One of the basic challenges of a citys history is the passion of trying to keep
alive values that are already diminishing. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpnar (Turkish
novelist) says Things we love change together with us, thus live as treasures of
our lives because they have changed. in his work called Five Cities as a man
of romance. Cities also change together with us enriching them in some ways,
and in others if we want to withhold to stories worth remembering as ours or
our own we must keep our streets as well as our memories as clean and neat
as possible.
anakkale (Gallipoli)s story is one as such. Even though a hundred years have
passed which translates to a century, the story of the anakkale Victory is always as fresh and touching as ever and every 18th of March is celebrated in the
same way at our hearts as warm and blessed as the blood running through the
veins of all our martyrs. Sava Karaka, grandson of Hafz Hilmi Cokun who
was wounded during the anakkale Wars by an exploding cannon ball from
his leg and arm, carried both his grandfathers story and traces of a nations
struggle to sunlight by diving deep into the Dardanelles and documenting the
wracked of the war. He filmed the British and French war guns and cannon
balls that left his grandfathers arm impaired. A pleasant interview awaits you
further in the pages of the magazine with Sava Karaka who turns his face
toward to the sea in search of history.
The city does not only offer displays on its century old shop windows that we
pass by every day They also add everyones and every eyes story who pass
by and look at them Yldz candy shop is one of them. Our editors have
researched the colors it adds to Beyolu since its establishment in 1926.
And there are also those who blend city life with the dream of a lifetime writing fiction as neat as knitting it. Every reader gets his worth from that story

lkeden dierine getiinde deien detaylar da grmemizi
salyor. Portekize baktmzda kaplarn evresindeki renk
ve desenler arpc bir fark yaratrken, ngilterede kaplarn
yanndaki trabzanlar binalarn da karakterini oluturan
bir e haline gelmi. Toplamda 128 fotorafn bulunduu

Architectural works of societies are values that reflect historical

culture and designing traditions. The more one observes the city
the more one would understand that architectural culture is not
only within historical and important buildings but in fact it is
all over the city scattered in all corners. Andre Goncalves taking
photos of such details helps us see the changes from one country
to the other. When we take a look at doors in Portugal we see
that colorful and lively designs on frames create the difference,
in England the fencing around the building along with the doors
give character to the whole building. The photographic exhibition

Bykta, born in Ankara, presents Istanbul in a series of

birds-eye view photographs named Flatland & Dzlke
from an alternative perspective that he created.
He photographs places like the Grand Bazaar, Sultanahmet
Square (around the Blue Mosque), Eminn, Yeni Camii (the
New Mosque), and kr Saraolu Stadium with a drone.
Bykta puts together all these photos taken from different
heights and angles in a single frame. As the artist presents
Istanbul in a surreal perspective, and manages to make us feel
as if the city is twining itself recalling the movie Inception.

Drone teknolojisinin emekleme dneminden beri dronelar kiisel ulam arac olarak konumlandrmay planlayan
EHang, tantt drone ile amacna ulama konusunda ciddi
bir adm atm durumda. EHang 184 isimli ara, 200 kilogram
arlnda ve 1,4 metre yksekliinde. 23 dakika havada
kalabilen tat 2 ile 4 saat arasnda arj olup ortalama 100
km/s hzla seyahat ediyor. Ara kapal vaziyete getiinde
ise kanatlarn katlayarak yer tasarrufu yapabiliyor. Tm bu
teknik detaylarnn yannda bir yolcu tayabilen EHang 184,
otopilot zelliine sahip. Yani tata binen kii aslnda src,

EHang plans to position the drones as personal transportation

vehicles since the infancy of drone technology, which finally
took a sure step forward with their newly introduced drone. The
vehicle drone EHand 184 is 200 kilograms in weight and has a
height of 1 meter and 40 centimeters. It can fly for 23 minutes
and can be charged between 2 to 4 hours which can then travel
with a speed of 100 km per hour. And when the vehicle drone is
not in use it can fold its wings to save-up on space. Besides all
these technological details EHang 184 can also carry a passenger
on autopilot mode. Thus, the person in the vehicle drone becomes
neither the driver nor the pilot, but is just simply the passenger.

FREE OF CHARGE WEB PROJECT.

As per the project between New York City Municipality and

technology companies, New Yorkers will have access to high speed
Wi-Fi connection in the citys 500 different access points and
totally free of charge. Smart free of charge booths will be placed
instead of the used telephone booths in the city. With the help of
these smart booths all phones and tablets will be charged gratis via
USB connections. Once entered to the Wi-Fi system, users will be
able use uninterrupted connection with the same user information
from all the districts of New York. Technology experts also underline that the project will be financed by the income from advertisements received. It is expected for the project to bring in almost
US$500 million to the Municipality of New York in 12 years time
with an initial investment of about US$200 million.

Istanbul Modern welcomes 2016 with an exhibition that

promotes nature. Till its Gone is an exhibition offering
an anthology of artists researching nature in theory and
artistically practices ecological matters. Displaying work by
artists from different eras with outlooks on nature and their
complicated relationship with the concept of sustainability
also peoples relations with the ecosystem and various remarks
on their interaction. The exhibition hosts around twenty artists
and art groups from Turkey and other geographical regions
with paintings, statues, fittings, photographs and video works.

