The Brahmaputra enters India in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, where it is call
ed Siang. It makes a very rapid descent from its original height in Tibet, and f
inally appears in the plains, where it is called Dihang. It flows for about 35 k
m (22 mi) and is joined by the Dibang River and the Lohit River at the head of t
he Assam Valley
The Brahmaputra River (also called as ""Burlung-Buthur"" by the Bodo people of A
ssam), called Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibetan language, originates on the Angsi Glaci
er located on the northern side of the Himalayas in Burang County of Tibet and n
ot Chema-Yungdung glacier, which was previously identified by geographer Swami P
ranavananda in the 1930s.

Majuli is the riverine island formed by River Brahmaputra in Assam in India.

it flows across southern Tibet to break through the Himalayas in great gorges (i
ncluding the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon) and into Arunachal Pradesh (India), w
here it is known as Dihang or Siang.
It flows southwest through the Assam Valley as Brahmaputra and south through Ban
gladesh as the Jamuna (not to be mistaken with Yamuna of India). In the vast Gan
ges Delta, it merges with the Padma, the popular name of the river Ganges in Ban
gladesh, and finally the Meghna and from here it is known as Meghna before empty
ing into the Bay of Bengal
About 1,800 mi (2,900 km) long, the Brahmaputra is an important river for irriga
tion and transportation. The average depth of the river is 124 ft (38 m) and max
imum depth is 380 ft (120 m). The river is prone to catastrophic flooding in spr
ing when the Himalayan snows melt

The river drains the Himalaya east of the Indo-Nepal border, south-central porti
on of the Tibetan plateau above the Ganges basin, south-eastern portion of Tibet
, the Patkai-Bum hills, the northern slopes of the Meghalaya hills, the Assam pl
ains, and the northern portion of Bangladesh. The basin, especially south of Tib
et, is characterized by high levels of rainfall. Kangchenjunga (8,586 m) is the
only peak above 8,000 m, hence is the highest point within the Brahmaputra basin
.
The lower reaches are sacred to Hindus. While most rivers on the Indian subconti
nent have female names, this river has a rare male name, as it means ""son of Br
ahma"" in Sanskrit

In Bangladesh, the Brahmaputra is joined by the Teesta River (or Tista), one of
its largest tributaries. Below the Tista, the Brahmaputra splits into two distri
butary branches. The western branch, which contains the majority of the river's
flow, continues due south as the Jamuna (Jomuna) to merge with the lower Ganges,
called the Padma River (Pdda). The eastern branch, formerly the larger, but now
much smaller, is called the lower or old Brahmaputra (Bromhoputro). It curves so
utheast to join the Meghna River near Dhaka. The Padma and Meghna converge near
Chandpur and flow out into the Bay of Bengal. This final part of the river is ca
lled Meghna.

rovar, the river runs a course through the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, t

The Rig
vedic hymns apply a feminine gender to all the rivers mentioned therein but "Sin
dhu" is the only river attributed with a masculine gender. Sindhu is seen as a s
trong warrior amongst other rivers which are seen as goddesses and compared to c
ows and mares yielding milk and butter. The major cities of the Indus Valley Civ
ilization, such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, date back to around 3300 BC, and re
present some of the largest human habitations of the ancient world. The Indus Va
lley Civilization extended from across Pakistan and northwest India, with an upw
ard reach from east of Jhelum River to Ropar on the upper Sutlej. The coastal se
ttlements extended from Sutkagan Dor at the Pakistan, Iran border to Kutch in mo
dern Gujarat, India. There is an Indus site on the Amu Darya at Shortughai in no
rthern Afghanistan, and the Indus site Alamgirpur at the Hindon River is located
only 28 km (17 mi) from Delhi. To date, over 1,052 cities and settlements have
been found, mainly in the general region of the Ghaggar-Hakra River and its trib
utaries. Among the settlements were the major urban centers of Harappa and Mohen
jo-daro, as well as Lothal, Dholavira, Ganeriwala, and Rakhigarhi. Only 90 96 of m
ore than 800 known Indus Valley sites have been discovered on the Indus and its
tributaries. The Sutlej, now a tributary of the Indus, in Harappan times flowed
into the Ghaggar-Hakra River, in the watershed of which were more Harappan sites
than along the Indus.

"The Narmada also called the Rewa, is a river in central India and the f
ifth longest river in the Indian subcontinent. It is the third longest river tha
t flows entirely within India, after the Godavari and the Krishna. It is also kn
own as ""Life Line of Madhya Pradesh"" for its huge contribution to the state of
Madhya Pradesh in many ways.
It forms the traditional boundary between North India and South India and flows
westwards over a length of 1,312 km (815.2 mi) before draining through the Gulf
of Cambay into the Arabian Sea, 30 km (18.6 mi) west of Bharuch city of Gujarat
It is one of the rivers in India that flows in a rift valley, flowing west betwe
en the Satpura and Vindhya ranges. The other rivers which flow through rift vall
ey include Damodar River in Chota Nagpur Plateau and Tapti. The Tapti River and
Mahi River also flow through rift valleys, but between different ranges. It flow
s through the states of Madhya Pradesh (1,077 km (669.2 mi)), and Maharashtra, (
74 km (46.0 mi)) (35 km (21.7 mi)) then along the border between Madhya Pradesh a
nd Maharashtra (39 km (24.2 mi) and the border between Madhya Pradesh and Gujara
t and in Gujarat (161 km (100.0 mi)).
To Hindus the Narmada is one of the seven holy rivers of India; the other six be
ing Ganges, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswathi, Sindhu, and Kaveri. It is believed tha
t a dip in any of these seven rivers washes one's sins away. According to a lege
nd, the river Ganges, polluted by millions of people bathing in it, assumes the
form of a black cow and comes to the Narmada to bathe and cleanse itself in its
holy waters. Legends also claim that the Narmada River is older than the river G
anges.
There are many fables about the origin of the Narmada. According to one of them,
once Lord Shiva, the Destroyer of the Universe, meditated so hard that he start
ed perspiring. Shiva's sweat accumulated in a tank and started flowing in the fo
rm of a river the Narmada. Another legend has it that two teardrops that fell fr
om the eyes of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, yielded two rivers
the
Narmada and the Son.
Legends also say that for Lord Shiva, the Hindu God, the river is especially sac
red on account of its origin, and it is often called Shankari, i.e., daughter of
Shankar (Lord Shiva). All the pebbles rolling on its bed are said to take the s

hape of his emblem with the saying, ""Narmada Ke Kanker utte Sankar""
The Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, constructed by Rajaraja Chola
, has one of the biggest Banalingas. Adi Shankara met his guru Govinda Bhagavatp
ada on the banks of the river Narmada.
Narmada is also said to have been in love with the Sonbhadra, another river flow
ing on the Chota Nagpur Plateau. According to the Puranas, the Narmada is also c
alled the Rewa, from its leaping motion (from the root 'rev') through its rocky
bed.

d and later Delhi, and meets its tributaries on the way, including Tons, its lar

n, followed by Sindh, the Betwa, and Ken. Most importantly it creates the highly
fertile alluvial, Yamuna-Ganges Doab region between itself and the Ganges in th
e Indo-Gangetic plain. Nearly 57 million people depend on the Yamuna waters. In
Mahabharata, Indraprastha, the capital of Pandavas was also situated on the bank

e indicates that in the distant past the Yamuna was a tributary of the Ghaggar R
