Dear Parent, Staff, and Community Members:
Thope this message finds you and your family well. 11am writing to share some Canton Public
Schools updates with you.
2016 Student Assessment Ri
Last spring, our students were administered a series of state mandated assessments. ‘This
communication is intended to provide you with a brief summary of how our students performed.
‘This Smarter Balanced Assessment is aligned to the English Language Arts (ELA) and
Mathematics State Standards. Overall scores in ELA and Mathematics are reported in scale-
score units, Within the scale-score units, there are four performance levels: Level 1 - Does Not
Meet, Level 2 Approaching, Level 3 ~ Meets, and Level 4 — Exceeds. The percent of Canton
students who scored at Level 3 or above in ELA and Mathematics are shown in the charts below
along with the State percent of students who scored at Level 3 or above.

Below you will find the results of the SAT administered to students of the graduated Class of
2016 and the results of the newly revised SAT administered to all students of the Class of 2017.
‘This assessment is now mandated to be administered to all Grade 11 students in place of the
‘Smarter Balanced Assessment. Because this is a revised assessment, no comparative data is
available.

As you can see, our students continue to perform well above the state average. I am pleased to
recognize the continuous efforts of our students and staff for their hard work in preparing our
students to achieve at high levels in all areas.
‘Track/Field Permanent Lights
‘The Board of Education has recently submitted an application to the Town of Canton Planning
and Zoning Commission for the installation and use of permanent lights on the Canton
Middle/High School track/field complex. An informational meeting will be held Tuesday
evening, October 25" at 7:00 p.m. at the Canton Community Center, Room B. The
Planning and Zoning Commission will consider the Board of Education's application at their
meeting on Wednesday, November 2" at 7:00 p.m. at the Canton Community Center,
Room F. If you have any questions regarding this proposal, feel free to contact Lisa Jones,

Upcoming Building Projects
There are two major building projects schedule to occur this upcoming summer. ‘The remaining
portion of the roof at Cherry Brook Primary School will be replaced, completing the project that
began two years ago. The 46 year old windows at Canton Middle/High School are scheduled for
replacement this upcoming summer. We are currently investigating options for air conditioning
classrooms in conjunction with this project. Pending approvals from the various Boards, this
project will go out to bid within the next few months.