May. A comprehensive book also assists shedding light to his philosophical and artistic adventures through his entire period and
themes. Pera Museum hosts the exhibition of iconic artist Giorgio
de Chirico (1888-1978) who inspired surrealistic metaphysical
composition together with the foundations of Roma, Giorgio and
Isa de Chirico between the dates of February 24 May 1, 2016.
Many years later Giorgio de Chirico visits Istanbul the birthplace of his father Evaristo Chirico for the first time through his
exhibition Worlds Enigma.

FAMOUS AS THE GATE OF THE DESERT.

The first part of the project the project called Nur 1 (Light
1) will start operation in the near future. And five years later
it will be able to supply half of the energy need of the country.
Then again it will sell electrical energy to Europe. These power
plant complexes are considered to be Worlds largest solar energy enterprises. The technology used is a unique one: instead of
using photovoltaic panels on rooftops, a mirror system is used.
Even though it is a relatively more expensive system it produces
energy even after sunset. The fundamental structure of this
system is as such: there are 500.000 parabolic shaped, flexional
mirrors and each one is 20 meters high, in a series of 800 linedup in the desert. They are following the suns movement as they
are swivel slowly. With this project, the country aims to be
freed from financial distress and also become one of the leading
countries in the area of solar power.

me happy. I rest when I work. I want

My father is from Caucasia. While
they were on their way for pilgrimage
the Russian- Turkish war started.
Because they couldnt go back to
Caucasia, they stayed in Ciftlikkoy.
My mother is from Konya. My father
and my mother met and got married
in Konya and I was born there. Later
they settled in Ciftlikkoy. As you can
see we have been living here since
Ciftlikkoy village was established.
Your Childhood Passed In Ciftlikkoy.
What Happened Later?
I grew up on the streets of Ciftlikkoy,
I played football. I was a naughty student. My naughty manners
continued when I got into University.
I was into politics since my childhood.
My combative side was on top with
the enthusiasm of youth. I graduated
from University in 13 years without
compromising my nationalist vision.
How Did You Get Interested In Russian and Middle Asian Languages?
I was a leather trader in Russia. I
opened 3 bakeries. I was one of the
first entrepreneurs who opened a
bakery in Russia. I worked there until
1997. I learned their language while
I was working. I can speak several
dialects including Kypchak. I was

Yes, I was always interested in politics.

Serving public is my motto. I quit my
job at the university because of this
reason. But I widened my angle to continue teaching. I was more enthusiastic
when I was young but as I grew old I
wanted to go into politics to serve the
public. People whom I shared my ideas
with supported me. My family prayed
for me. This was the most important
thing for me. Acting together with the
people whom you trust and getting
their support is very important. I have

carrying water to put-off the fire. You

extinguish the fire. This is the most
important thing. I believe I did that.

Silpagar, Since the first day we took
office, we have been conducting and
service oriented jobs. We are also
living the happiness of keeping all the
promises that we have made. We also
promised our disabled citizens an accessible caf. We also kept this promise. In
a park area of 200 sqm, we built a complex for a caf, sports equipment, and
childrens park, iftlikky which will
be visited frequently by our disabled
citizens. The complex has a transparent
faade and it resides on a single floor
of 150 sqm.

What it is that
moves you to shoot
documentary; when
did this passion of
yours took hold of
you?
My grandfather
Hafz Hilmi Cokun,
who left a mark
in my childhood
memories, had been
injured in the arm and the leg was crippled
by an exploding artillery shell during
the Gallipoli Battle. The burned hand of
this war-veteran was scary for his little
grandchild then. But with the passing years
when I came to an age especially to read
and understand, I wished that instead of
being afraid of that hand, I should have
sit in his lap more often and hold his hand
firmly. Unfortunately I no longer had a
grandfather, and the only thing I could do

maimed his hand. Thats how I started to
shoot documentaries on Gallipoli War
Shipwrecks. This passion took me to the
Dumlupnar submarine that lies deep in
the anakkale Strait, and from there to
Marmara. The Marmara Sea was also a
battlefield in 1915 and many martyrs of
anakkale were waiting there to be commemorated. To tell their stories, we began
to work on the Marmara Sea, I held my
grandfathers hand in the depths of Marmara this time. In my childhood I was sending emails to everyone interested in diving,
to producers and diving centers including
Captain Cousteau, asking them questions,
and looking for ways to join them. Now I
am receiving similar mails and I want to
motivate them a little bit more by encouraging these eager young people.
How do you deal with the
disappointment; when you couldnt get
permits for a location that you wanted
to dive-in; or when a dive that you
prepared for months is ruined due to
bad weather conditions?
Every job has its own challenges, of
course, to do researches and shoot films
under water you have to take serious
risks. We are creatures who have not
been created to live on the seabed. You
set to work not only according to your
fitness, but by being dependent on many
instruments and auxiliary elements. Sea
and weather conditions are variable and
Murphys Law is always at work. I used to
try to change the direction of the current,
but now Ive learned to move with the
flow. This applies in the sea as it is in the
narrow corridors of bureaucracy.

