PSP Tasks
Sarah divided a cookie into halves. She ate a fourth of her half. How much of the whole cookie
did she eat? Explain how you arrived at your answer.
Students can answer this with a picture drawing of a cookie that is divided into halves and then
half of that divided into fourths and the student will then have to see what fraction of that whole
cookie is what she ate.

Patty has five cookies and she wants to split them into six groups equally. How much of the
cookies will be in each group? Draw a picture to help you solve the problem.
Students will draw a whole, which will be 5 cookies. Then they will split each cookie into 6 parts
to find that of each cookie each group gets . So, of the whole amount of cookies, which is 5
cookies, each group will get 5 parts which is of the whole. (Look at picture for clarification.)
------------------------------ 5 cookies ----------------------------

Total = for each group of the whole amount of cookies.
