ThefollowinginformationisapplicabletoallfireresistivedesignsdescribedinthisDirectory.Itisrecommendedthattheusersreviewthis
informationinadditiontothegeneralguidelinesprovidedforspecificmaterialsandconstructiontypes.
AuthoritiesHavingJurisdictionshouldbeconsultedbeforeconstruction.
Fireresistanceratingsapplyonlytoassembliesintheirentirety.Exceptforthoseseparatelyratedstructuralmemberssupportingtested
assemblies,individualcomponentsarenotassignedafireresistanceratingandarenotintendedtobeinterchangedbetweenassembliesbut
ratheraredesignatedforuseinaspecificdesigninorderthattheratingsofthedesignmaybeachieved.Unlessotherwisespecifiedinthe
individualdesignorcertification,attachmentstostructuralsteelhavenotbeeninvestigated.
Allratingsarebasedontheassumptionthatthestabilityofthestructuralmemberssupportingtheassemblyarenotimpairedbytheeffectsof
fire.Theextentofdamageofthetestassemblyattheratingtimeisnotacriteriafortherating.
Thespecificationsformaterialsinanassemblyareimportantdetailsinthedevelopmentoffireresistanceratings.Thosematerialsprovided
withan"*"inthedesigntextareeligibletobeproducedundertheFollowUpServiceProgramofUL.Informationidentifyingsuchmaterials
andthecertifiedcompaniesauthorizedtoprovidethematerialsarelocatedintheproductcategorysectionofthisDirectory.Theappearanceof
theULCertificationMarkontheproductistheonlymethodprovidedbyULtoidentifyproductsthathavebeenproducedunderitsFollowUp
Service.
1.MetricDimensions
Itisrecommendedthatthe"MetricGuideforFederalConstruction,"publishedbytheNationalInstituteofBuildingSciences(NIBS),be
consultedforguidanceregardingtheuseofmetricdimensionedbuildingmaterials.Thedimensionalconversionofbuildingmaterialsfromthe
inchpoundsystemtometricmayeitherbehardorsoft.
Hardconversionsaretypicallyappliedtomanufacturedproductsusedinmodularconstruction.Theseproductsincludesuspendedceiling
systems,gypsumwallboard,insulationboards,etc.Certifiedproductswhichareavailableinmetricsizesareidentifiedinthecertification
informationfortheindividualproductcategorieslocatedneartheendofthisDirectory.
Forsoftconversions,inchpounddimensionsaremathematicallyconvertedtoexactequivalentmetricvalues.Examplesofdimensionswhich
maybesoftconvertedincludeconcretethickness,depthofconcealedspaceabovesuspendedceilings,andcoatingthicknesses.
Itisrecommendedthatdimensionswhichareidentifiedasminimumormaximuminfireresistivedesignsbeinitiallysoftconvertedand,if
required,furtherconvertedtoahardmetricequivalentfollowingthemin/maxguidance.Thespacingofhangerwireandothersupportsfor
suspendedceilingswouldbeexamplesrequiringthistypeofconsideration.
2.LoadingofTestSpecimens

ANSI/UL263requirestheloadappliedtotestsamplestobebaseduponthelimitingconditionsofdesignasdeterminedbynationally
recognizedstructuraldesigncriteria.Forsomeapplications,thenationallyrecognizedstructuraldesigncriteriamaybebasedupontheAllowable
StressDesign(ASD)ortheLoadandResistanceFactorDesign(LRFD)Method.Forapplicationswherethesetwodesignmethodsareavailable,
theloadappliedtothetestsamplewasdeterminedinaccordancewiththeAllowableStressDesignMethodunlesstheratedassembly
specificallyreferencestheLoadandResistanceFactorDesignMethod.Also,unlessotherwisestated,theloadcapacityofsteelbeamsassumes
thebeamsarefabricatedfromA36steel.
ANSI/UL263permitssamplestobetestedwiththeappliedloadbeinglessthanthemaximumallowableloadasdeterminedbythelimiting
conditionsofanationallyrecognizedstructuraldesigncriteria.Theratingsforassembliesdeterminedfromtestswheretheappliedloadwas
lessthanallowedbythenationallyrecognizedstructuraldesigncriteriaareidentifiedas"RestrictedLoadCondition."Thepercentofthe
maximumload,thepercentofthemaximumstress,andthenationallyrecognizeddesigncriteriaisidentifiedinthetextdescribingthe
structuralelementofratedassemblieswitharestrictedloadcondition.Anexampleofthetextusedinanassemblywitharestrictedload
conditionandsteeljoistloadedto80%ofthemaximumallowableis:
Thedesignloadforthestructuralmemberdescribedinthisdesignshouldnot:(1)exceed80%ofthemaximumallowableload
specifiedin"CatalogofStandardSpecificationsandLoadTablesforSteelJoistsandSteelGirders,"publishedbytheSteelJoist
Institute,or(2)developatensilestressgreaterthan24ksi,whichis80%ofthemaximumallowabletensilestressof30ksi.