I love all of my documentaries as if they

are my children. As in a father who does
not discriminate between his children,
believe me I dont discriminate between
my documentaries. But the anakkale
Documentaries I shoot are dedicated to
my deceased grandfather, have special
places in my heart. And of course my
Turkey Journalists Society, Sedat Simavi
Praise award winning Dumlupnar
documentary that I made on account of
the Dumlupnar Disaster- one of the most
terrible reflection of air hunger situation
in history which, we come across during
our risky, long and deep dives and unfortunately which also happened to me, has
very special place in my heart as well.
You dive in very risky areas. Were
there any dangers that you escaped in
the meanwhile?
In our country, recreational diving limit
is 30 meters. In Traces in the Water
we dove into wrecks much deeper than
that. For example French transport ship
Carthage, that we dove in anakkale, laid
85 meters deep. Our team was prepared
with great care for the exploration dive.
The details in the image and the deck of
Carthage wreck, that 3D sonar scanned
performed by the research vessel Beluga,
were examined down to the last detail.
Our diving team, in order to be protected
against the risks that deep sea diving
brought such as depth intoxication, oxygen toxicity and decompression sickness,
inhaled a special mixture called Trimix
which is a mixture of helium, nitrogen
and oxygen. Despite all the risks taken
into consideration and the projections, I
had a problem with my diving computer.
Fortunately we successfully completed
this dive with our team consisting of:
technical diving supervisor Erol ztunal,
our underwater photographer Adnan
Byk and underwater cameraman Engin
Aygn, and we made a great discovery

THE MARMARA SEA SYMPOSIUM

I followed the organisation, which was the 2nd. this year,
from beginning to end. It was a symposium with very
important topics and speakers. I see this as an important
platform where sides that have influence on our seas meet.
I got information on important projects which have got into
application such as the Life-net project. Fisher nets which have
been left behind, hooked at the bottom or lost while fishing
continue to be deadly traps for sea creatures which are in the
area. Finding out that these traps would be collected and the
sea releived off of these, I was very happy to learn that there
were people who would take care of the Marmara Sea, as a
sea-lover. As divers we could provide important support for
the project as we also come across such ghost nets when we
dive and would like to support the fight against these nets that
turn the underwater into a desert.

that marked the 100th anniversary of

the Gallipoli Campaign. Many problems
such as; in addition to the depth, strong
currents and marine traffic; equipment
failures, adverse weather conditions and
bureaucratic obstacles taught me this:
Preliminary preparation of the surface
team is as necessary as the preliminary
preparation of the underwater team for
safe diving. Because, in the sea nothing
can be as deadly as human error. Especially, in the documentary that we examined
the anatomy of diving accidents occurred
in 54metres-deep-Melpomeni wreck in
Babakale, staying under water for almost
3 hours and my life was tied onto a rope
that a fisherman tied was a lesson well
learned by me.

What were the impressions you got

from the program that you made in
the context of the 100th anniversary of
the Gallipoli? Does the anakkale fire
continue to burn on the other side of the
world?
If you observe the world through the eyes
of a historian but not a geographer, Australia turns out to be the other side of the
anakkale. Because Turkey and Australia
are the two neighboring lands that Dardanelles separate and unite. It is a fire that
will never fade both in the hearts of the
Turkish and the Australians. I was proud
of being invited as a speaker from Turkey
to The Gallipoli International Conference,
held in Australia within the framework of
the centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign.
On the dawn of April 25, 1915, Turks
made their first encounter with Australians that came to the shores of Gallipoli.
The fire of war was caustic on both sides.
In May 24, there was no place left to fight
because of the dead. A one-day truce was
declared between the two sides to bury
the dead. That day, in that farm of death
conversation between the Turkish and
Australians had begun. Turkish soldiers

ANAKKALE: MY STORY
Being able to visit all these wreckages in
the depths, and being in on their secrets
was an ideal that lived within me since
my childhood. It was a duty of loyalty
to my anakkale-veteran-grandfather
Hafz Hilmi Cokun, who named me
Sava (means war in Turkish). Because
my grandfather, that I remember from
my childhood memories, was wounded
from his hand by a shrapnel of a artillery
shell that was fired from a Allied ship
in the Battle of Gallipoli, and become
permanently disabled. I started to shoot
documentaries about wreckagess from the
Battle of Gallipoli in 1997. I have witnessed
with sadness over the years that how the
wreckagess, in that we obtain different
finds in each dive, are rapidly bending
their neck to the erosive power of the seas
and humans as the years go by. They are
disassembled and plundered, and they
became the victims of activities such as
garbage collection and fishing.

