of Mallya with a

NEW DELHI: Riding on

at domestic spot market,
gold prices advanced by Rs
30 to trade at Rs 31,000 per
ten grams, while silver
prices soared Rs 800 to Rs
45,900 per kg at the bullion
market on Saturday.
Sentiment bolstered as
gold gained in global markets after US employment
data missed estimates,
boosting the metals appeal
as a safe-haven, bullion
traders said. Globally, gold
rose by 0.7 per cent to USD
1,326.70 an ounce and silver by 2.2 per cent to USD

in Friday's trade. Besides,
pick-up in buying by jewellers at domestic spot market to meet retailers' demand supported the upside,
they said. (PTI)

Prabhu said. LIC had agreed
to invest Rs 1.5 trillion in
various commercially viable
railway projects last year
and out of the total it has
already invested Rs 10,000

He said Railways will

MORTUARY VANS:

The properties of Vijay Mallya, UB city mall in

Bengaluru on Saturday. (PTI)
private bank to the tune of
Rs 10 crore and shares of
USL, United Breweries Limited and Mcdowell Holding
company, jointly held by the
liquor baron and UBHL and
his controlled entities,
worth Rs 3,635 crore.
"The total attachment
under today's order is worth
Rs 4,234.84 crore but the
present market value of
these properties and assets
is Rs 6,630 crore approximately," the agency's order
said.
The agency alleged
these assets were the "proceeds generated out of
criminal activity" of the al-

leged default of bank loans

as it claimed Mallya "criminally conspired" with Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) and
United Breweries Holdings
Limited to obtain funds
through the consortium of
banks and out of this total
amount, the principal fund
of Rs 4,930.34 crore "still remains unpaid."
"In addition, huge
number of shares were also
being held in the name of
various other group companies controlled directly or
indirectly by Mallya.
Hence, it appeared that
even though sufficient
funds were available with

the promoters of KFA-Mallya and UBHL-- they had

no intention to make payment towards the bank
loans from the consortium
banks.
"They deliberately and
intentionally kept the huge
number of shares approximately worth Rs 3,600 crore
pledged with UTI Investment Advisory Services Ltd
and other financial institutions without substantial
underlying liabilities and
thus kept the consortium in
dark," the ED said in the order, accessed by PTI.
ED had recently filed a
fresh PMLA case against
Mallya and his associates
after it booked him earlier
under the criminal law in a
case of similar alleged bank
loan default of Rs 900 crore
against IDBI bank.
The CBI also, early last
month, filed this fresh case
under IPC sections related
to criminal conspiracy and
cheating against Mallya on
the basis of a complaint received from SBI on behalf
of the consortium of lenders for allegedly causing a
loss of Rs 6,027 crore to them
by not keeping repayment
commitments of loan taken
during 2005-10. (PTI)

that he will be available for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh. The future of the tour was in the balance after an
attack on a Dhaka cafe in July killed 20 -- mostly foreign
-- hostages, with the Islamic State group claiming responsibility. But all-rounder Ali, speaking in Cardiff on
Saturday ahead of England's fifth and final one-day international against Pakistan in the Welsh capital on Sunday, said: "If selected, I'll definitely go. "I'm pretty happy
with everything and really looking forward to it," the
Worcestershire player added. (AFP)

Kohli may miss Duleep final

NEW DELHI: Keeping in mind the gruelling home season ahead, India's Test skipper Virat Kohli has reportedly asked for rest and may miss the pink ball Duleep
Trophy final, scheduled to be held under lights from
September 10-14. Kohli is just coming off a long fourmatch Test series in the West Indies, which was followed by two T20 Internationals in the US, and the
Cricket Board believes that the batting mainstay should
be given rest to prepare himself for the upcoming assignment against New Zealand. Initially, the plan was to
make Kohli and other senior players play the final, and
get their reactions on the pink ball initiative. (PTI)

NEW YORK: Tennis is everywhere in New York during

the US Open -- except, apparently, on the courts
where defending champion
Novak Djokovic is scheduled to play.
The top-ranked Serbian
was handed a virtual free
pass on Friday, when thirdround foe Mikhail Youzhny
of Russia retired with a left
hamstring injury while trailing 4-2 in the first set.
That followed Djokovic's
move into the third round on
a walkover from Czech Jiri
Vesely.
Meanwhile, two-time
champion Rafael Nadal
moved into the fourth round
of the US Open with a 6-1,
6-4, 6-2 victory over Russian
Andrey Kuznetsov. Nadal,
seeded fourth, hasn't
dropped a set in reaching
the last 16 of a tournament
he won in 2010 and 2013.
He next faces France's
24th-seeded Lucas Pouille,
a 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 winner over Spain's 15thseeded Roberto Bautista
Agut.
"This particular situation
I never had in my Grand
Slam career," said Djokovic,
who said there were good

and bad aspects to his unexpected free ride.