Somerestrictedloadconditionshaveresultedfromchangesinproductavailability.AnexampleisthesubstitutionofKSeriesjoistsforother
seriesjoistsasdescribedunderSectionIII,FLOORCEILINGSANDROOFCEILINGS,Item7,SteelJoists.
AssembliestestedwithlessthanthemaximumallowableloadthatwouldresultfromloadingcalculatedusingtheLoadandResistanceFactor
DesignMethodorpost2015AISCSpecificationcriteriaareidentifiedas"RestrictedLoadCondition."ThePercentLoadReductionand
correspondingLoadRestrictedFactorfortypicalassembliesnotedinTableIarebaseduponloadingcalculatedinaccordancewithpre2005
AISCASDSpecificationcriteriaascomparedtoloadingcalculatedinaccordancewith2005andlaterAISCSpecificationcriteriaintheUnited
States.Thecalculationswereperformedforassembliesrepresentingspansandmembersizesoftypicalfiretestassemblies.Theloadswere
calculatedassumingaspanof13ftforfloorsandroofsand10ftforwalls.Calculationsforwideflangedsteelbeamsassumealivetodead
loadratioof3:1.Aloadrestrictionneednotbeappliedforanunrestrainedconditionofanyhourlyratingnorappliedforarestrainedcondition
withahourlyratingof1hourorless.
SomefireresistivedesignsarespecifiedwithaRestrictedLoadCondition.WhenusingfireresistivedesignswithaRestrictedLoadCondition,
thefactoredresistanceofthestructuralmembersorcomponentsshouldbereducedbymultiplyingthefactoredresistancebytheLoad
RestrictedFactorspecifiedintheindividualfireresistivedesigns.
TheLoadRestrictedFactorshouldbeappliedtothefactoredresistanceofallstructuralmembersorcomponents,including,butnotlimitedto,
factoredmomentresistance(Mr ),factoredshearresistance(Vr ),factoredtensileresistance(Tr )andfactoredcompressiveresistance(Cr ).

materialstrengthpropertiesasafunctionoftemperature,shouldbeconsideredwhenselectingfireresistiveassemblieswithLoadRestricted
ratings.
Unlessstatedinadesign,itisrecommendedtheLoadRestrictedFactorsinTableIbeused.
AssembliesdevelopedfromtestswheretheloadappliedonthesamplewasbaseduponcalculationsinaccordancewiththeLoadandResistance
FactorDesignMethodareidentifiedintheindividualcertifications.Theseassembliesshouldnotbeconsidered"LoadRestricted."

3.Penetrations
Penetrationsthroughalloraportionofanassemblycansignificantlyaffecttherating.Firestopsystemsdevelopedtoprotectopeningscreated
bypenetrationitemsarecoveredunderThroughpenetrationFirestopSystems(XHEZ).
4.FinishRatings
Afinishratingisestablishedforassembliescontainingcombustible(wood)supports.Thefinishratingisdefinedasthetimeatwhichthewood
studorwoodjoistreachesanaveragetemperatureriseof250Foranindividualtemperatureriseof325Fasmeasuredontheplaneofthe
woodnearestthefire.Afinishratingisnotintendedtorepresentaratingforamembraneceiling.Therequirementsforfinishratingsarenot
includedinANSI/UL263.
5.NailsandScrews
NailsarespecifiedaccordingtoASTMF547,"StandardTerminologyofNailsforUsewithWoodandWoodBaseMaterials,"orASTMC514,
"StandardSpecificationforNailsfortheApplicationofGypsumBoard."Nailsusedtoattachgypsumboardtowoodframingshouldbecement
coatedboxnailsorcementcoatedcoolernailsunlessspecifiedotherwiseintheindividualdesigns.ScrewsmeetingASTMC1002,"Standard
SpecificationforSteelSelfPiercingTappingScrewsfortheApplicationofGypsumPanelProductsorMetalPlasterBasestoWoodStudsorSteel

