How has the recession impacted on the box office takings?

• In the recession more people have been going to the cinema in an attempt to escape
from reality; this is because, it is cheaper to go to the cinema then going on days out and
on holidays abroad. The takings have increased by 5% to a record breaking £949 million
last year - it has been said that cinema always does well in an economic downturn, it’s
also been said that the cinema does well within other problems within society; such as
war and money issues.

• This is not always clear cut. Some cinemas are there to target different audiences to
others, the Showcase would offer to show any kind of film; whereas, the Phoenix would
offer a film which would be more specialised. This also alters by how people see the
business and how easy it is for a family to actually get to the place itself.

What does the term “monopolization” mean and why would it be in an exhibitor’s
interests to “monopolize” the field of film showing?
• Monopolization is dominating the market sector, having complete control over the
market would mean that there would be no competition and they could sell the tickets
for there own prices. It in an exhibitors interests to have the complete monopoly of the
market, because they get all of the money from the people going to the cinema as they
have the complete control of the distribution of film.

How are UK films regulated?

• The British board of film council (BBFC) regulate if the film needs to have a specific age
limit and every film needs to have a classification to shown who can go and see the film
legally. The power to change the film’s classification remains with the local council, which
may overall any of the board’s own decision.
