THE UNIVERSITY OF MAINE

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Maine (Orono, ME) invites applications
for a Lecturer (on-going) to begin August 28, 2017. This is a full-time continuing position, with
reappointment subject to satisfactory performance. The primary responsibility is teaching
courses in the general chemistry program, with the possibility of occasional teaching of courses
in other areas of chemistry. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to develop
innovative and effective approaches to instruction, including participation in the UMaine STEM
Education Signature Area. Other duties may include student advising and appropriate department
or university service. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated excellence in
teaching chemistry at the undergraduate level. The option of summer teaching for additional
compensation is available. Consideration of applications will begin November 15, 2016 and
continue until the position is filled.
Requirements. The position requires a Ph.D. in chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry (http://www.umaine.edu/chemistry) offers the BA, BS, MS, and
PhD degrees in chemistry with American Chemical Society certification for the BS. The
University of Maine is the Land Grant and Sea Grant institution of the state and the flagship
campus of the state system. The University enrolls about 11,000 students, and is situated in
Orono, about 12 miles from Bangor, at the edge of beautiful DownEast Maine. Numerous
cultural activities, excellent public schools in neighborhoods where children can walk to school,
high quality medical care, little traffic, and a reasonable cost of living make the greater Bangor
area a wonderful place to live. The University is located just 60 miles from the scenic Bar Harbor
area and Acadia National Park, and two hours from Portland, offering access to a wealth of
outdoor activities and a thriving restaurant scene.
