Friends of 10 Lesson Plan

AusVels
Understanding that numbers are said in a particular order and there are patterns in the way we say them
Understanding and using terms such as first and second to indicate ordinal position in a sequence.
Understanding that each object must be counted only once, that the arrangement of objects does not
affect how many there are, and that the last number counted answers the how many question
Use a range of practical strategies for adding small groups of numbers
Learning Focus: To strengthen addition skills and be able to count onward. To recognise the larger number
Resources: Friends of 10 worksheet, whiteboard, dice
Time: (30mins) Lesson/introducing worksheet: approximately 20 minutes
Worksheet: approximately 10 minutes

Children to sit on carpet

Begin with 5 Ls
Re-enforce positive behaviour through praising other students

Middle
1. Today we will be doing an activity called Friends of 10- Does anyone have any ideas what they think
we will be learning today?
2. Write number 10 on the board- What number is this?
3. Ask what number combinations we could use to get to 10 (acknowledge children with hands up only).
Write these combination examples on the board
4. Select one child to pick one number under 10, and another child to pick the number that adds to make
10 (hands up only). Write these combination examples on the board
5. Put worksheet on the white board and model to children how to do activity
6. Explain it is to be done individually

Ask if children feel comfortable with the task

Children to then move to desks to complete worksheet
Developing students (Phyrne, Alisha, Sam W) to come to carpet to work with teacher
Assist where needed

Questions to consider
How to I cater to early finishers? How do I make it harder for stronger students?
Children who are more developed in this area or who finish early can have a go at writing out the sums (4 + 6 =
10), or try some more difficult sums or numbers.
How to make it accessible for developing students? (Phryne, Alisha, William, Sealtiel)
Bring students who are not as confident to the carpet to work with the educator or pair them with a more
confident student
How to make the lesson engaging throughout? Consider questions to ask

Reflection on Teaching

The lesson didnt go for long enough

Wasnt able to manage classroom as effectively as I would have liked once the children began the
worksheets
One student said they didnt want to do something, need to better be able to manage defiance
Wasnt able to provide an additional activity to children who finished early or who didnt find the
activity challenging enough
Alternately, there were too many children who did not have a clear grasp of the task for me to be able
to help effectively
I was happy with the way I introduced and modelled the lesson, just not as happy with how the activity
went

GOALS

1. To better be able to manage a whole class setting

2. To better be able to manage and plan for the time
3. To have a greater availability of strategies for early finishers and developing students
Next time

Have more strategies ready to better cater for wide range in abilities
Have more strategies for early finishers eg. adding additional dice
