Inside the units

Each unit opens with a list of learning

outcomes for that chapter.

Each unit has a variety of components that

may include auto-correcting Quick Quizzes

and Review Questions, Technology Activities,
Drag and Drop Interactives, Animations,
QuickTime Videos and Web Destinations.
(Sometimes, there are other components
included that are unique to the website.) The
menu bar on the left of the screen features
links to all related content.

Quick Quizzes generally contain five review

questions related to unit content. Results are
reported and can be sent to any email address
using the panel at the bottom of the results page.

12

TR

Review Questions contain a variety of question

types such as multiple-choice, true and false,
labelling, matching and fill-in-the-blanks.

When multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank

questions are attempted more than once,
the order of the answer choices is changed
randomly.

Where it is possible, automatic feedback is

given for answers. Results are reported and can

be sent to any email address using the panel at
the bottom of the results page.

A Hint button generally directs you to the

most appropriate page in the coursebook to

find the answer.

Drag and Drop interactives allow you to select

the speed/level of difficulty at which you want to
play (Easy, Moderate or Hard).

the top left of the screen.

You can repeat each game as often as you wish

by clicking on the Reset button.

Web Destinations take you to reliable, reviewed

websites relating to the chapter content.

Use LOTE Lab

Before you begin

LOTE Lab allows you to record your own

voice and practise imitating the pronunciation
of native speakers. You will require a
microphone to do this. Most laptops and
some desktop computers have microphones
built in. These can be used, but better
results will be obtained from a stand alone
microphone that does not pick up the internal
sounds of your computer.

To begin using LOTE Lab, you must first

copy the contents of this CD to your hard

drive. LOTE Lab will not run from the CD. If
you are not already running this product from
your hard drive, close all open windows and
restart the CD. When the opening animation
completes, click on the Copy to Hard Drive
button and follow the on-screen instructions.

Start using LOTE Lab

To start LOTE Lab, you can either use the

bookmarks or the buttons on the Home page
to take you to the LOTE Lab start page. Click
on the bookmark link Start LOTELab.

Using the Sample Listening/

Recording tab

There are three modes in the Sample

Listening/Recording section. They are
controlled by the tabs in the centre of the
screen. They are listen, compare and practise.

* Click the listen tab to listen to the sample

files provided.

* Click the practise tab to record your attempt

to match the native speakers pronunciation.

* Click the compare tab to listen to the native

speakers voice in synchronisation with your

own attempt.

16

LOTE Lab starts up with the listen tab active.

Select a unit from the drop-down menu. You
will see a list of available audio files for that
unit. Select a file.

TR
TR
home
home

Click the green Play button to

hear the audio. The corresponding
text highlights as the words are
spoken. The space bar can be used
instead of the green play button.

Click the practise tab.

17

Choose the microphone input

from the list in the box below the
play button. Each system
will show different things in this
box. You may have to configure the input
correctly for your system. Consult your system
documentation if none of the inputs work
as is.
Click on the red Record button, below left
of the screen. The system begins recording.
Adjust the distance from your microphone
and the volume of your voice to cause the
recording level bar to peak at about three
quarters of the way up.
When you have finished
recording, click on the red
Record button again.

TR
TR
home
home

Click the compare tab.

Click on the green Play button. Observe

how successfully you have imitated the native
speaker.

Drag the play-head (by one of the red triangles

at its top or bottom) for the native speakers
example so that it is sitting just before the
beginning of the wave form. Then do this for
your practise attempt. This synchronises the
playback.

18

Using the Recording Studio tab

The Recording Studio allows users to record

any length of audio into six separate scratch
areas and then permanently save the file/s to
their hard drive as wav format file/s. There are
six scratch locations (Recording 16). You can
use the save as... command and save them to
a location of your choice on your hard drive.

Recording follows the same procedure detailed

for the previous tab. Before you begin, click
on a button beside one of the scratch areas
(Recording 16) to temporarily store your
recording.

TR
TR

home

19

Using the Beat Box tab

The Beat Box allows the user to build a beat

track that can be used as a backing track
for an original song. Four different beat
compositions can be saved under four scratch
locations (buttons 14). The user can add
their own voice to the backing track and
record the result. The resulting file can be
saved to the users hard drive.

When the user selects the Beat Box tab, four

pre-loaded beats are available. Click a button
(14) and then click the green Play button at
the top of the window. The beat will cycle
and should be audible through the speakers.
Click the same button again to stop the
playback.

20

Compose your own beats by selecting a

sample sound from one of the seven
drop-down lists. There are many to choose
from. Once the sound you want is displaying
in the list, click on the dark stage area, in one
of the 16 boxes adjacent to your sound. The
box will highlight.

TR
TR
home
home

21

The highlighted boxes represent the timing

of each sound heard after the Play button
is pressed. Experiment with their positions
to achieve a pleasing result. Click the red
save button to save the beat under the active
number button.
To record your song, click on the Play button,
below left of the screen. You should hear the
beat played back through your speakers. Place
the microphone between the speakers and
yourself so it is within range of both your
voice and the beat from the speakers. You can
adjust the speaker volume, your own volume
and/or the position of the microphone to
achieve the desired balance. Click the red

Record button. Sing your song. Click the

Record button again when you have finished.
You can play back the result. When you are
satisfied, click the save as... button to save the
file to your hard drive.

Tips and Tricks

Advanced users can add their own samples to

the beat_samples folder in the LOTELab
folder. These will appear next time you load
the Beat Box tab. Keep them short and sharp.
They must be in the wav file format. You can
also record short samples of audio under the
Recording Studio tab and save them into
the beat_samples folder. There is a text file
called presets.txt in this folder. Do not edit or
delete it. Do not remove or rename the set of
samples that ship with LOTE Lab.

Advanced users can also add their own audio

files to the native speaker samples under the
Sample Listening/Recording tab. They must
be wav format files. 44.1 16 bit stereo is
recommended but not essential. It is crucial
that the file names are prefixed with Unit_xx
where xx is the 2 digit number of the unit.
If you wish for additional speech samples to
appear in Unit 2, for example, prefix your file
with Unit_02. If you type the spoken words
into a text file and save it with the same name
(with a .txt extension instead of .wav),

TR
TR
home
home

it will appear in the box below the waveform.

Both these files must be saved into the audio_
examples folder in the LOTELab folder.
You can then easily program the highlighting
of the text to follow the speakers words. To
program the text highlighting, activate the
track you wish to program by selecting it in
the list. Next, click on the program button.
The system enters program mode. Move the
play-head to the beginning of the first word.
Click on the first word in the text display. The
word goes green showing that it has had a

timing associated with it. Move the play-head

to the start of the next word and then click the
word in the text display. When all the words
are green, click on the program button again
to exit programming mode. Play the track
and observe your word highlighting. If you
wish to tweak a timing, enter programming
mode again, reposition the play-head and
click the word again in the text display. Exit
programming mode and play the track again to
view the result.
