A LETTER
FROM OUR
LEADERS

Your Federation is on a roll!

Federations purpose is to ensure that Columbus achieves its vision of being a thriving Jewish community at the forefront of the
next renaissance in Jewish life. Federation focuses on three areas and each one had major successes this past year:
Connecting the Jewish Community
Federation coordinated community conversations about the 2013 Portrait of Jewish Columbus demographic study and
determined to dramatically increase emphasis on Camping and Engagement with Israel programs in the future.
Our focus on Young Families paid dividends with over 750 children now receiving PJ Library books monthly.
Atid, our young adult division, now has programming several days a week ensuring that people in their 20s and early 30s
have fun ways to affiliate Jewishly.
Advocating for Jewish Causes
We held a 500+ person rally for Israel during the Gaza war.
Our Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) met with many of our elected officials to voice our support of Israel.
We strengthened current committees and established new groups to focus on Holocaust Education, Interfaith Relations and
Community Security.

Ensuring the Funding of Community Priorities

We received gifts from almost 2,500 people up from 2,050 last year, so our tent is expanding.
We received the largest endowed gift in the history of the Federation with a $6 million endowed gift from the Susan and
Jon Diamond Family Fund.
The future of our community is bright and your Federation is here to collaborate with individuals and institutions to make sure we
achieve our collective goals.

JEWISH FEDERATION OF COLUMBUS ANNUAL REPORT 2015

Federation raised over $7.5 million this past year, the best campaign in six years. This allowed us to invest over $6.5 million
in programs of importance to our community, many of which are run by our partner agencies.

Introduction

89

YEARS OF
FEDERATION
LEADERSHIP

The Federation, founded in 1926, has as its cornerstone the centuries old belief that social justice (Tzedakah) is a community responsibility. In practice, this means that each
Jewish person has the duty to help other Jews - one responsible for the other - one family, one community, one people.
Today there are more than 300 volunteers and 2,500 contributors involved in The Federation, dedicated to strengthening our community and establishing a secure and vital
future for Jewish life worldwide.

We are mindful of our past and thank the leadership listed on page 44, whose tireless efforts created a strong foundation rooted in our core Jewish values.

FIRST
GIFT
A first time gift is the beginning of a philanthropic journey. Whether it is a gift of money or time,
Federation giving is a life-long habit that brings benefits to those who give as well as to the
benefactors of the Federations efforts. It is a habit that everyone can develop, if they have the
right support and opportunities. Whether its a gift of $18 or $1,800, every first gift is critical to our
community and the impact is real and tangible for the donor. Even a small gift brings books to
children, provides a child a week of summer camp, or delivers home care for a holocaust survivor.

WOMENS
PHILANTHROPY
Womens Philanthropy highlights the importance of the power of womens giving. As change agents
and benefactors, women are leveraging their influence to transform our Jewish community both locally
and internationally.
Womens Philanthropy provides opportunities for women of all ages to collaborate and connect.
Through leadership and community service we practice tikkun olam (selfless acts of giving).

PLANNED GIVING
AND ENDOWMENTS
Whether a planned gift is used to provide for the needs of a child to go to camp, to assist the elderly in
our community, to send a student on their first trip to Israel or to rescue Jews in need around the world
no matter where or when in the future, a planned gift enables a donor to be present forever.
The Jon and Susan Diamond Family have created the largest endowment in the Federations history with
a $6,000,000 fund to provide an annual commitment to the Jewish Federation of Columbus, as well as
discretionary distributions to enhance Jewish activity in the Columbus area and connections to Israel.

BEN GURION
SOCIETY
In 1948, David Ben Gurion became the face of a great new generation of Jews. His single-minded passion for
the Jewish people is as much a part of his legacy as the State of Israel itself. Today, the Jewish Federations
Ben Gurion Society is full of young men and women combining their power, passion and resources to build
a strong, responsible Jewish community, at home, in Israel and around the world.
The Society is a national program for individuals ages 2545 who give a minimum of $1,000 to the

OVERNIGHT CAMP
Ask any child what the best time of year is, and they will say summertime. For many, summer means
spending time outdoors at Jewish overnight camp. For these kids, Jewish camp is just plain fun, but its
really much more than that its camp with a soul.
While they are racing down the zipline, singing under the stars, and making lifelong friends they also learn
values like self-confidence, independence, and leadership that stay with them long after the last campfire
of the summer.
At Jewish camp, campers explore their connection to Judaism in a fun and meaningful way while having
the time of their lives. Federation provides financial support for dozens of local children so they can
experience the magic of Jewish overnight camp.

