UNEP YEAR BOOK 2008

This publication (formerly the GEO Year Book) is the fifth annual report
on the changing environment produced in collaboration with many
world environmental experts. The UNEP Year Book 2008 highlights the
increasing complexity and interconnections of climate change, ecosystem
integrity, human well-being, and economic development. It examines
the emergence and influence of economic mechanisms and market driven
approaches for addressing environmental degradation, and it describes
recent research findings and policy decisions that affect our awareness
of and response to changes in our global climate and environment. Also

technocrats, dancers to diplomats, farmers to national governments. Trees
are more significant than many of us might imagine. They commemorate
births and lives lived, they beautify slums, farms and grand avenues, they
provide shade, oxygen, and delight. They cool the Earth. Also available in

environment has led to documentation and quantification of the changes
taking place. Through a combination of ground photographs, current and
historical satellite images, and narrative based on extensive scientific
evidence, this publication illustrates how humans have altered their
surroundings and continue to make observable and measurable changes
to Africa and its environment. The Atlas covers change in each of
Africas 53 countries, with reports on their progress toward the United
Nations Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 7: Ensure environmental
sustainability. Also available in French, ISBN: 9789280729016

is published 20 years after the landmark World Commission on Sustainable
Development report - Our Common Future. Environment for Development is
the GEO-4 underlying theme and the report pays special attention to the
role and impact of the environment on human well-being as well as to the
use of environmental valuation as a tool for decision-making. Also available

Africas Lakes: Atlas of Our Changing Environment

The dramatic and, in some cases, damaging environmental changes
sweeping Africas lakes are brought into sharp focus in this atlas. The
Atlas of African Lakes compares and contrasts spectacular satellite images
of the past few decades with contemporary ones. It covers the rapid
shrinking of Lake Songor in Ghana, partly as a result of intensive salt
production, and the extraordinary changes in the Zambezi river system as
a result of the building of the Cabora Basa dam site, beside more familiar
images of the near 90 per cent shrinkage of Lake Chad. Other impacts,
some natural and some human-made, include the extensive deforestation
around Lake Nakuru in Kenya. Satellite measurements, detailing the falling
water levels of Lake Victoria are also mapped. Africas largest freshwater
lake is now about a meter lower than it was in the early 1990s.

This new rapid response report has, for the first time, mapped the
multiple and combined impacts of pollution; alien infestations; overexploitation and climate change on the seas and oceans. The worst
concentration of cumulative impacts of climate change with existing
pressures of over-harvest, bottom trawling, invasive species , coastal
development and pollution appear to be concentrated in 10-15 per cent
of the oceans concurrent with todays most important fishing grounds
says the report.

This report was produced in close collaboration with scientists and
experts under HERMES (Hotspot Ecosystem Research on the Margins
of European Seas), a large, interdisciplinary deep-sea research project
supported by the European Commissions Framework Six Programme.
The aim of HERMES is to understand better the biodiversity, structure,
function and dynamics of ecosystems along Europes deep-ocean margin,
in order that appropriate and sustainable management strategies can
be developed based on scientific knowledge. UNEP joined HERMES as a

Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in the Tourism Sector

Frameworks, Tools and Practices
With its close connections to the environment and climate itself, tourism
is considered to be a vulnerable and highly climate-sensitive economic
sector, similar to agriculture, insurance, energy and transportation.
In 2005, tourisms contribution to GHG emissions was estimated to
be approximately 5%. In response to this challenge this publication
is designed to provide a provide pragmatic platform to strengthen the
capacity of professionals to understand and respond effectively to the
global challenges of climate change in tourism destinations.

opportunities to reduce these emissions has become a priority in
the global effort to reduce climate change. Buildings and Climate
Change provides an overview of current knowledge about greenhouse
gas emissions from buildings, and presents opportunities for their
minimisation. Examples of policies and tools applied in different
countries to improve energy efficiency in buildings are presented, as are

Tourism and Mountains: A practical guide to managing the social and

environmental impacts of mountain tours
Travel to mountain ecosystems is increasing at a rapid pace, as growing
numbers of tourists are attracted to the clean air, unique landscapes and
wildlife, scenic beauty, culture, history, and recreational opportunities
that mountain destinations offer. While this growth provides important
benefits to local communities and national economies, the very
popularity of mountain areas also poses a potential threat to the
health of their natural and cultural resources. Mountains, which make
up nearly a quarter of all land area on Earth and are home to at least
12 per cent of the worlds human population, contain a wide variety of
habitats, many of which have extremely high levels of unique and rich
biodiversity. Also available in French, ISBN: 9789280728545 Spanish:

Marine litter in the Northwest Pacific Region

Marine litter/solid waste is becoming a significant contributor to
marine pollution in all oceans. Many types of marine litter persist for
hundreds of years, and volumes are accumulating; synthetic/plastic
litter particularly damages ecological, economic, cultural, recreational
and aesthetic values of coastal and marine ecosystems and their
components. UNEP, through the Global Programme for Action and the
Regional Seas Programme is active in raising awareness about the marine
litter problem; one of its activities has been to commission a series of
reports on the assessment of the marine litter problem, this particular
publication concentrates on the North West Pacific.