"Considering the stage
of the season, the amount
of matches I've played, what
I've been through with my
body, I think it's actually
good to have some days off
and then shorter matches -from one side," Djokovic
said.
"From the other side,
sure, as you are approaching the second week of the
Grand Slam you want to
have match play and you
want to have time spent on
the center court before you
face one of the top players."
All of the unexpected free
time means Djokovic has
even more chance to check
out what his rivals are doing in the tournament.
"I follow, of course," he
said. "Once you're in a
Grand Slam you watch a
match or two when you're
back in your hotel room.
Mostly when I'm training,
days off, or when I'm here
the day of my match, tennis
is everywhere, on each TV.
"Not only in the tennis
facility, but all over the city.
You can feel that kind of
vibe."
While Djokovic hasn't

had much chance to build a

buzz himself, he said he
thought the benefits, on
balance, outweighed any
downside.
"I'm confident that everything is going in the right
direction," said the Serb,
who next faces 21-year-old
Kyle Edmund, who toppled
big-serving American John
Isner 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/5).
After just 32 minutes of
play, Djokovic delighted
fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium
by changing from his match
gear into to a T-shirt and hitting a bevy of practice
serves, with coach Boris
Becker looking on.
Meanwhile,
Rohan
Bopanna was dumped from
the US Open men's doubles
competition even as Sania
Mirza progressed in the
mixed doubles event with
her Croatian partner Ivan
Dodig. Bopanna, who is
partnering Frederik Nielsen
of Denmark were blown
away by American Brian
Baker and Kiwi Marcus
Daniell 2-6 6-7 (5-7).
However there was some
cheer for the Indian fans as
Sania and Dodig, who have
won the US Open mixed
doubles title in 2014 made a

fluent start to their campaign

with a 6-4 6-4 straight set win
over US pair of Donald
Young
and
Taylor
Townsend in just 62 minutes.
Bopanna also played his
mixed doubles first round
match later in the evening
alongside
Canadian
Gabriela Dabrowski beating
US pair of Noah Rubin and
Jamie Loeb 7-5 6-4 in only
67 minutes.
In the junior girls' event,
India's Pranjala Yadlapalli
beat American Victoria
Emma 6-3 6-2.
Bopanna, who hasn't had
a great run in the Grand
Slams of late as the IndoDanish pair were broken
twice before they conceded
the first set 6-2.
It was turning out to be a
cakewalk for the Kiwi-US
pair as they were ready to
serve for the match at 5-3
before Bopanna-Nielsen
broke back to make it 5-5 raising visions of a fightback.
With the help of a minibreak, the Ipair werw up 3-0
in the tie-breaker only to
commit lot of unforced errors before losing the match.
The duration was 74 minutes. (Agencies)

SPL: Lajong thump Nongkrem 3-0

SHILLONG:
Shillong
Lajong FC defeated newcomers Nongkrem SC by 30 in the Shillong Premier
League encounter played at
J N Stadium here on Saturday. Samuela, Hardy and
Jacob each found the net for
the Reds in the last 10 minutes of the match.
Shillong Lajong made it
10 points from thereby
climbing back to the top
spot
Lajong made a bright
start on a cloudy day and
once threatened to open
the scoring after 15 minutes had been played but
it was saved by the
goalkeeper.
Nongkrem enjoyed the
first half but were not quite
as penetrative or aggressive in attacking areas as
they would have liked, it resulted with none opening
the account in the first half.
The first session was
marred by a controversial
decision made by the ref-

eree, where he gave

Lajongs captain Nim
Dorjee a red card and was
sent off for tipping
Nongkrems player.
It was the second half
Lajong really came to life
though, despite being reduced to 10 men. Samuel
Lalmuanpuia broke the
deadlock by scoring on the
84th minute.
The Reds were enjoying
more possession and
pressed forward looking
for a good chance at goal.
Nongkrem played well on
the counter and had couple of good chances to take
the lead and upset Lajong.
Lajong being an experienced team than cemented
their victory by scoring
their second goal in the
88th minute by Hardycliff
Nongbri. The match was
sealed in the 90 th minute
after Jacob took a left
footer shot just on the
edge of the box from the left
and made it to 3-0.

