ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

11(a) A 4-mm thick plate of steel is formed into the cross section shown in
Figure locate the shear center for the cross section.

OR

11(b) A composite beam has a symmetrical cross section as shown in Figure. A

vertical web with a thickness of 2 mm is riveted to two square stringers. TWO
horizontal webs, with a thickness of 1 mm, are riveted to the square stringers and
the T-section stringers. Locate the shear center of the cross section.

13(a) A cantilever beam has a length of 3 m with cross section indicated in Figure.

Figure(b). A concentrated load P = 12.0 kN lies in the plane making an angle =

/3 with the x-axis. Load P lies in the plane of the cross section of the free end of
the beam and passes through shear center C. Find that the shear center lies on the y
axis as shown. Locate points of maximum tensile and compressive stresses in the
beam and determine the stress magnitudes.

The beam is constructed by welding two 40 mm by 40 mm steel

(E = 200
GPa) bars longitudinally to the S-200 x 27 steel I-beam
(Ix = 24 x
106 mm4 and Iy = 1.55 x l06 mm4). The bars and I-beam have the same yield
stress, Y = 300 MPa. The beam is subjected to a concentrated load P at the free
end at an angle = /3 with the x axis. Determine the magnitude of P necessary to
initiate yielding in the beam and the resulting deflection of the free end of the
beam.

OR

13(b) An S-610 x 134 I-beam (Ix = 937 x lo6 mm4 and Iy = 18.7 x lo6 mm4) is

12(b) A T-shaped cantilever beam of structural steel is subjected to a transverse

load P at its free end (Fig). The beam is 6.1 m long. According to the Tresca yield
criterion, the material yields when the maximum shear stress reaches 165 MPa.
Determine the maximum load P.

subjected to a bending moment M in a plane with angle = 1.5533 rad; the plane
of the loads is 10 (/180 rad) clockwise from the (y, z) plane of symmetry.
Determine the neutral axis orientation and the ratio of the maximum tensile stress
in the beam to the maximum tensile stress for symmetrical bending.

QM 8.2.4

14(a) A steel beam has the cross section shown in Figure. The beam is made of a
steel having a yield point stress Y = 280 MPa. Determine the fully plastic moment
for the condition that the neutral axis passes through point B. Determine the
orientation of the neutral axis and the plane of the loads.

dimensions of a steel wide-flange section (W760 x 220) are shown in Figure. The
beam is subjected to a twisting moment T = 5000 N m.
(a) Determine the
maximum shear stress max, and its location. Ignore the fillets and stress
concentrations.
(b) Determine the angle of twist per unit length for the applied twisting moment

OR

14(b) A box beam has the cross section shown in Figure the allowable flexural

15(a) A rod with rectangular cross section is used to transmit torque to a machine
frame. It has a width of 40 mm. The fist 3.0-m length of the rod has a depth of 60
mm, and the remaining 1.5-m length has a depth of 30 mm. The rod is made of
steel for which G = 77.5 GPa. For T1 = 750 N m and T2 = 400 N m, determine the
