Introduction
The R-3 Retrievable Casing Packer is a retrievable set-down packer that features a large bypass
area through the Packer. The bypass area is controlled by a face-seal type bypass valve which is actuated
by a 30-inch stroke mandrel. The Packer is available in a single-grip version for use as a conventional
long-stroke production packer, and in a double-grip version (with hold-down) for combination production
and well stimulation operations.

WARNING
Use of Baker equipment contrary to
manufacturers specification may result in
property damage, serious injury or fatality.

The double-grip packer, for use where pressure

differential from below the packer is anticipated,
features an integral hydraulic button-type holddown that is located below the bypass valve.
The double-grip packer also incorporates a
unique, built-in, differential lock which utilizes a
balance sleeve actuated by pressure from below
the packer. This pressure creates an additional
downward force which, combined with set-down
weight, helps maintain the force necessary to keep
the bypass valve closed.

Operation
The R-3 Retrievable Casing Packer is run in
with the bypass valve in the open position to permit
free circulation both through and around the packer. The packer, which is mechanically set by
means of a J-Slot arrangement, should be run one
foot below setting depth and then raised to the required position (to properly position the J-Slot). To
release from the J-Slot, pick up the tubing, rotate
to the right, and then slack off. The J-Pin will move
clear of the J-Slot and the Cone will move under
the slips. Application of set-down weight (see
chart) closes and seals the bypass valve, sets the
slips, and packs off the packing elements. The formation below the packer, which is now completely
isolated from the annulus above, is accessible only
through the tubing string.
To release the packer, raise the tubing string
the full length of the packer. When the J-Pin shoulders, the J-Slot will be re-engaged, since the JPins on the Bottom Sub are so spaced as to always have one J-Pin located in the J-Slot when the
tubing is picked up. When the tubing is lowered
slightly, the J-Pin automatically engages the J-Slot
if no right-hand torque is in the tubing at the tool.

When the tubing is raised to release the packer,

the bypass valve opens to permit circulation
through and around the packer.
NOTE: If the J-Pin should unjay when the tubing is
slacked off, rotate to the left (only enough to remove any
right-hand torque from the tool) and pick up.

Effect Of Tubing and Annulus Pressure

On Unloader
The unloader in the R-3 Retrievable Casing
Packer is not hydraulically balanced for any specific tubing size. This means that regardless of what
size tubing the packer is run on, changes in tubing
pressure and annulus pressure will act either to
pump the unloader open (by acting against setdown weight) or help hold it closed. It is important,
then, to know how much force will be created, and
in what direction, for a given change in annulus or
tubing pressure.
The values given in the chart Areas (In Sq. In.)
Acted Upon By Tubing and Annulus Pressures
are printed shaded and unshaded. These values
are not only the number of square inches acted
upon by the pressure change, but also the direction of the resultant force. The areas unshaded will
cause, with a pressure increase, a force tending to
hold the unloader closed. The areas shown shaded will result in an upward force, or a force tending
to open the unloader. The directions of the forces
hold true if the tubing and annulus pressures at the
tool are increased.
If the tubing pressure at the tool is decreased,
such as would occur in a swabbing operation, the
direction of force as explained above would be reversed.
The Balance Sleeve in the R-3 Double-Grip
Packer works in this manner: When the tool is set
and packed off, the groove in the Body just below
the Seal is positioned under the snap fingers of the
Balance Sleeve. As tubing pressure is increased,
pressure acts between the two [2] O-rings on the
Balance Sleeve, causing it to move down. When
the bottom bevel on the outside of the snap fingers
meets the inside bevel in the Balance Sleeve
Housing, the snap fingers are forced inward into
the groove in the Body. Tubing pressure continues
to push the Balance Sleeve down until the inside
bevel on the bottom of the snap fingers meets the
bottom bevel of the groove in the Body. The tubing
pressure which moved the Balance Sleeve down is
now holding, through the snap fingers, the Body
down. This force acts in the same direction as setdown weight to help prevent the Body from moving

up under high tubing pressures. If the Body were

to move up, the unloader would open and tubingto-annulus communication would result.
When the annulus pressure is greater than tubing pressure, the Balance Sleeve is held by the annulus pressure, against the Balance Sleeve
Housing. In this position, the fingers of the Balance
Sleeve do not act to help hold the Body down; setdown weight alone must be used to keep the unloader closed. It should be noted that the setdown weight required to keep the unloader
closed need not be added to the weight required to set the packer if the value calculated
is less than the force required to set the tool.
Columns 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 must be multiplied
by the change in pressure at the tool.
Column 3 must be multiplied by the tubing
pressure.
Areas tending to hold the unloader closed are
unshaded.
Areas tending to open the unloader are
shaded.
Multiplying a pressure change by a shaded
figure gives a force tending to open the
unloader.
Multiplying a pressure change by an unshaded
figure gives a force tending to hold the unloader
closed.

When Tubing Pressure Is Greater Than

Annulus Pressure At The Tool
1. Multiply the change in tubing pressure at the
tool by Column 1.
2. Multiply the change in annulus pressure at the
tool by Column 2.
If the total of these two forces is tending to open
the unloader, and is greater than the original
pack-off weight, additional set-down weight is
required. This additional weight is equal to the
difference between the force tending to open
the unloader and required pack-off weight.
3. Multiply the tubing pressure by Column 3.
Since the figure in Column 3 is always shaded,
the resulting force is tending to open the unloader by lifting the tubing at the surface. If by
adding all three forces the result is a force tending to open the unloader and is greater than the
maximum hook-load of the tubing before set-

ting the tool, the tubing will raise and the unloader will be opened. Since the hook-load is
the limiting factor, high pressures at relatively shallow depths might be prohibitive.

