Gene Expression Checklist

AS91157- Demonstrate understanding of gene expression

In order to achieve Excellence in this standard you are required to: Demonstrate
comprehensive understanding which involves linking biological ideas and
processes about gene expression. The explanation may involve justifying,
relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing.
This checklist is designed for you to use when you are studying this standard.
Tick the boxes as you go to establish which concepts you know and which you
may need to revise.

Unit 1: Protein Structure and Function

By the end of this unit you should be able to:
Describe the structure and shape of different proteins
Describe the four different levels of protein structure.
Discuss protein structure in relation to enzymes

Unit 2: Protein Synthesis

By the end of this unit you should be able to:
Identify where in the cell protein synthesis takes place
List some of the differences between DNA and RNA
List the three different forms of RNA and describe their function in
protein synthesis
List the three different regions of a gene
Identify where transcription takes place in a cell
Distinguish between the terms triplet and codon
Describe what takes place during transcription
Define the term exon and intron.
Identify where translation takes place in a cell
Describe what takes place during transcription
Define the term redundancy and explain it using an example (given an
amino acid table).

Unit 3: Mutations and Mutagens

By the end of this unit you should be able to:
Describe the difference between gene and chromosomal mutations
(note: only gene mutations are assessed in this standard)
Define the term mutagen
Give examples of mutagens and the type of mutations they can cause
Discuss the outcome and effects of base insertions and deletions
Discuss the different outcomes that can occur as a result of base
substitutions
Discuss how mutations can affect the phenotype of an individual

Unit 4: Metabolic Pathways and Phenotype

By the end of this unit you should be able to:

Describe what happens in a metabolic pathway
Discuss how mutations effect metabolic pathways and the outcomes of
these pathways.
Discuss how phenotype is influenced by both environmental effects and
genetics with reference to a named example e.g. human skin colour
