Report on Progress of Professional Portfolio

Competency Number: B-3 Planning Subcategory: B-3-3

DESCRIPTION OF
ONE SIGNIFICANT
LEARNING
EXPERIENCE IN THIS
COURSE

The most significant learning experience that I have had in the course
so far has been the development of the teaching plan in Assignment 1
of this program. I felt that it was an excellent application of both
critical thinking and also the application of knowledge from texts
through applying techniques on prioritizing, client needs, values and
expectations.

WHAT I LEARNED

I learned how to differentiate priorities and that through formative

evaluation of a client, prioritizing can rearrange as knowledge gaps are
discovered, and that it does not follow a linear path. Client needs can
be identified through comprehensive and complete assessments and
through clustering data needs can be more quickly identified. Also
through the transcultural assessment tool values that may have been
over looked can be identified and addressed, and lastly through setting
goals collectively both client expectations and practioner expectations
can be identified. This is important because it ensures a holistic
approach to a clients needs as well as a complete view of many
different aspects of a client.

PROFICIENCY
RATING

Good- I feel that I have reached a proficiency level of good through my

development of my nurse planning knowledge based on text readings
as well as through course assignments in this program. This was
achieved mainly through the Teaching Plan assignment. This allowed
me to take my knowledge base and apply it to a scenario and work
through gathering and assessing information pertinent to the teaching
plan and to incorporate my client into the development of a plan that
met both the clients needs as well as prioritized care and identifying
and overcoming any client learning barriers. I expect to reach a
proficiency level of excellence after further practice of developing
teaching plans as well as having an opportunity to interact with a client
that has different cultural values then my own. I have not had the
opportunity to apply my knowledge in this area as of yet so felt the
rating of good was appropriate at this stage in my nursing education. I
feel upon graduation I will have met the excellence level after more
patient exposure.

WHY IT WAS
MEANINGFUL /
SIGNIFICANT

This was significant because it opened up an entirely new form of

assessment and that the nursing process can be applied in problem
solving, teaching plans, and many other aspects of nursing and does not
have to be solely focused on a clients signs and symptoms as it relates
to a disease or condition. It is also meaningful because once you have a
strong understanding of the nursing process you can apply it to every
other aspect of nursing assessment that is encountered in both the
working field and also in personal day to day life.

HOW I WILL APPLY

THIS LEARNING IN
NURSING PRACTICE

The knowledge I have gained from prioritizing will aid me in working

under stressful life threatening situations and will help to identify
immediate patient needs. The tools I have gathered for assessing
clients cultural background will ensure I am aware and sensitive to
clients values. I can also apply what I have learned in regards to
identifying clients needs through proper assessment techniques and
critical thinking skills for clustering data. The understanding of
planning has many implications for both the emergent and nonemergent areas of nursing and I feel I will be able to successfully apply
this knowledge in my nursing practice.
