3 STORES MANAGEMENT
INTRTODUCTION :
materials are the life blood of a project. Generally the material cost of
the project will be in the range of 50%-60% of the total cost of the project. In oreder to improve
material management you should give due consideration to following aspect.

Planning

Purchasing

Transportation

Storage

Handling

Prevention of waste etc.

Stores management is essentially and important part in material


management and can be describe as scheduling and supplying of material required for
construction with proper control on .

Cost

Wastage

Time

Quality
And it is a very important part in controlling the total cost of the project.

OBJECTIVE OF STORES MANAGEMENT :


the stores management systems and should be vary to suite the
ongoing requirements of the company. In other words if should be able to adopt to the ongoing
situation. Project priorities may vary time to time and so should the materials in the stores.
Following are the main objectives of stores management,

Supply of good quality materials for the work in time.

Minimize the cost of material , material movement and material handling.

Minimize wastage and pilferage.

In order to achieve the above objectives successfully you must give


due consideration to following aspects,

Procurement of material

Selection of material

Transportation and handling of material

Issuing of material

Cost of material.

MATERIAL PROCURENENT AND PURCHASING STRATGIES :


since material usually constitute the highers cost component of most
construction projects, executing purchasing strategies could have a major impact on the success
of failure of a job.
In case of large organization, computerized order/ requisition system are
use to so as to coordinate the current demands from different sites and economics on purchase
and delivery, storage and handling. In simple terms the following aspect should be considered.

Planning of material suppliers :


Before comentsment of construction it is necessary to know what are the
required material in what quantities, when are they need.
Pretender programme :
Contractor should identify the availability of material, if the use of
particular material is not practical or material is not available, intimate the client and suggest
alternative solutions.

Overall programme :
If a certain material affect a critical activities then delays in supply of that
material lengthens the total project time in such case updating of the programme is necessary.

SELECTING SUPPLIERS / SOURCES.


The price should not be the sole criterion, one price, quality and
availability of material are all important. These are primary factors and there some secondary
factors to also be considered. They are ,

The terms of payment

Whether the quality conforms to both contractual specifications, sri lanka standards.
safety regulation and good /standard practice.

Durability of the particular material.


As regard the availability it is not only the immediate avilbility that must

be ensured but also continuity of suppliers celebrating of suppliers (fulfillment of orders


faithfully whatever the external circumstances)