soldiers such as; uniform buttons and coins
as tokens of memory, and chocolate treats
to eat. This strange friendship that begun
between the warring parties continued
until the end of the war. Here, my trip to
Australia also added a new link to this
chain of friendship. While the Australian
submarine AE2 hibernating deep at the
Marmara Sea, I trail the remains and
traces in Australia. I made a presentation
on War wreckage, and then by visits to
the Shrine of Remembrance -their most
sacred war memorial in the heart of
Anzac, and to J-class submarines I shot a
documentary for Z TV. I reinforced the
Turkish-Australian friendship that began
during the war in anakkale in 1915,
by shaking hands with new people in
Australia in 2015.
What sort of marks have you witnessed
diving in the Marmara Sea?
Marmara is our sea, it is apple of our
eye. There is no other country in the
world that controls a whole sea... My
childhood wasspent in pursuit of fish, in
the sea,with my harpoon in my hand. I
also started scuba diving in the Marmara
Sea. In the mid-80s the sea was blue as far
as the eye could see. We were training at
Caddebostan-Bostanc coastline or around
Sivriada. There are no place left where I
havent dove around the Princes islands;
we were able to see different sea creatures
in every dive. Fish was plentiful, colorful
sponges and corals too... Unfortunately,
today, they all drowned, their colors are
faded, and they have gone extinct. This is
very painful; I am witnessing the death
and the melt down of the sea, that Im
addicted to.

the Hitlers Lost Submarine: U-20

Hitlers Lost Submarine: U-20 film, that
returned from Marseille with an award,
the story is about a Nazi submarine that lies
offshore from Karasu today. The story that
brings U-20 submarine to Turkish territorial
waters dates back the Second World War.
The U-Bots that Hitler sent to be able to take
his place at the Black Sea, reached the Black
Sea crossing the European continent from
beginning to end. The submarines carried out
56 operations against the Russian fleet from
27 October 1942 until August 25, 1944, and
according to official records sank a total of
45426 tons of ship. When the Red Army conquered Romania in 1944 and submerge three
of the German submarines held in Constanta
Port, the other remaining three submarines,
that were left without exponent, were sunk in
Turkish territorial waters with the order of
their captains. Diving to the U-20, that was
found 23-meter-deep during a mining expedition by The Navy in 1994, and identified
by famous underwater explorer Selcuk Kolay
was nothing but a journey in time. Whereas

that sustains natural cycle and life will
be shaken. Thanks to the natural reserves
and national parks, a limit is being
enforced to mankind, who is accustomed
to dominating earths every square
centimeter. On account of these natural
habitats, that westerners called Game
Reserve and where human intervention is
prevented, there are still bisons that graze
in the meadows, lions that hunt them, and
scavengers that fed on lions reminders
in Africa. Without the Serengeti, Maasai
Mara and the Bird Sanctuary we would be
visiting prisons, in which captive animals
are exhibited, so as to wild life. This is a
trip of wildlife that pursues free animals
from the Bird Sanctuary, Anatolia to
Maasai Mara, Kenya.
As we get closer to the equator, the main
determinant element of life is rain in the
middle of Africa. Life follows the trail of
rain and so water. Like migratory birds
follow the sun, life flows through the land
which water gave life to...

The borders are determined for them by
grasslands, pastures and water resources.
Today one of the most beautiful examples
of this in the world is experienced between
Kenya and Tanzania.
Hundreds of thousands of buffalos,
African ox and antelope change borders
between Kenya and Tanzania, every
year in Africa. The section of this wildlife
reserve that is placed in Tanzania is called
the Serengeti and in Kenya is called
Maasai Mara.
CROCODILES OF THE NILE AND
MARA RIVER
Every year from May to October is the
rain season of Maasai Mara, from October
to April of the Serengeti... As of October,
when Serengeti plains start to meet the
rain, water reserves are filled, weed
grows, abundance and fertility comes
around. Simultaneously wild animals in
Kenya section reach the Serengeti. With
the arrival of the herbivorous animals
such as antelopes and ox-headed animals,
wildlife livens up. Abundance means
plenty of food and reproduction. In March
every year, many ox-headed antelope
and buffalos in the Serengeti National
Park give birth. In May, when rain starts
to stop, water reserves begin to diminish
and grasslands to dry, migration of
hundreds of thousands of animals begin
again. Herds of antelope, buffalos and
ox-headed antelopes follow the rain in
droves and set off towards Maasai Mara
in Kenya. The Rain season that begins in
Kenya in May, continues until October.
While herbivorous animals in the lower
layers of the food ring leave Tanzania,
predators in the top layer and monkeys
remain in Tanzania. Whereas predators
supposed to get by the remaining 6 months
with oil reserves, hungry predators
await herbivores in the country they

Manyas Bird Paradise hosts large brood
colonies that consist of pelicans, herons,
spoonbills, cormorants, wild geese, wild
ducks, and passerines that thousands of
birds nest on trees and reeds. In 1976, Bird
Paradise National Park has been awarded
with class A Diploma, which is the top
class category of the European Diploma
that is given by the Council of Europe to
the natural areas which are preserved very
well and has a value in continental scale.

