Homework Assignment 2
Please submit your solu/on on UBLearns by 2:00 PM 9/16/16
1. An impulse s/mulus consis/ng of 1.25 moles of tracer was applied to a s/rred tank
reactor in order to measure its age func/on and determine whether it could be modeled as an
ideal CSTR. The s/rred tank reactor volume was 2.5 L and the tracer-free, liquid feed was
introduced at a rate of 66.7 mL s-1. The response data are provided in the le
Assignment_2_1_Data.xlsx. Make a plot of the age func/on of the s/rred tank and a plot of the
age func/on for a corresponding ideal CSTR, and based on the plots, determine whether the
s/rred tank can be modeled as ideal.
2. A step change s/mulus was applied to a s/rred tank reactor in order to measure its age
func/on and determine whether it could be modeled as an ideal CSTR. Specically, the reactor
was brought to steady state with a feed containing tracer at a concentra/on of 0.75 mol L-1. The
feed was then suddenly changed to contain no tracer. The s/rred tank reactor volume was 1.5 L
and the liquid feed was introduced at a rate of 100 mL s-1. The response data are provided in
the le Assignment_2_2_Data.xlsx. Make a plot of the age func/on of the s/rred tank and a
plot of the age func/on for a corresponding ideal CSTR, and based on the plots, determine
whether the s/rred tank can be modeled as ideal.
3. Reac/on (3.1), was studied in a batch reactor. In each experiment the reactor
concentra/ons of Y and Z were ini/ally equal to zero and the concentra/ons of A and B were
set to known values. The conversion of A was then measured a[er reac/on for a set length of
/me. All of the experiments were performed in a 100 cm3 reactor at 80 C. The resul/ng data
are given in the the le, Assignment_2_3_Data.xlsx. Determine the best values for the rate
coecient in the rate expression, equa/on (3.2), including 95% condence intervals and decide
whether or not the rate expression is acceptable.

4. The enzyma/c hydrolysis of Dextran was studied in a 1 L CSTR opera/ng at 60 C and

containing 0.1 mg of an immobilized enzyme. Steady state experiments were performed using
dierent inlet concentra/ons of Dextran and dierent space /mes. The outlet concentra/on of

Dextran was measured in each experiment; the resul/ng data are given in the le,
Assignment_2_4_Data.xlsx. The rate per mg of enzyme might obey Michaelis-Menten kine/cs,
equa/on (4.1), where D denotes Dextran. Determine whether this is true, and if it is, determine
the best values for the two parameters in equa/on (4.1), including 95% condence intervals.