6.InteriorandExteriorApplications
ThefireresistivedesignsandULcertifiedmaterialsareinvestigatedwiththeunderstandingthattheiruseislimitedtointeriorapplications
unlessotherwisespecifiedintheindividualdesignsorcertificationinformation(e.g.,structuralcolumns"InvestigatedforExteriorUse").Where
anexteriorapplicationofaULcertifieddesignisdesired,thelocalbuildingcodeandAuthorityHavingJurisdictionshouldbeconsultedto
ensurecompliancewithothercoderequirementsapplicabletoexterioruse.
7.ExposedInteriorFinishes
Thesurfaceflammabilityandsmokedevelopmentcharacteristicsofcertifiedmaterialsthatmaybeusedasexposedinteriorfinishesare
measuredbythetestmethodinANSI/UL723(ASTME84),"TestforSurfaceBurningCharacteristicsofBuildingMaterials."Theflamespread
indexofthesematerialsislessthan200andthesmokedevelopmentindexofthesematerialsislessthan450.Surfaceburningcertifications
arecontainedintheBuildingMaterialsDirectory.
8.RadiantHeatingCableandPanels
Theeffectoftheuseofelectricalradiantheatingcableorwireonthefireresistanceperformanceofassemblieshasnotbeeninvestigated.
Unlessotherwisespecifiedinthespecificdesign,theuseofelectricalradiantheatingpanelsinafireresistanceratedassemblyisnot
permitted.
9.CoatingMaterials
Coatingmaterialsincludeproductsidentifiedas:1)SprayappliedFireresistiveMaterialsand2)MasticandIntumescentCoatings.
Thetypeofmaterialisspecifiedineachdesign.Materialsthathavebeeninvestigatedforexteriorapplicationaresoindicatedintheindividual
designsandintheproductcategory.
Regulationsgoverningtheapplicationanduseofcoatingmaterialshavebeenpromulgatedbymanygovernmentalagencies.AuthoritiesHaving
Jurisdictionshouldbeconsultedforcurrentlocalrequirements.
Unlessspecificallydetailedintheindividualdesignsorintheproductcertificationinformation,theinteractionofdissimilarfireproofing
materialsonthesamestructuralelementorattheintersectionofstructuralmembers,andtheadherenceofoneproducttotheother,hasnot
beeninvestigatedunderfiretestconditions.
Unlessspecificallydetailedintheindividualdesignsorintheproductcertificationinformation,theimpactofgalvanizationappliedtostructural
steelmembershasnotbeeninvestigatedunderfiretestconditions.Galvanizationmayimpacttheadhesionofsprayappliedfireresistive
materialsormasticandintumescentcoatings.
SprayappliedFireresistiveMaterials
Thesurfacesonwhichthematerialistobeappliedmustbefreeofdirt,oilandloosescale.Surfacesmaybeprimedwiththeprimers/paints
coveredunderPrimersforStructuralSteel(CGJM).
Thefollowingmethodofdeterminingthebondstrengthofthesprayappliedmaterialsonlyappliestoprimersorpaintsthatarenotcovered
underCGJM.Unlessspecificallyprohibitedintheindividualdesigns,materialsidentifiedasSprayappliedFireresistiveMaterials(CHPX)may
beappliedtoprimedorsimilarlypaintedwideflangesteelshapesandpipeandtubeshapedcolumnsprovided:(A)thebeamflangewidth
doesnotexceed12in.(B)thecolumnflangewidthdoesnotexceed16in.(C)thebeamorcolumnwebdepth(definedasinsideoftop
flangetoinsideofbottomflange)doesnotexceed16in.(D)thepipeouterdiameterortubewidthdoesnotexceed12in.(E)bondtests
conductedinaccordancewithASTME736,"StandardTestMethodforCohesion/AdhesionofSprayedFireResistiveMaterialsAppliedto
StructuralMembers,"shouldindicateaminimumaveragebondstrengthof80%andaminimumindividualbondstrengthof50%when
comparedtothebondstrengthofthefireresistivecoatingasappliedtocleanuncoated1/8in.thicksteelplate.Theaverageandminimum
bondstrengthvaluesshouldbedeterminedbaseduponaminimumoffivebondtestsconductedinaccordancewithASTME736.
Thebondtestsneedonlybeconductedwhenthefireresistivecoatingisappliedtoaprimedorsimilarlypaintedsurfaceforwhichacceptable
bondstrengthperformancebetweentheprimerorothersimilarmaterialandthefireresistivecoatinghasnotbeenmeasured.Abondingagent
maybeappliedtotheprimedorsimilarlypaintedsurfacetoobtaintheminimumrequiredbondstrengthwherethebondstrengthsarefoundto

Wheremetallathstripsorsteelstudsanddisksareused,acceptablebondstrengthasdescribedinitem(E)shouldalsobeprovided.Abonding
agentmaybeappliedtothepaintedsurfacetoobtaintherequiredminimumbondstrengthwherebondstrengthstoapaintedsurfaceare
foundtobebelowminimumacceptablevalues.
Thedrydensityatwhichsprayedmaterialshouldbeappliedtobuildingelementsisspecifiedintheindividualdesigns.Drydensity
measurementsmaybedeterminedbyremovingatleast6in.sqsectionsrandomlyselectedfromthebuilding,subjectingthesamplesto120F
inanovenuntilconstantweightisobtained,followedbyaccurateweighing,measuringandcalculationofthedensityinlbpercuft.Constant

Thesprayappliedfireresistivematerialthicknessspecificationinadesignshouldbeconsideredtheminimumaveragethicknessofthe
individualthicknessreadingsmeasuredinaccordancewithASTME605,"StandardTestMethodsforThicknessandDensityofSprayedFire
ResistiveMaterialAppliedtoStructuralMembers."Whensprayappliedfireresistivematerialisappliedtometallath,thesprayappliedfire

identifiedasMasticandIntumescentCoatings(CDWZ)shouldbeconsultedforspecificrecommendationsregardingtheapplicationofthe
coatingoverprimedpaintedsurfaces.

Horizontallyappliedgypsumboardappliedisgypsumboardappliedwiththelongedgesperpendiculartotheframingmemberstowhichitis
attached.
Gypsumboardthicknessesspecifiedinspecificdesignsareminimums.Greaterthicknessesofgypsumboardarepermittedaslongasthe
fastenerlengthisincreasedtoprovidepenetrationintoframingthatisequaltoorgreaterthanthatachievedwiththespecifiedgypsumboard
thicknessandfasteners.

Theconcretecompressivestrengthspecifiedinthedesignsmaybereduced500psitoobtaintheminimumvalue.Themaximumcompressive
strengthisnotlimited.Thethicknessisaminimumunlessotherwiseindicated.
Theconcrete'sairdryunitweightisdeterminedinaccordancewithASTMC567,"StandardTestMethodforDeterminingDensityofStructural
LightweightConcrete."Theunitweightspecifications(unlessstatedasarangeforindividualdesigns)haveatoleranceofplusorminus3pcf.