PJ LIBRARY
Reading stories and listening to music with your child are among the most powerful and nurturing early
childhood learning experiences. The Federation engages families with young children between the ages of
six months and eight years old through our PJ Library program. Every month a new book or CD is sent to
more than 750 children in our community free for them to enjoy.
The books and music transform the intimate moment of reading to a child into Jewish moments. Research
indicates that Jewish experiences in a childs earliest years establish the basis of a strong Jewish sense
of self. Funded by Abigail & Leslie Wexner, the Jewish Federation of Columbus and the Harold Grinspoon
Foundation, PJ library is a gift that will nourish a Jewish life and grow with the child.

ISRAEL ENGAGEMENT
There is no place in the world more meaningful for the Jewish people than Israel. While this ancient land has always been home to the Jews, the modern State of Israel, since
1948, has completely transformed what it means to be a Jew. Because of the State of Israel, Jews have a national identity, wherever they live.

Shlichim

JEWISH FEDERATION OF COLUMBUS ANNUAL REPORT 2015

The Shlichim educate people of all

ages in the community about Israel, and
serve as advocates, role models, and as
staff members for Israel programming.
Among the many services that the
Shlichim provide to our community
are the planning and execution of the
annual Yom Haatzmaut celebration.
For several hours every spring,
Columbus becomes a part of Israel,
alive with the music, food, and joy that
accompanies Israels Independence
Day. In 2015, Israel Fest drew over
800 people to the Columbus JCC,
thanks in large measure to the work
of our Shlichim.

Travel Experiences
The Federation Israel experience initiatives are rooted in the idea that Jewish
identity and engagement is strengthened through interactions with the State of
Israel. Every year, Federation offers grants to teens and young adults from
Columbus traveling on organized trips to Israel. Last year, grants were awarded to
more than 50 young people traveling to Israel. Organized travel we support ranges
from as short as a two week mission or summer program to as long as a gap year.
Federation promotes a wide variety of Israel experiences; additionally we offer
several key youth nurturing Israel programs including Birthright, March of the Living
and Young Partners through our Partnership2Gether with Kfar Saba.
Additionally, Federation leads community and family missions to Israel. Participants
explore Israels history, archaeology, culture and politics. Travelers get to spend
time in our partnership city, Kfar Saba, and see, firsthand, programs supported
by Columbuss community dollars.

23

March of the Living

The Federations Taglit-Birthright Israel

program provides a gift of a peer group,
educational trip to Israel for Jewish
young adults ages 18 to 26.

The March of the Living is a two-week

international experience where teens
from around the world come together
each year and bear witness to the
destruction of the Holocaust in Poland
and then travel to Israel to rejoice in
the Jewish homeland.

It is important to our community that

young Jewish people visit Israel, see it,
experience it, talk about it, and think
about what Israel means for them and
the Jewish people.

The program commemorates Yom

HaShoah, (Holocaust Memorial Day), by
marching from Auschwitz to Birkenau
and celebrates Yom HaAtzmaut,
(Israeli Independence Day), in the
streets of Jerusalem.

Partnership2Gether
Partnership2Gether creates long-term partnerships and builds a living bridge between Columbus and
Israel. The goal is to develop and strengthen unity between our Israeli partnership city, Kfar Saba and
Columbus. We accomplish this by fostering meaningful and ongoing ties between the members of each
community, based on a shared endeavor and Jewish identity. This is accomplished through a 13-year
partnership between the Columbus Federation and The Jewish Agency for Israel. It implements a wide
range of programs for a variety of age groups in the areas of education, Jewish identity and community
leadership. The bridges created strengthen the ties to Israel and the close relationship between Israel
and the Diaspora.

elementary school in Kfar Saba.

