Statement of Purpose.
We see this competition, as an opportunity to rediscover Angolan architecture and equally the chance to unveil current human settlements.
The urban slums have often been detached from the architecture practice.
In that sense we questioned our role as aesthetic drafters and reposition ourselves more as thoughtful observers, gathering all relevant information in a plan
and managing the project a posteriori.
We are interested in generating other ways of working and in generating new ideas for eventual projects.
Therefore we propose to design a fexible system, rather then the traditional approach to architecture projects.
The slum dweller takes an active role in the process of building his own house.
What is Angolan identity?
The 30 years civil war accelerated the rural exodus to Luanda.
The lack of infrastructures resulted in the invention of survival strategies.
Angolan are resourceful, spending their day selling what they can, buying and storing brick by brick until they have enough to build their own house.
We could say that the Angolan subsistence economy and the total inexistence of new houses,
created the urban slums.
According to the UN -habitat estimation from 2003, between 81-100 % of the houses in Angola are slums, one of the highest in Africa.
How to incorporate the Angolan reality in our design proposal?
There is an insuf ciency of information concerning Angolan history and traditions, due to the war.
We propose to return to ancient African architecture, textiles, scripts, art, and music references, to identify certain common denominators.
One signifcant denominator is the fractal quality present in African architecture, a unique characteristic observed by several ethno-mathematicians.
The ability to observe and reproduce patterns, both numeral and geometrical, is of great importance in Africa, and is still very much embedded in all their art
manifestations.
How to build a sustainable low budget house in a slum?
To introduce these qualities in our design, we took the single house repetition to determine diferent neighborhood blocks generating a fabric pattern
cityscape.
Each unit is designed to provide its inhabitant with the bare necessities and the means of subsistence.
We propose as house extension a frontage shaded space that can be used for a small shop or a small business.
This double front face is turned to the street simultaneously working as a sun bufer for the house private sphere.
The house common spaces (patio, kitchen, living room) are central, where the family gathers and parties.
The patio walls are higher to assure the house cooling. We propose to build an integrated shading system.
All the house materials are sourced locally. The use of concrete is minimized to structural elements.
We elected the earth brick for the house masonry, because it’s a sustainable technology, and a fexible system of self-construction.
The design allows a choice between earth brick, which requires patient labor, and cement brick, well-known technology that permits a faster construction,
depending on the know-how of the inhabitant to build.
The tin roof is recyclable and very common in Angola. It collects rainwater for the garden and toilet.
Ultimately, by building one’s own house, the inhabitant might create a job for himself, which is the ultimate social sustainability strategy.