(DesignsG0,G2,G4,G5,P0,P2,P4,P5).Indesignsthatspecifythesteelformunitstobeweldedtosupportswithwelding
washers,theweldingwashersmaybeomittedwhenthesteelformunitis22MSGgaugeorheavier.
Normally,assemblieswithsteeldeckareconstructedandtestedwithsimplespanconditions,however,theratingsalsoapplytocontinuousspan
conditions.
4.ElectricalBoxesforConcreteFloors
OutletBoxesandFittingsCertifiedforFireResistance(CEYY)coverspresetandpostsetinsertsforuseinconcretefloorsforelectricaland
communicationconnections.Thesedeviceshavedemonstratedanabilitytobeusedinspecificassemblieswithoutreducingtheirfireresistive
ratings.Inthosefloorceilingdesignswheretheinsertsarenotspecificallyshown,penetrationstotheconcretetoppingwithelectricalinserts
mayjeopardizetheratingunlesspropercompensatingprotectionisprovided.Intheabsenceofspecificinformationforinsertsintheindividual

designs,insertsthatdonotpenetratethroughtheentirefloorandbeartheULCertificationMarkforOutletBoxesandFittingsCertifiedforFire
Resistancemaybeusedinfloorceilingdesignswhichincludefireresistivecoatingmaterialsonbothflutedandcellularfloorunitsforthe
entirefloorspanbetweensupports.Thecellularunitsshouldbeprotectedinoneofthefollowingways:

Theaboverecommendedprotectionisintendedonlyforstructuralconcretefloorsthatcontainweldedwirefabricorfiberreinforcementwhen
permittedandconsistofablendofoneormoreflutedtoonecellularunit.Theentireundersideofthecellularunitsshouldbeprotectedwith
thesamematerialandthicknessasrequiredbelowthetrenchheaderswithagradualreductioninthicknesstothatspecifiedforflutedunitsin
theindividualdesigns.Thespacingbetweeninsertsshouldbesufficientforstructuralintegrity.Thediameterofanyholesintheinsertcoverfor
thepassageofwireshouldbenomorethan1/8in.largerthanthediameterofthewire.
5.NonmetallicOutletBoxesforCeilings
NonmetallicoutletboxesinvestigatedforinstallationinfloorceilingorroofceilingassembliesarecoveredunderOutletBoxesandFittings
CertifiedforFireResistance(CEYY).
6.MetallicElectricalOutletBoxes
Certifiedmetallicoutletboxeswithmetallicornonmetalliccoverplatesmaybeusedinfloorceilingandroofceilingassemblieswithratings

Thespecifiedminimumsizejoistinfloororroofceilingdesignsisthejoistthatmeetstherequirementsforboththeminimumdepthandthe
minimumweightperfoot.Joiststhatexceedthespecifiedminimumsizemaybeused,providedtheaccessoriesarecompatible.Thedimension
fromthebottomchordofjoiststotheceiling,whethergivenorcalculated,isaminimum.
Spacingbetweenjoistsmaybeincreasedfromthatspecifiedtoamaximumof4ftoncentersifthefloorslabmeetsstructuralrequirements
andthespacingofthehangerwiressupportingtheceilingisnotincreased.Whereitisnecessarytoprovidesupportfortheceilinghangerwires
betweenthejoists,thismaybeaccomplishedbyusing11/2in.,16gaugeorlargercoldrolledsteelchannels.Eachchannelwithitsweb
orientedverticallyshouldbeplacedontopofandperpendiculartothejoist'sbottomchordandtiedtheretowithadoublestrandof18SWG

Theareaofbridgingbarsoranglesspecifiedintheindividualdesignsisaminimum.Largerbridgingmaybenecessaryinordertomeetthe
structuraland/orcoderequirements.
Fordesignsrequiringapplicationofcoatingmaterialstosteeljoists,thebridgingbarsoranglesshouldbeprotectedwiththecoatingmaterial
thicknessrequiredonthejoistforaminimumdistanceof12in.beyondthejoist.
Whenthejoistsarecoatedwithafireresistivematerial,thecavities,ifany,betweentheupperflangeofthejoistandthesteelfloororroof
units,shouldbefilledwiththefireresistivecoatingmaterialappliedtothejoist,unlessspecifiedotherwiseintheindividualdesigns.
Fordesignsthatrequirethebottomchordsofthejoiststoconsistofroundbars,thesubstitutionofanglesofanequivalentareaisnot
recommended.
KSeriesjoists,LHSeriesjoistsandjoistgirdersspecifiedinfloororroofceilingassembliesshouldbedesignedandfabricatedinaccordance
withtheSteelJoistInstitute'sSpecificationsadoptedNovember4,1985,andrevisedMay1,2000.

materialsalongthesidesoftheprecastconcreteunits.Thisrequirementmaybewaivedandtheclearancespacesfilledwithsandcementgrout
ifthestiffnessofthebuildingfloorandsupportingcolumnsystemsurroundingtheprecastconcreteunitsdoesnotexceed80%ofthestiffness
ofthetestframeinwhichtheassembliesaretestedandrated.