on safari in Maasai Mara is an expensive
issue. You pay a $100 deposit on average
for the door entrance. Also youll need
to pay the tour company, guidance and
tools. In total, the cost of a one-day tour
may exceed $300. However if you pay
a small amount of money to Maasai
villagers, they can take you to this area,
but, of course dont expect the comfort of a
tour out of this trip. (The author of these
lines also tried this method. Ive paid $50
and Ive toured around the game reserve
without entering through the official
door.) But it is not easy to bargain with
Maasai villagers. These traditional tribes
that wear colorful dresses and still ranch,
are aware of tourism and even taking
photos are chargeable. Its been said that
Maasais, who are still in an effort to
preserve their traditional life styles, wear
red dresses to keep wild animals away.
The other interesting aspect of the Maasai
natives are their chopped off ears. Maasais
men and women cut their earlobes for
beauty and may still perform their
native dance for a nominal fee. With the
herbivorous animals, predatory animals,
migratory birds and traditional cultures
of Maasais that they still preserve, Maasai
Mara is like a festival area in the rainy
season... When the rains begin to go off,
herds begin to depart for their commute
to the Serengeti and as the Kenya side
begins to get quite, the Tanzanian side
begins to stir. This cycle which is called
the Great Migration has been continuing
for centuries. The Serengeti and Maasai
Mara under world protection list and
apply to both countries, is the worlds
largest natural life park. To preserve
this park not only means the survival of
wild animals, but also means to protect
the worlds natural balance. Because the
continuation of each life depends on the
other lifes survival. While rain revives
meadows, migrating animals crumble

Mankind, for the continuation of life,
should demarcate not between the
countries, but between itself and wild life.
Natural life reserves are a significant
improvement in terms of this awareness
to be achieved. The initiative of the logic
of protection areas and national parks is
the USA... First-time, in 1872 to protect
hot springs, Yellowstone gained National
park status. But that decision did not
prevent hunting, farmers and shepherds in
the United States have continued to hunt
wild animals. The wild animal population
in the middle of the 1900s showed a
rapid decline and it was seen that in the
1990s, the worlds first National park
began to dry out. Thereupon, in 1995,
wolves were brought back to Yellowstone
and hunting was prohibited. With the
arrival of wolves, deer began to stay
away from public areas and trees began
to grow again and vegetation flourished.
Trees and plant richness have pulled the
birds to the region. Thanks to the tree
branches beavers began to rebuild small
dams on the river bed. Geese, waterfowl,

WHO IS FERDINAND VANDEVEER
HAYDEN?
Today, we kind of owe him the concept
of National park. Ferdinand Vandeveer
Hayden, who was born in Massachusetts
Westfield, interrupted his career, which
was to be an archaeologist, because of the
American Civil War. Hayden, who was
employed as surgeon in the US military
for a time, made studies on the Yellowstone
post-civil war, and in 1872, with the help
of William Henry Jacksons stunning
large-format photos, has led to convince the
Congress to establishment of USAs first
national park, Yellowstone National Park.

and has a value in continental scale.
Manyas Bird Sanctuary, which is spread
over an area of 17 058 hectares, is located
on the bird migration route from Asia
Minor to Europe. Also Kakar Mountains
National Park and Sarkam Allahu
Akbar Mountains National Park are very
important parks in terms of wild life.
OX-HEADEDS OF SERENGETI
What about protection? Indeed, there are
very serious problems in our country as
well as in the world. Now our cities are
gigantic, and we become in need to use
more resources to meet the needs of the
cities. For both energy and food needs,
as well as the need of mining more and
more as a result National parks are losing
their protected status. Spaces of those
that didnt lose their protected status are
shrinking slowly due to contamination of
the river beds, as well as the construction
work done to overcome transportation
problems. According to studies by scientists
the number of wild animals in the world
is running out rapidly. Perhaps we are not
aware of this yet, but the loss of natural

and get eaten by lions and crocodiles. Let
Mara savannahs become cheerful with
Maasais dances they perform in colorful
dresses with their chopped off ears, and the
running cheetahs.

My backpacking trip with my two close

friends Thea and Julia started with some
anticipation: turning 30, life demands something big and exceptional. Many stories can
be written, already. Many more are to come.
And the annual vacation certainly calls for
adventurous, unique, life changing stories!
Well, here is my next story: Starting off
in Hungary I happened to be thrown into
a political debate about the refugee crisis
contemporary Europe faces. Stopping by at
a plinka (national liquor) booth at a beautifully illuminated Christmas market, the
Hungarian vendor started to discuss his radical and national views on that matter. Even
though he spent most of his life in Germany,
in a multi-cultural region, he spoke out what
the Hungarian media propagates. But as we
are all democratic, everybody has the right of
own views. This is what Europe is and shall
be about. On our journey we slept in trains
and on the bus. We saw people traveling to
different countries to meet their beloved ones.
National boundaries do not matter therefore.
We ate food from five different countries.
One could tell how the history cross-influenced the national cuisines. They are all similar, yet different. We saw different landscapes
and debated about history with locals. Serbian
Belgrade still provides remnants of the
Yugoslavian war. Few buildings are marked
by shotholes which are passed by the modern
and busy young people who seem to be wanting to forget the past, live now, look forward
to their futures and certainly know how to
make the best of their nightlifes! Finally we
reached Istanbul. What a pulsating city! We
arrives there tired. Tired from our previous
stops through Europe. By then, I was ready
to go home. Instead, the city of Istanbul asked
for a new awakening. The people, the noise,

etkilemiyor. Eve getirmeyi planladm o

deitirecek hikayeyi. Onun yerine, sadece
Adan Bye ve oradan da Cye gittiimi
hissettim. Ar yorucu bir yolculuktu.