24

P2G Young Partners

P2G Young Partners is a social-action
program that begins with a three week
trip to Israel, where the Columbus teens
have the opportunity to build bonds with
Kfar Saba teens, tour Israel together, and
plan a meaningful social action project.
The Kfar Saba teens make a return visit
to Columbus the following summer.
The goal is to engender a feeling of
extended family between communities
in Kfar Saba and Columbus, so that we
become a significant part of each
others lives.

JEWISH FEDERATION OF COLUMBUS ANNUAL REPORT 2015

Educational Bridge
TheEducationalBridgeprogram
connects students at the Brenner and
Shilo elementary schools and Rakefet
kindergarten in Kfar Saba with students
at Columbus Jewish Day School and
Columbus Torah Academy. The program
creates shared projects between
the schools, connected classroom
experiences through the Internet as
well as the exchange and sharing of
knowledge between teachers. The
program not only creates ties between
children on different continents, it
creates colleagueship between educators.

Programs

Medical Response
Group
The Medical Response Group (MRG) was
created to provide the Meir Hospital in
Kfar Saba with volunteer U.S. physicians
in the event of a national emergency in
Israel. If Israeli physicians are called to
serve with the reserves, the American
volunteers will be asked to arrive in Israel
within 72 hours for a two-week stay to
provide support to the hospital.

25

JEWISH FEDERATION OF COLUMBUS ANNUAL REPORT 2015

In order to ensure program success,

volunteer dry runs are conducted each
year. The February 2015 trip saw twelve
Columbus-area healthcare professionals,
mostly physicians, make the journey to
train with their Israeli co-professionals.
They also enjoyed local hospitality.

Security

Israel continues to be challenged on

a regular basis by terrorism and nonconventional threats to its security
and even its very existence. At the
same time, Israel is taking courageous
steps in its ongoing efforts toward
peace. Explaining Israels actions and
the environment in which it operates
is often challenging in American
public discourse. Thats why our JCRC
partners with Hillel, Chabad, ADL, and
Ohio Jewish Communities to educate
our constituents on the importance of
a safe and secure Israel to the Jewish
people, to America and
to the world.

The JCRC is the central coordinating and

resource organization for the security of
the Jewish community in the Columbus
area. The Security and Emergency
Preparedness function of the JCRC
works closely with homeland security,
law enforcement and emergency
preparedness agencies at the federal,
state and local levels. We partner with
a wide range of experts to alert Jewish
institutions to threats. We identify and
disseminate best practices for Jewish
institutions in central Ohio.

27

Working with leaders and members

of diverse faiths, the JCRC works to
promote greater understanding and
respect among them, and to reduce
prejudice among faith groups in the
Columbus area.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS INITIATIVE

The Federations Holocaust Survivors Initiative ensures that Columbus survivors of Nazi persecution live
their remaining years in dignity. There are more than 230 survivors of Nazi persecution living here, in the
Columbus area. Their average age is 87. Judaism teaches us to care for one another during times of need.
Our 3 million dollar goal to provide for them has become even more obtainable with the generosity of
a challenge grant from the Wexner family. The grant will match dollar for dollar up to $1.5 million dollars.

LION OF JUDAH

PACE

(WOMENS PHILANTHROPY GIVING LEVEL $5,000)

The Jewish Federation of Columbus is a touchstone of Jewish

life in Columbus: for thousands of Columbus Jews, giving
to the Federations annual campaign is a tradition critical to
maintaining Jewish continuity.

LION OF JUDAH ENDOWMENT

(WOMEN WHO HAVE PERPETUALLY ENDOWED
THEIR LION OF JUDAH GIFT OF $5,000 OR MORE)

JEWISH FEDERATION OF COLUMBUS ANNUAL REPORT 2015

42

Many have ensured that their tradition of Federation giving

extends from generation to generation by establishing a
Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment. When a PACE Fund
is established, the Columbus Jewish Foundation invests the
gift to maximize its value. The annual income from these funds
generates an annual gift to the Federation; the principal
remains intact in perpetuity.