Therelativestiffnessoftheframeworksurroundingabuildingfloorassemblymaybecalculatedusinganapproximatetestframesizeof14ft
by17ftandanapproximatestiffnessofframeof700,000kipin.and850,000kipin.,expressedbyEI/L,alongthe17ftand14ft
dimensions,respectively.
Forunrestrainedassemblyratings,clearancesshouldbeprovidedaroundtheendsandsidesoftheprecastconcreteunitssothattheymay
expandfreelyduringfireexposure.
Inmostfloorceilingdesigns,sandcementgroutisrequiredtobepouredbetweenadjacentprecastunits.Thisgroutmaybeomittedifa

performance.Spacingofthesupportsshouldnotexceedbutmaybelessthanspecified.Whenthelengthofthecrossteebetweenthemain
runnerandthewallmoldingis30in.orlonger,eachsuchcrossteeshouldbesupportedbyahangerwireatmidpointoftheteeoratalocation
nearerthewallunlessspecifieddifferentlyinthedesign.
Asanalternatetothewallmoldingspecifiedintheindividualdesigns,themoldingmaybeananglefabricatedfromminimum0.017in.thick
steel.Eachlegoftheangleshouldbeatleast7/8in.longwitha0.115in.hemmededge.Thewallmoldingshouldbereliablysecuredtothe
wallwithsteelfastenersonmaximum16in.centersunlessspecifiedotherwiseinadesign.
Crossteeswhichareparallelandadjacenttowallsandarespaced12in.orlessfromthewallshouldeachbesupportedbyahangerwireat
midpoint.Thesehangerwiresareintendedtominimizetheirrotationunderfireconditionsduetotheunbalancedweightofpanelsontheir
flanges.
Whereaceilingissupporteddirectlyfromstructuralmembers,itmaybeloweredandintermediatesupportsmaybeused,ifnecessary,
providedtheyproduceaninplacestiffnessequivalenttothatoftheoriginallytestedelements.Asuggestedmethodforprovidinganequivalent
inplacestiffnessisbyuseof11/2in.coldrolledchannelsmadeof16gaugeorheavierpaintedorgalvanizedsteel,withtheweboriented
verticallyandsuspendedfromthestructuralmembersby12SWGorheaviergalvanizedsteelwireatamaximumspacingof48in.OC.The
channelsmaybeorientedparallelorperpendiculartothestructuralmembersbutshouldbespacednotmorethanthespacingofthemembers.

Whereitisnecessarytocutawaytheexpansionmechanismofsuspensionmemberstofitroomdimensionsorcorridorwidths,themember
shouldbeinstalledwithagapofapproximately1/10in.perftoflengthtopermitfreethermalexpansion.
Hangerwiresshouldbeinstalledverticallyunlesspermittedotherwiseinadesign.
Somefloorceilingdesignswithstructuralconcretetoppingonsteelfloorunitsspecifytheuseofsteelhangerclipsasanattachmentprovision
forhangerwires.Asanalternatetohangerclips,lowvelocity,powderactuated,steeleyepinfastenersmaybeusedforhangerwire
attachmentinthefloorceilingdesigns.Thefastenersshouldhaveaminimum5/32in.diameterbyminimum7/8in.longpointedshankwitha
washerandnominal7/8in.longby7/16in.wideheadcontainingaroundedslotopening.Thefastenersareintendedtobesecuredtoconcrete
invalleysofflutedsteelfloorunitswithpowderchargessufficienttofullyembedtheshankportionwithoutshatteringtheconcrete.
12.FluorescentRecessedLuminaires(Troffers)
Luminairesmaybeinstalledindividuallyorendtoend(inrows).Sidebysideinstallationhasnotbeeninvestigated.
Thespacingofluminairesspecifiedintheindividualdesignsreferstothemaximumaggregateareaoftheluminairestobeusedineach100sq
ftofceiling.Unlessspecifiedotherwise,theluminairesareofthefluorescentlamptypewithsteelhousingandhardware.ULcertifiedLED
luminaireretrofitkits(seeLightemittingdiodeLuminaireRetrofitKits,IFAR)maybeusedtoreplaceorupgradethefluorescentfixturesto
energyefficientLEDfixtures,providedtheconversiondoesnotrequiretheexistingsteelhousingtoberemovedand/ormodified,andthe
fixtureprotection(enclosure)abovethesteelhousingisasdescribedintheindividualdesign.
Whereairhandlingtypeluminairesweretested,thedesignmaydescribetheluminaireasairhandlingorasprovidedwithslotsinthehousing.
However,sincenoairmovementwasemployedduringthetest,theratingsrequirethatairmovementbeeffectivelystoppedatthestartofa
fire.Airhandlingluminairesmaybeusedinanydesignthatspecifiesluminaires,provideditisnotnecessarytoaltertheenclosuresurrounding
theluminaireandthatprovisionsaremadeforeffectivelystoppingthemovementofairatthestartofafire.
Inceilingsemployinganexposedgridsuspensionsystem,whenhangerwireisrequiredatmidpointofthecrossteeoneachsideofluminaires,
thewireshouldbeinstalledwithapproximately1/8in.ofslacksuchthatitwillnotbepullingonthecrossteeatroomtemperatureconditions.
13.EnclosuresforFluorescentRecessedLuminaires(Troffers)
Enclosuresforluminairesshouldbespacedawayfromthetopoftheluminairehousingasshownintheindividualdesigns.Whenluminairesare
installedendtoend,oneendpieceoftheprotectionmaterialthatispartoftheenclosureshouldbeplacedontopoftheadjoiningtop
protectionpiecestocoverthegapatthejunctionoftheluminaires.Spacersplacedontopoftheluminairehousingtoprovideclearanceforthe
protectionmaterialshouldnotbelocateddirectlyoveroradjacenttoluminaireballasts.Installationisintendedtobeinconformancewith
ANSI/NFPA70,"NationalElectricalCode."Forlayinpanelceilings,asanalternatetothespacerscutfromceilingmaterialormineralwool
batts,piecesofceilingsuspensionsystemteesmaybeusedtomaintaintheclearancebetweentheprotectionmaterialandthetopofthe
luminaire.
14.LuminairesCertifiedforFireResistance