What many in BCCI find

BCCI miffed over ICCs allocation of

USD 135 million for Champions Trophy
NEW DELHI: The BCCI has
expressed its reservations
with the International
Cricket Council's decision to
earmark a budget of USD
135 million (approx) as the
organisational cost for
Champions Trophy scheduled in the United Kingdom
from June 1-18, next year.
The budget is a threefold increase from the USD
45 million that was allocated
to the BCCI by the ICC for
the World T20 held from
March 8 to April 3, earlier
this year.
Whenever ICC conducts
any tournament, a certain
budget is allocated to the

Delhi sign
former Real
star Ruben
Gonzalez

will be handed over to the

England and Wales Cricket
Board (ECB) once the tournament is over.
The draft budget for
Champions Trophy 2017
was circulated by ICC to its
members for review at the
ICC Annual Conference
held in Edinburgh in MayJune.
Accordingly, the BCCI
has sent a letter to the ICC
"expressing their reservations about the budget" and
the matter is expected to be
discussed on the sidelines
of the ICC Chief Executives
meeting to be held in Dubai
on September 6 and 7.

A senior BCCI official,

who played a significant role
in organisation of the 2011
World Cup and ICC World
T20 in 2016, told PTI: "It is
strange but when the ICC
World T20 was held in India, the BCCI organised a
tournament of longer duration at 1/3rd cost.
"Even if we take into account that the costs will be
more in UK as expenditure
will be in GBP (Pounds) but
in India, there are more overheads including logistics as
you need to take flights
from one city to another
which is not the case in England."

The construction of a
new office is also something
that is being questioned.
"Every member has right
to ask as to why all members should pay for office
of one member. Looking at
the far bigger picture, every
penny saved is every penny
earned. This money should
be used judiciously for development of cricket."
As per trends of the various major ICC tournaments
that have been held in the
past decade, BCCI has
found that budget allocation
has been significantly less
compared to what the countries have got. (PTI)

Hamilton takes Monza pole

MONZA: Lewis Hamilton
drew level with legendary
racing drivers Juan Manuel
Fangio and Ayrton Senna in
the record books on Saturday when he flew to pole
ahead of Nico Rosberg for
Sunday's Italian Grand Prix.
The
championship
leader and defending threetime champion clocked a
best lap time of one minute
and 21.135 seconds to
outpace the German by
nearly half a second.
The 'silver arrows' dominated the session to finish
comfortably ahead of the
Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel
and Kimi Raikkonen.
"I was right in the sweet
spot today and I was able
to get an exceptional lap

time out of it," said Hamilton. "What this team has

achieved in phenomenal."
It was Hamilton's third
successive pole at the Italian event and his fifth in all
at Monza, a feat that
equalled those of Argentine
Fangio and Brazilian Senna.
It was also the 56th pole
of Hamilton's career.
Senna was the last man
to achieve a hat-trick of Italy
poles.
Hamilton and Rosberg's
front row lockout was
Mercedes' 41st and enabled
them to equal the record of
dominance set by Red Bull
pairing Vettel and Mark
Webber in their heyday.
Hamilton will be bidding
on Sunday to register a hat-

trick of Italian wins with his

50th career victory to enlarge his nine points lead in
the title race ahead of
Rosberg.
His pole made a pleasant
change from last weekend's
grid when Hamilton started
last in Belgium after penalties, charging through the
pack at Spa-Francorchamps
to claim third.
Valtteri Bottas was fifth
for Williams ahead of Australian Daniel Ricciardo and
his Red Bull team-mate,
Dutch
teenager
Max
Verstappen.
Sergio Perez was eighth
ahead of his Force India
team-mate Nico Hulkenberg
with Esteban Gutierrez taking 10th for Haas. (AFP)
