Whiletheyhavelivedforcenturiesonrainandwellwater,todaythepeopleofAitBaamrane,ontheedgeoftheSaharaDesert,relyonly
sporadicallyonthisgroundwaterbecauseitisnolongerbeingreplenishedduetointensedroughts.Thisismakinglifeinthisregion
increasinglydifficult.
DarSiHmad,awomenledNGOinMorocco,designedandinstalledwhatisnowtheworldslargestoperationalfogwaterharvesting
system.Itisaninnovativesolutiontopersistentwaterstresswherefogisabundant,atechniqueinspiredfromancientwaterpractices.
TheDarSiHmadprojectprovidesaccessiblepotablewatertomorethan400peopleinfivevillages,mostofthemwomenandchildren.
Theuniquefogharvestingprojectisasuccessfulmodelofalocallydriven,participatoryclimatechangeadaptationinitiative,providingan
environmentallyfriendlywatersourcetocombattheeffectsofdesertification.

ThevillagesofAitBaamraneinSouthwestMorocco,wheretheDarSiHmad(DSH)projectislocated,layontheedgeoftheencroaching
SaharaDesert.Despitethousandsofyearsofcontinuedinhabitanceandresilience,theimpactsofclimatechangehavebecomeamajor
stressoroncommunities.
Climatechangeinduceddroughtspushmentomigratetourbancentersinsearchofwork,andwomenandchildrennowmakeupthe
majorityofthedwindlingpermanentresidentsinvillages.Priortothefogcollectionproject,mostwomenspent3+hours/dayretrievingwater
fromdistant,depletedwells,whichseriouslyconstrainedtheirlives.

For10years,DSHswomenledteamhasconductedresearchandleddevelopmentinitiativesintheregion,inclosecollaborationwith
variouslocalandinternationalwomen(includingengineers,humanists,researchers,scientists),todeterminethefeasibilityofharvesting
waterfromfog.
Fogharvesting,fogcatching,andfogmilkingareallnamesforalongestablishedandprovenscientifictechniquecalledfogcollection.This
techniqueusesspecializedmesh,hungbetweentwopoles,totrapthewaterdropletsinfog.Thewindpushesfogthroughthemesh,where
dropletsaretrapped,condense,fall,andamassinacontainerplacedatthebaseoftheunit.Dropbydrop,theyconstituteasubstantial
amountofwater.
Onceinfrastructurewasinstalledtocollectanddistributefogwater,femalevillagerswereequippedwithmobilephonesandtrainedtoreport
onthefogwatersystem,maintainingtheirancestralroleasmanagersofwaterresources.Whentheprojectwasfirstlaunched,DSHandits
partnerprovidedmonthlyfunctionalliteracyandincomegenerationtrainingtoensurethattimesavedbyinhomewateraccessisinvestedin
futuregenerationsoffemaleleaders.
Sixhundredsquaremetersoffogtrappingnetscurrentlycaptureanaverageof6,300litersofwater/day,morethanenoughtoservice400
residents.Therearemanymorevillagesthatneedpotablewater,soDSHwillshortly(January2017)installnextgenerationCloudFishernets
whicharecapableofdoublingfogwaterproductionoverthesamenetsurface.Overthenext18monthsDSHwillinstall20CloudFishernets
attheprojectsite,makingitthefirstintheworldtoutilizethisnewlydevelopedfogcollectiontechnology.
MoroccanDerhemHolding,USAIDandMunichRearethemajorfinancialsupportersofDSHsfogproject.Otherinstitutionsthathave
partneredwiththeprojectincludetheClimatologyDepartmentatUniversityoflaLagunainSpain,TataEnergy,MunichReFoundation,the
WasserStiftungteam,WPI,andTifawinInstitute,Colorado.

Helpingtheplanet
ThefogwaterpassesthroughUVFiltering,sandandcartridgefilters.Allthisequipmentispoweredby6solarpanelsandoperatedoutof
DSHsFogObservatoryCenter,whichisafullyintegratedrockbuiltecologicalcenteroperatingwithfogwater,2solarpanelsforelectricity,
andatraditionalscepticmodeltoilet.Thefogwaterdoesnotneedtobetreatedasitispurewater,freefromcontaminantsandpollutants.

Helpingpeople
Thepilotprojectisservicing5villageslocatedintheprovincesofTnineAmellou,QaidatMesti,andSidiIfni,SouthwestMorocco.Theyear
roundresidentpopulationisabout400individuals,includingapproximately40largehouseholds.Inthesummerwhenvillagesarefully
occupied,theprojectservicesatotalof92largehouseholds,inadditiontothelivestockintheregion.
BasedonpreviousstudiesbyDSHevaluatingtheimpactofwaterbeingdeliveredtoruralhouseholds,womenandgirlsfeelempowered
andthereislessdegradationofthenaturalenvironmentandfewerwaterbornediseases,especiallyamongchildrenasmothershave
testifiedthroughourongoingevaluationoftheproject.

Spillovereffect
TenyearsofappliedresearchandfeasibilitystudiesconductedbyDarSiHmadconfirmsthatharvestingpotablewaterfromfogcanbe
successfullyexpandedtomultiplesurroundinghillsides,providingcleanwatertoanextendednetworkofruralBerbervillagesthatsufferfrom
waterstressduetopersistentclimatechangeinduceddroughts.
DSHiscurrentlyhelpingbuildtwonewprojectsinotherregionsofSouthwesternMoroccoattherequestoflocalorganizations.Itplanson
creatingaFogWaterNetworkasitteachesandtransfersknowledgeandasnewlocalassociationscalluponittohelpbuildnewinitiatives.
InMarch2016,inPartnershipwithWasserstiftung,fundinghasbeenawardedbytheGermanMinistryofEconomicCooperationand
Developmenttoreplacethecurrentinfrastructurewithnetsthatwillenhancefogcollectioncapacitytwofoldoverthesamesurfaceareaof
nettingatthecurrentprojectsite.Overthenexttwoyears,DSHwillexpandthefogcollectionprojectto8newvillages,providingaccessto
potablewaterto500+newbeneficiaries.