Floorceilingandroofceilingassembliesincludefireresistanceratingsforuseinbothrestrainedorunrestrainedconditions.Itisuptothe
designerandAuthorityHavingJurisdictiontodetermineifanassemblyisbeingusedinarestrainedorunrestrainedapplication,asrequiredby
thebuildingcodebeingenforced.UnrestrainedAssemblyratingsmaybeusedforfloorceilingsandroofceilingsdesignedforeitherrestrained

determinedbythesteeltemperaturesmeasuredduringthetestandthespanislimitedonlybythemanufacturer'sloadingtables.
RestraintConditions
Certificationsoffloorceilingandroofceilingassembliesandindividualbeamsincluderestrainedandunrestrainedratings.ANSI/UL263and,
specifically,AppendixC,providesgeneralinformationwithrespecttotheconceptoftheseclassifications.
AppendixCofANSI/UL263definesrestraintinbuildingsas:"Floorceilingandroofceilingassembliesandindividualbeamsinbuildingsshould
beconsideredrestrainedwhenthesurroundingorsupportingstructureiscapableofresistingsubstantialthermalexpansionthroughouttherange
ofanticipatedelevatedtemperatures.Constructionsnotcomplyingwiththisdefinitionareassumedtobefreetorotateandexpandandshould
bethereforeconsideredasunrestrained."
TherestrainedconditioninfiretestsisdefinedinAppendixCofANSI/UL263as:"oneinwhichexpansionatthesupportsofaloadcarrying
elementresultingfromtheeffectsofthefireisresistedbyforcesexternaltotheelement."Thisdefinitionmaynotbeappropriatefor
conditionsofrestraintinactualstructures.TheStandardrecognizesthattheexerciseofengineeringjudgementisrequiredtodeterminewhat
constitutes"substantialthermalexpansion"whendeterminingtheconditionsunderwhichtherestrainedorunrestrainedratingsshouldbeused.

