Study Guide for Mid Module 2 Assessment

Name_________________#_____

Answer Key

1. Write written expressions as numerical expressions and find the value. (Lesson
3)
Examples:
Written Expression
Numerical Expression Evaluate
40 times the sum of 47 and 23 = 40 x (47 + 23) = 40 x (70) = 2800
Fill in the chart.
The product of 25 and 2 minus the
product of 3 and 10

(25 x 2) (3 x 10)

50 30 = 20

Divide the difference between (1600 400) 12

1,600 and 400 by 12

1,200 12 = 100

The sum of 480 and 320

multiplied by 13.

800 x 13 = 10,400

(480 +320) x 13

2. Compare two expressions using >, <, or =. Explain how you can determine each
answer without calculating. (Lesson 3)
Examples:
81 x 9

>

60 nines 4 nines

I know 81 x 9 > 60 nines 4 nines because 60 nines 4 nines means 60 x 9 4 x

9 and that is the same as (60 4) x 9. Since 60 4 is less than 80, the answer
must be less than 80 x 9.

7 x 100 < 25 x ( 4 x 9)
7 x 100 is < than 25 x (4 x 9) because
25 x (4 x 9) = (25 x 4) x 9 and
25 x 4 = 100 so, 7 x 100 < 100 x 9 because 7 < 9

28 x 18 = 9 twenty-eights, doubled
28 x 18 =
9 x 28 x 2= 9 x2 x 28 = 18 x 28

3. Solve related multiplication problems and explain how the problems are related
using words, numbers, or pictures. (Lesson 10)
Examples:
a. 15 x 30 = 450
b. 1.5 x 30 = 15 tenths x 30 = 450 tenths = 45.0
Possible explanation: (The digits in both problems are exactly the same. The
difference is that the first problem the units are larger than in the second. The
answer or product to the second problem must be 1/10 of the product of the first
problem.)
4. Multiply using the standard algorithm. (Lesson 8)
Examples:
617 x 28 = 17,276

304 x 782= 237,728

Students must show the steps in a standard algorithm!

5. Solve multistep word problems. (Lesson 11)
Example: Mrs. Loyd decided to treat her awesome math students for their
excellent work in class. She bought them lunch at Taco Bell. She bought 15
Crunchy Tacos Supreme for $1.59 each and 16 Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos
Supreme for $1.79 each. How much did Mrs. Loyd spend in all?
$1.59 x 15 = $23.85 for 15 CTSs
$23.85 + $28.64 = $52.49

$1.79 x 16 = $28.64 for 16 CRDLTs

Mrs. Loyd spent $52.49 for all the tacos.

6. Solve multistep word problems involving conversions. (Lesson 15)

Example: To practice for an ironman competition, John swam 0.86 kilometer each
day for 3 weeks. How many meters did he swim in those 3 weeks.
3 weeks = 7 days x 3 = 21 days
0.86km x 21= 18.06 km
18.06km = 18.06 x 1 km
= 18.06 x 1000 m
= 18,060 meters

***1km = 1000 meters

John swam 18,060 meters in 3 weeks.