When Annulus Pressure Is Greater Than

Tubing Pressure At The Tool
1. Multiply the change in tubing pressure by Column 4.
2. Multiply the change in annulus pressure by
Column 5.
If the total of these two forces is tending to open
the unloader, and is greater than the original
pack-off weight, additional set-down weight is
required. This additional weight is equal to the
difference between the force tending to open
the unloader and the required pack-off weight.
3. Multiply the tubing pressure by Column 3.
Since the figure in Column 3 is always shaded,
the resulting force is tending to open the unloader by lifting the tubing at the surface. If by
adding all three forces the result is a force tending to open the unloader and is greater than the
maximum hook-load of the tubing before setting the tool, the tubing will raise and the unloader will be opened. Since the hook-load is
the limiting factor, high pressures at relatively shallow depths might be prohibitive.

When Annulus Pressure Is Greater Than

Tubing Pressure At The Tool Due To
Swabbing The Tubing
1. Multiply the change in tubing pressure by Column 6.

2. Multiply the change in annulus pressure by

Column 7.
If the result is a force tending to open the unloader, and is greater than the original pack-off
weight, additional set-down weight is required.
This additional weight is equal to the difference
between the force tending to open the unloader
and the required pack-off weight.
NOTE: The above calculations assume the tub-

ing string is suspended in the elevators and

slack off weight on packer can be maintained.
Due to factors such as tubing ballooning, and
thermal expansion or contraction, hydraulic calculations alone may not be sufficient to determine what is happening at the packer. When
working deep at high pressure or with fluid temperature changes, and in cases where the wellhead is flanged up, running the R3DG
TUBEMOVE computer program is necessary
to determine if the unloader will remain closed
under the conditions encountered in each application.
Pressuring operations from below may not be
possible with the R-3 Single-Grip Packer.
The calculations outlined on these pages will
only help determine if the unloader will stay
closed. In the case where tubing pressure is
greater than annulus pressure, additional hydraulic calculations are necessary to determine
how much slack off weight is required to keep
the R-3 Single-Grip Packer from being hydraulically pumped up the hole.

turning until the screwdriver blade flares the
slotted end of the pin or (b) clip the top of the
Restraining Pin off flush with the Button Retainer).
NOTE: All springs suitable for use with Restraining
Pins are color.

Assembly Instructions
Double-Grip Packer
Slip Subassembly
Refer to Drawing Nos. 165-234 and 165-236.
1. Insert Slip in slot of Slip Ring with Slip Retaining
Ring. After Slip is inserted, pull Retaining Ring
down slightly and roll Slip Ring over to next
open slot and insert next Slip. Repeat until all
Slips are installed. Push Slip Ring up under
Slips until Slip Retaining Ring shoulders on bottom of Slip Ring. Place Springs in Slips.
NOTE: Slips must be angled as far as possible to
install Springs. Place Split Ring (Sizes 43 and 45 x
2.38) over Slip Ring. Install Slip Stop Ring on Slip
unit with Cap Screws.

2. Make up Bottom Sub onto Body.

3. Slide Snap Ring on Control Sleeve Nut (Size 43
only) and then Slip Subassembly (with Slip
Stop Ring toward Bottom Sub) over top end of
Body all the way to the Bottom Sub.

5. Move Slip Subassembly up against Cone and

install Snap Ring in groove of Connector
Sleeve. On Size 43 only, make up Connector
Sleeve Nut onto Connector Sleeve. The Slip
Subassembly and Cone are now connected by
Connector Sleeve and travel should be limited
to the length of the Connector Sleeve.
6. Slip the Guide Ring (thread down) over the
Support Sleeve (thread up). Install the Packing
Elements and Spacers on the Support Sleeve
in proper order.
7. Slide Packing Element system over the Body
(Guide Ring toward Cone) and make up Guide
Ring onto Cone.
8. Make up Gage Ring onto Receptacle. Slide Receptacle over Body and make it up onto Support Sleeve.
9. Install Balance Sleeve into Balance Sleeve
Housing by placing the seal end of the Housing
on a wooden block. Install O-ring on Balance
Sleeve and place the fingers into the box end of
the Housing and hit it sharply with a hammer.
When the Balance Sleeve fingers collapse into
the Housing, strike the seal end of the Housing
against the board until the Balance Sleeve
snaps into position.
10.Place Balance Sleeve Spring over lower end of
Balance Sleeve. Slide the Balance Sleeve assembly over the Body and make it up onto Receptacle. Back off the thread until Piston
Retainer grooves line up.
11.Install O-ring in groove on Piston OD. Taking
care not to damage O-rings, install Pistons in
the Receptacle. DO NOT DRIVE THE PISTONS INTO THE RECEPTACLE -- WORK
THEM INTO PLACE. Install Springs and Piston
Retainers and secure them with Flat Head
Screws.
12.Make up the Seal and Seal Adjusting Nut onto
Top Sub and thread Top Sub onto Body.

4. Install Cone over Connector Sleeve and slide