Whenapplyingthepublishedrestrainedratings,itisrecognizedthattheindividualresponsibleforthedesignofthefireratedconstructionmay
ascertainthatadifferentdegreeofrestraintmaybeprovidedtothebuildingassemblyduringafireconditionthanwasprovidedtothetest
sampleduringthefiretest.Undertheseconditions,thedesignermayreviewtheConditionsofAcceptanceforrestrainedandunrestrained
assembliesandbeamsinANSI/UL263foradditionalguidancewhendeterminingwhetherrestrainedorunrestrainedratingsshouldbespecified.
16.AirDuctsandProtectionSystems
Fordesignsemployingmeansforthemovementofair,ANSI/NFPA90A,"InstallationofAirConditioningandVentilatingSystems,"or
appropriatemodelmechanismcodeshouldbeconsulted.
Unlessotherwisespecifiedbythedesign,theratingsweredevelopedbasedonfiretestsemployingnoairmovement.Theratings,therefore,
requirethatairmovementbeeffectivelystoppedatthestartofafire.
Unlessspecifiedotherwise,theminimumdistancebetweenthebottomoftheductandthetopofceilingmembraneshouldnotbelessthan4
in.whereagreaterminimumdistanceisspecified,itmaybereducedto4in.minimum.Forductsequippedwithhingedsheetsteeldampers
overductoutlets,unlessspecifiedotherwise,themaximumdistancebetweenthebottomoftheductandthetopoftheceilingshouldnot
exceed8in.Whencertifiedceilingdampersareused,nolimitisrequiredforthemaximumdistancebetweenthebottomoftheductandthe
topoftheceilingsincefiredampersareinstalledclosetothetopofceilingmembraneperinstallationinstructions.Wherehingedsheetsteel
dampersarespecified,theyshouldbeequippedwithspringcatchesandcorrosionresistanthinges.Dampersdesignedtoclosebygravityshould
beinstalledtocloseinthedirectionoftheairflow.Airdiffusersshouldbeofsteelandattachedtotheductoutletwithsteelsheetmetal
screws.Spacingofscrewsshouldbeatleastthreeequallyspacedforrounddiffusersand8in.OCmaxpersideforsquarediffusers,withno
lessthanoneoneachside.
Exceptwherenotedintheindividualdesigns,theairdiffusersusedinthetestassemblieswereofthesurfacemountedtypewhichalso
supportedthesurroundingacousticalmaterialbyaflangeatleast1in.wide.Theopeningintheceilingmembraneforattachmentofthe
diffusertotheductoutletshouldnotbemorethan1in.greaterthanthesizeoftheductoutlet.Layintypediffusersmaybeusedwhenthey
aredescribedintheindividualdesignsorinthecertificationinformationofCeilingAirDiffusers(BZZU)forindividualcompanies.
CertifiedCeilingDampers(CABS)maybeusedinlieuofthehingeddoortypedampersinthosedesignsthatemployairductswiththeduct
outletprotectedwithahingeddoortypedamper.Themaximumareaforindividualductoutletsandthetotalaggregateareaofductoutlets
pereach100sqftoftheceilingareaarespecifiedintheindividualdesignsandareapplicablewhenthehingeddoortypedamperisused.If
thecertifiedceilingdamperisalsoeligibleforuseinthedesign,thenthemaximumsizeoftheductoutletsforthecertifiedceilingdamper
wouldapply.Thesizeoftheductoutletsshouldbenolargerthanthemaximumsizeofthecertifiedceilingdamper.
Somedesignsspecifyasmalleraggregateductoutletareaforeach100sqftofceilingareathanthemaximumsizeofanindividualoutlet.In
thiscase,whenacertifiedceilingdamperisused,theallowableoutletareaper100sqftofceilingareashouldbeestablishedonthebasisof
halftheareaoftheindividualmaximumsize.
Whenadesignrequirestheuseofacoveringmaterialaroundtheductoutletand/orthehingeddoordamper,ceramicpaperoramaterial
havingequivalentthermalpropertiesoftheceramicpapershouldbeused.
Ductoutletsshouldbelocatedinthefieldofanacousticalpanelhowever,whereitisnecessarytocutamainrunnerorcrosstee,eachcut
endshouldbesupportedbyavertical12SWGhangerwire.A1/2in.clearanceshouldbemaintainedbetweentheductoutletandeachcutend
ofthemainrunnerorcrosstee.Theductoutletshouldbelocatedsothatnomorethanonemainrunnerorcrossteeiscutwhenpenetrating
theceilingmembrane.
Flexibleairductsmaybeusedwithcertifiedairterminalunitsdesignatedforuseindesigns.Theflexibleairductshouldbe6to8in.diameter,
Class0orClass1airconnectororairduct,bearingtheULCertificationMark.Forassemblieswithwoodjoists("L"Seriesdesigns),airducts
onlyshouldbeused.Theflexibleductshouldbesupported4to6ftOCwithsteelstrapsand/or12SWGsteelhangerwiresothatnoportionof
theflexibleductiswithin4in.ofthetopoftheceilingmembrane,exceptwhereconnectedtotheairterminalunit.
Thefollowingductoutletprotectionmaybeusedasalternatesystems.SystemAmayonlybeusedwhenitisspecifiedintheindividual
designs.SystemBmaybeusedinanydesignthatcontainsasteelductwiththeductoutletprotectedbyahingeddoordamper,forequalor
smalleroutletsize.Thesystemshavebeeninvestigatedfortheireffectivenessinretardingthetransferofheatintotheceilingspace,buttheir
abilitytoretardsmokeandothercombustionproductshasnotbeeninvestigated.

layerofgypsumwallboardisaddedtotheassembly.Thegypsumwallboardshouldbeofthesametypeasshownintheindividualdesigns.The
baselayerofwallboardshouldbeattachedwiththefastenertypeandspacingasdescribedinthedesign.Itisnotnecessarytotapethejoints

20.RoofInsulation
Roofinsulationshouldbecarefullycontrolledrelativetomanufacturer,typeandthicknessasspecified.Lessthanthespecifiedthicknesscould
resultinhighertemperaturesontheroofcovering,whileagreaterthicknessofinsulationcouldcauseearlierstructuralfailure.
Certifiedpolystyreneinsulation,withadensityof5pcforless,maybeplacedonconcretefloorsorstructuralconcreteroofswithoutreducing

