The teacher will have students come to the carpet to do mental math and think of
strategies they have used when doing math
The teacher will show the counting up and counting down strategy anchor
charts to the students and explain each one
The teacher will give several different number stories to the students where they
have to use either pictures counting up or down as a strategy
The teacher will divide students into three strategy groups where each group has
to solve several number stories using that specific strategy (pictures, counting
up/down)
The teacher will direct students back to their desk and turn to page 22 in their
math journal
The teacher will read each question to the students and will complete it on their
own
The teacher will have the students turn to page 23 to complete math boxes
The teacher will have students put their math journal away and get ready for
lunch
The students will come to the carpet to do mental math and think of strategies
they have used when doing math and review what we learned the day before
The students will look at the anchor charts to remind them of the counting
up/down strategies
The students will listen to the teacher give number stories and have to solve them
either using a picture, counting up/down strategy
The students will work in their specific strategy group to solve several number
story problems
The students will complete page 22 in their math journal with assistance with the
teacher
The students will do their math boxes on page 23
The students will put their journal away and get ready for lunch

Formative Assessment
When we are discussing different strategies to use, I will go around and check for
understanding to see if students understand what the counting up/down strategy is
while in their strategy groups. I will assist students who may be struggling and
based on an overall class observation, I will continue on with the unit for the next
day if the class understands the concept of strategies.