and city,I absorbed it all, exhausted. Exempt
from any outspoken expectations returned
home. And when I was asked about how my
trip went,I said nothing more than fine.
Why so? The traveling has been full of precious moments. We learned many new things,
got to know interesting and open-minded
people, were kindly welcomed. However,
really nothing stunned me anymore, nothing
awed me. I forgot to bring back the souvenir I
was looking for: a or the life-changing story.
Instead, I felt like just having gone from A to
B to C. On an exhausting excursion. Period.
I commenced to reflect why I have come back
with some disillusion. Well, beforehand we
have not made plans for our trip. We rather
planned from day to day. To go with the
flow was our philosophy. To inhale the
moments and take them back home was the
goal of the vacational journey. However,
my baggage contained some dead freight. It
was the plan to return with a new awe. And
this life changing moment of story. This was
the plan. I simply misplanned. Lest not to
misplan again, I have learned: a good traveler
does not plan to be awed or to experience
THE adventure, THE moment, THE story.
A good traveler simply is. A good traveler
simply travels.

Those were the days of old Beyolu (Pera),

theres nobody left anymore those using
such pompous language should read this
article. There is a sweet little shop which
savors the memories of old Beyolu alive
with its traditional products and sincerity.
What a waste if you havent visited one of
the oldest shops in Beyolu called Yldz
(three stars) hosting a wide range of flavors,
and worse if you havent even tasted its
handmade Turkish delights and candy!
This sweetshop in Beyolu (Pera) with its
colorful berlingots (hard candies), assorted
Turkish delights, marzipan and chocolate
will keep you away from your route. You
will be stuck to the shop window as to speak.
Im pretty sure even those of you who are
not fond of candy shops will find this place
absolutely interesting. As soon as you enter
into the shop it takes you 50 years back
in time. Glass jars with yellow brass lids
filled with colorful candy remind a spring
garden. So, we came to Yldz (three
stars) candy shop to hear the story of the
candy leading us to a Turkish philosophic
saying as lets eat sweets for a mellifluous
talk. Ahmet Fikri Drtler, founder of
Yldz, settles in Istanbul after the Turkish
War of Independence in Inebolu. In time he
finds an apprenticeship opportunity at the
famous candy shop Alptekinler at Uskudar.
In 1926 he gets lucky, and establishes
Yldz (three stars) with his brother and
one of his friends. As they start off with
three people they give the name of three
stars ( Yldz) to the candy shop. After
sometime Mr. Fikri Drtler continues
the business by himself and when his son
Feridun comes of age, he passes the business
onto him (Feridun also works with his son
now following on to the third generation).
Feridun Drtler, a Galatasaray Highschool
graduate and also a former Galatasaray
soccer player, continues to run his business
in this nostalgic candy shop. Yldz fills
the fond memories of those who were forced

right you are attracted by the jams in
huge copper urns that are 180 years
old. Their colors are striking; and
their aroma is another thing, and their
frequenters are quite a lot. There is every
kind of sweets in the shop from tahini
to halva, to Turkish delights and jams.
The jam known as mastic in Izmir,
though not for sure, is a heritage from
the Ottomans called the white sweet is a
must be tasted. They have bergamot and
vanilla aromas. As you may understand
they do not only produce sweets, but also
bring to daylight those tastes (recipes)
that are about to be forgotten If you
happen to pass from the Duduodalar
street make a stop at Yldz and taste
the mastic delight which is a joy to the
mouth! In any case the only product you
try will be a reference for you for the
other flavors in the shop

berlingots in; bergamot, strawberry,
mint, orange, sesame, rose, lemon and
cinnamon flavors.

He is actually a recycling worker... For Cesur,

bread comes from not the stone but off of
the streets. When you fall asleep he pounds
the pavements step by step to earn his living
dipped deep into elbow grease, to support his
mother in the village, and to marry in the
spring. His fiance wanted a mobile phone.
Brother, it had to be a new one, she said that
it mustnt be a second-hand one, I will collect
paper and hopefully will buy it...
This is a paper shop in Kucukpazar, Istanbul.
5 teenagers, who are from the same village of
Aksaray, are there; they went to bed at 8 a.m.
woke up at 12 noon. Papers are probably being
taken out now, its best to hit the roads before
letting others collect them it isnt the time to
sleep. The butter which came from the village
is smeared on the fried and partly burned
breads, steaming hot tea is poured into the
cups, and Cesur says Come brother, sit down
for breakfast, and a cup of tea for us too...

scraping building, the weather and the room is
cold but tea is hot; some of the paper collectors
have yet to fully wake up, yawning, some
already washed their faces, wiping their faces
with their arms. Cesur talks while slurping

WHY DONT THEY WANT TO BE
MUNICIPAL WORKERS?
A paper collector makes money at rates ranging
from 50 to 200liras per day. Their average
monthly income ranges from 1500 to 2500liras.
They work an average of 20 hours a day for it;
because it offers health coverage and lesser working hours becoming a municipal worker makes
sense, however most of the paper collectors are
whether migrant workers or seasonal workers.
They go back to their villages after working for 6
months. Therefore it is hard for them both to get
a job in municipality, and to bring their families
to Istanbul.

When we were looking for a paper
collector to interview, we came across
plenty of Afghan-originated people. And
Turkish-originated paper collectors are
complaining about this situation mostly.
Syrians also increased the competition by
joining this caravan; now they cannot
find paper and plastic if theyre a bit late.
The majority of Afghan paper collectors
are illegal and therefore they refrain from
anyone who wants to talk.