gypsumboardshouldbebackedbythesametypestudsasspecifiedinthedesign.Alternatively,minimum25gaugesteelframingwitha
minimumattachmentfaceof11/4in.maybeusedforthebacking.Bothedgesofthegypsumboardformingthehorizontaljointshouldbe
attachedtothebackingwiththesamescrewsandspacingasspecifiedinthedesignfortheattachmentofthegypsumboardedges,then
finishedasspecifiedfortheverticaljoints.
Horizontalbuttjointsonoppositesidesofthestudsinsinglelayerapplicationsshouldbestaggeredaminimumof12in.unlessotherwise
statedintheindividualdesigns.Horizontalbuttjointsinadjacentlayersonthesamefaceoftheassemblyinmultiplelayerapplicationsshould
bestaggeredaminimumof12in.unlessotherwisestatedintheindividualdesigns.
1.WoodStudWalls
Wallsofcombustibleconstructionshouldbefireblockedbetweenfloors,betweenthetopstoryandtherooforattic,andatcertainintervals
laterallyinaccordancewiththeprovisionsoftheapplicablecodetopreventthefreepassageofflamesandhotgases.
ThehourlyfireratingsforloadbearingwoodstudwallstestedbeforeJanuary1,2009,werederivedwithasuperimposedloadappliedtothe
wallassemblyintendedtotheoreticallydevelopmaximumworkingstressesnotexceedingthedesignvaluespublishedintheSupplementtothe
1991Editionofthe"NationalDesignSpecification"forwoodwhenhorizontallybracedatmidheight.Whenhorizontalbracingisreferencedin
thedesignitismandatory,unlessotherwisestated.
ForfireresistivedesignsbasedupondatageneratedafterDecember31,2008,thesuperimposedloadappliedtothewallassemblywasderived
fromASTMD6513,"StandardPracticeforCalculatingtheSuperimposedLoadonWoodframeWallsforStandardFireResistanceTests,"and
includesareferencetotheeditionofthe"NationalDesignSpecification"usedtocalculatethedesignload,thedesignmethod,thelimiting
designfactor,andthepercentageofthedesignloadappliedtothetestsample.
Woodstudwallsmaycontainfireretardanttreatedstudsaswellasuntreatedwoodstuds.Theuseoffireretardanttreatedplywood(wood
structuralpanels)maybeusedindesignsthatcontainuseofuntreatedplywoodwhenallotherspecifiedattributesareequivalenttothewood
structuralpanelinthedesign.
2.SteelStuds
Thedimensionsandgaugeofsteelstudsareminimums.Thehourlyratingsapplywhenthesteelstudsareofaheaviergaugeand/orlarger
dimensionsthanspecifiedinadesign.Thesuperimposedloadofbearingswallsutilizingsteelstudsshouldbebasedonthecapacityofthe
studsasdeterminedbythe"NorthAmericanSpecificationandCommentaryfortheDesignofColdFormedSteelStructuralMembers"(2007).
Wherelateralsupportofstuds(bymeansofstraps,channelsorsimilarsteelmembers)isrequiredinthedesign,theloadsappliedtosteel
studsshouldbebasedonthesteelbraceddesign.Theloadsbasedonsheathingbracingshouldnotbeassumed,unlessotherwisestatedinthe
design.
Theloadsappliedtosteelstudshavingayieldstresshigherthanthestatedminimumshouldbebaseduponthespecifiedminimumyieldstress
statedinthedesign.
NonloadbearingsteelstudsareproducedinaccordancewithASTMC645,"StandardSpecificationforNonstructuralSteelFramingMembers."
InaccordancewithASTMC645,theminimumflangewidthshouldbe11/4in.andtheminimumreturnlipshouldbe3/16in.Studsarealso

producedwithsteelhavingaminimumyieldstrengthof33ksi.
3.MetalThickness
Unlessotherwiseindicatedintheindividualdesigns,thefollowingminimummetalthicknesstablesapplywhereametalgaugedesignationis
stated.MetalgaugesarenolongerreferencedinASTMStandards.Itisstillanindustrypracticetospecifysteelcomponentsbygauge.Because
manyofthedesignscontainedhereinrefertometalgauge,thefollowinginformationshouldbeusedasaguidewherefieldquestionsoccur.
ThetablesshownhereinshouldbeusedasareferenceandtheAuthorityHavingJurisdictionshouldbeconsultedifdiscrepanciesexistbetween

5.NonmetallicElectricalOutletBoxes
OutletBoxesandFittingsCertifiedforFireResistance(CEYY)includescertificationsfornonmetallicoutletandswitchboxesforuseinwallor
partitionassemblies.Theinformationprovidedforeachcertificationincludesthemodelnumbersforthecertifiedproducts,adescriptionofthe
ratedassemblies,thespacinglimitationsfortheboxesandtheinstallationdetails.Nonmetallicboxesshouldnotbeinstalledonoppositesides
ofwallsorpartitionsofstaggeredstudconstructionunlesscertifiedforuseinsuchconstructions.
6.MetallicElectricalOutletBoxes
Certifiedsingleanddoublegangmetallicoutletandswitchboxeswithmetallicornonmetalliccoverplatesmaybeusedinbearingand
nonbearingwoodstudandsteelstudwallswithratingsnotexceeding2h.Thesewallsshouldhavegypsumwallboardfacingssimilartothose
showninDesignNos.U301,U411andU425.Themetallicoutletorswitchboxesshouldbesecurelyfastenedtothestudsandtheopeninginthe
wallboardfacingshouldbecutsothattheclearancebetweentheboxandthewallboarddoesnotexceed1/8in.Thesurfaceareaofindividual
metallicoutletorswitchboxesshouldnotexceed16sqin.Theaggregatesurfaceareaoftheboxesshouldnotexceed100sqin.per100sqft
ofwallsurface.TheaggregatesurfaceareaoftheboxesmaybeexceededwhenWallopeningProtectiveMaterials(CLIV)areinstalled
accordingtotherequirementsoftheircertification.
Metallicboxeslocatedonoppositesidesofwallsorpartitionsshouldbeseparatedbyaminimumhorizontaldistanceof24in.Thisminimum

requirementsonlywiththeunderstandingthattheiruseisintendedforinteriorapplications.WhereanexteriorapplicationofaULcertifiedwall
orpartitiondesignisdesired,thelocalbuildingcodeandAuthorityHavingJurisdictionshouldbeconsultedtoensurecompliancewithothercode
requirementsapplicabletoexteriorwalls.
8.ConcreteMasonryUnits
Unlessotherwiseindicatedintheindividualdesigns,theallowablecompressivestressfortheconcretemasonryunitshavebeendetermined
fromtheempiricaldesignmethodformasonryfoundinthemodelcodes.Forassembliesthathavebeentestedatlessthan100%ofthe
allowablecompressivestress,thedesignstatesthemaximumallowablecompressivestressfortheassembly.