Weather is nice its definitely the weather to
roam the streets. But count no worker happy till
it is cold, it rains or snows. Cesur goes to work
every day because he needs money to get married. He cuts in saying: Im working a lot these
days, brother... My fiance wanted a mobile
phone, the ones that shoot photos. She wanted it
to be one of the latest models. I offered buying a
second-hand, but she showed reluctance, asked
if she was going to be using a phone that some
others had already used. A new one is very
expensive, but there is nothing to do, Im obliged
to buy it. Thats always in my mind... I had
made a heavy sack, recently. Most of them were
plastic, they are the ones that turn the scales
and make good money. We leave the bags we
filled in a place and then a car comes and carries them away. But a municipal car had taken
away my bag. It tore my heart out that, of grief,
I could not sleep until the morning. When they
take away ones great effort like that, it cuts him
to the bone so bad...
GARBAGEMEN ARE PEOPLE TOO

while were clacking. We leave the bag at the
edge of the foot of the Galata Bridge, and attach

us. I guess they think we smell bad, but they are
people just as we are. But I dont feel sad, I laugh
it off, we get got used to it now. Were seeing
and hearing everything in the streets. There are
people who ask money by cutting our way, and
who ask for trouble.

We never mess the environment up. At
midnight even while Im passing by bars, I rip
garbage bags a little, take the tins, tie the bags
and put them back . Garbagemen are people too
you know, why would I make things difficult
for them so I could earn money. Although he
has been pacing the streets of Istanbul many
times over, Cesur still preserves the Anatolian
spirit. One that considers the other, sharing, bighearted and good... I took a lesson from Cesur,
I remembered that we forgot to consider others
in the city. Through Karakoy, we came to
Tophane. I ask him how many times he travels
through these streets. Well, I travel endlessly until the morning. There were times that I walked

THEY ARE RECYCLING WORKER
In fact, Cesur is not aware how an important
the job he is doing for the city life is. He and
his friends decompose garbage that we cannot
decompose and make more efficient use of
resources. So, what will Cesur do if government
regulations related to the recycling sector are aggravated? No farm, no shops, no job, how would
he marry, how would he continue the struggle
for survival. And what will happen to hundreds
even thousands of recycling workers like Cesur?
We hope our law makers consider these people
too. But he doesnt care about it. When everyone
withdraws home to sleep at night in Istanbul,
he is on the streets. Isnt he afraid? Cowards die
many times before their deaths. He collects citys
paper for his mom in the village, for his fiance
and his unborn children. He has to fight for his
future. Because he is Cesur (A name that means
gallant in Turkish).

We couldnt able to understand Cesur just by asking questions. So we took his sack-patched-cart from his hands
and hit the roads. Together we paced the streets...

We had a chat on literature with Ahmet

mit, who brings detective stories combined
in history, also combining history with
Istanbul and providing information of the
culture and civilization of the geography in
his books. He said If writers such as Nazm
Hikmet, Sait Faik, Orhan Kemal, Ouz
Atay, Bilge Karasu did not exist we would
not either...
You were born as the seventh child of a
rug merchant father and tailor mother
in 1960. What was the road map that
life laid ahead of you afterwards?
In fact I still cannot see the map even if
there is one. Some things happen through
coincident The best example for this
is my life. I am the son of a middle class
family in Gaziantep. My father is a rug
merchant and my mother is a tailor, who
financially supports the family with her
work and reads books all the time. In time
my eldest brother went to London, another
to Istanbul and yet another to Ankara
for education. All of a sudden we started
experiencing the waves of big cities such
as Istanbul, Ankara and London. Back
then people who went abroad to study
was extremely rare with their departure
we started to get more books in the house.
Just looking at those books before you
begin to read reminds you of a different
world that lies out there. When all these
come together they somehow create a base
for today. I began school early because
I was born in September, I used to be a
very successful student, and my grades
were always good. When I began middle
school hesitation took over. I guess I was
also lazy, well teenage-hood Then I took
a-hold of my lessons and all went well.
What would have happened if other
people took over your writing?
Bad and even terrible, writing should
develop on its own. One day when a group
I was a member of asked me to prepare a
report, I realized that I actually wrote a
story. So it all went on its own pace. Later

THERE IS REAL MURDER THAT IS
THE MURDER OF ISTANBUL
The murders in the novel are not real
however there is real murder, that is
the murder of Istanbul. Now that is real
murder. I killed the killer of Istanbul on
virtual platform. Because these people are
demolishing the historical and natural
texture of Istanbul. Unfortunately no one
tells them to stop, because they are very
powerful. As a writer I planned a mission
to kill these low-lives. Surely we do not
want anyone t be killed in real life. This is
a novel and in a book the liars and thieves
need to be revealed. This is one of the
duties of writers. We need to point out the
mistakes in society.

the socialism that I imagined was much
different than what I saw and I decided
that: I should say what I mean the utopia

to walk around in the streets of Balat,
Kocamustafapaa around the lower class
houses where the scent of meals cooked
take over the street. I cannot think of

Galata Sufi dervish lodge in Beyolu. It
gives one great tranquility and peace. I
love visiting the Princes Islands in the
weekdays. There is nothing like strolling
around the uninhabited streets like a
lazy cat. I like zmir and some districts of

Istanbul is the naturally most beautiful

and historically richest city in the world.
I traveled to different cities around the
world, there no other city to match its
beauty. However this city is going under
severe demolition, its nature, forests
and historical elements are getting
demolished. There is a Byzantine Palace
between Santa Sofia and the sea, they
built a hotel on top of it. The city has no
voice, the voices of the city are artists,
sensitive non-governmental organization,
environmentalists and academics raise
awareness. I wanted to create awareness
in providing such detailed information
in my work. Hey people, realize what
you are living upon, become aware of the
in which you live, come to your senses I
wanted to warn and shake them up.
There is serious research behind
Bab- Esrar (The door of mysteries),
Patasana, Kavim (The Tribe) and A

Ahmet mit; In almost all my novels the

events in the story unfold with a murder,
Chief Inspector Nevzat tries to solve the
case. Farewell my Beautiful Homeland is
completely a historical novel. The way that
Boris Pasternak informed how the revolution affected Doctor Zhivagos life, I tried to
reveal the changes in ehsuvar Samis and
his lover Esters life with the effect of the II.
Constitutional Period. Although I talk about
over a hundred years ago, it is very similar
to our day It turned out to be a novel with
various plots and many important events.
I traveled a lot and read a lot for this novel.
Im very tired yet very peaceful. Although
Ahmet mit, seems to walk along the lines
of history in his novels he seems to have
fallen right in the center of it all in this one.
In The Smell of Snow with communists,
In the Door of Mysteries with Rumi and
Shams Tabrizi... In The prettiest brother of
Beyolu he took the 6-7 September events as
side stories. In Farewell my Beautiful Motherland he talks of a love affair that takes
place in the deepest areas of the state and the
rebellion that flames upon it. This time the
leading role is not detectives but history!

When I wrote the Hittites, Patasana

I was not an archeologist but I made
my research and wrote them. I wa
not an architect when I wrote Beyolu
Rhapsody but lived in Beyolu. When
I wrote Kukla(The puppet) I wrote the
journalist. In Kavim (The Tribe) I wrote
about Assyrian but I had no information
when I began writing. I would first set up
the story then make research about the
where the story takes place. How is life
there, how does the sun rise, how is the
night-time, how d people talk, how d they
dine, how are the houses made I would
observe and take pictures of all this and
conduct interviews with the people. It
is difficult to write about places I know
nothing about without the research and
observation period as such. This is my
style. I like to research things that I do
not know and read about them, find out
things and relay these to the reader, use
them in my novels. Other peoples stories
are more interesting to me.

In this article I would briefly like to touch

on the importance of the city of Bursa
with respect to silk trade between East and
the West throughout history, especially
starting from the 12th century up 18th
century. Bursa used to be a world market
between the East and the West in terms
of commercial trade and business, not
only for silk trade but also for other Asian
goods.
THE RISE OF BURSA IN THE OTTOMAN SILK ROAD HISTORY
After the Italians were massacred in
Tabriz, the new trade route became
Trabzon-Pera or Constantinople for silk
supplies from Iran. Italian merchants
were using Bursa and stopping by Pera
while trading this precious commodity.
Bursas role as an economic engine also
fostered the economic foundation of
the Ottoman State. The Ottomans were
always concerned about keeping the silk
road and leaving it open in the 14th and
the 15th centuries. Around 1400s, good
silk were told to be produced in 3 centers:
Damascus, Kaffa and Bursa.
Between 1400 and 1630, Bursa was an international market for Iranian raw silk
and western woolen cloth. In the 2nd half
of the 14th century traffic between Italy
and Tabriz shifted from Trabzon-Constantinople to Tabriz-Bursa.

During 1487-1512 Bursa silk market

reached a record high in silk importation. Merchants from Chios brought
mastic to Bursa to exchange for raw
silk. Genoese and Jews were competing
with Florentines for Iranian silk in
Bursa market. Most of the merchants,
however in the 15th and 16th century
were Muslims, Iranians or Azeris.
Turkish merchants exported the raw
Italian silk to Italians in exchange for
wool cloth.

THE PRICE OF SILK IN BURSA

In 1500s, the price of silk was fluctuating seasonally between 62 and 69 akes.
If we would like to succinctly touch on
the silk prices in Bursa, it was primarily
determined by the volume of supplies
from Iran. The main problems affecting
the silk price were:
a. Shortage of supplies
b. Embargo on Iran
c. War with Iran
Even though the prices were averaging around 70 akes between 1467
and 1580, the debasements caused
inflation and the price of a lidre of
silk in ake terms first jumped to 250
akes in 1582, then 394 akes in 1637.

SILK TRADE AFFECTING THE

WORLD POLITICS
Its for sure that the silk trade affected
the world politics from 1250 and on.
Ottomans and Iranians often had
conflicts for the control of silk route. By
the mid 17th century, silk became the
most important good among a number
of imported goods. Ottomans and
Iranians hugely benefitted from silk
trade and silk route through taxation.
When it comes to taxation, we see that
state treasuries received large amounts
of revenue from taxation on the raw
silk trade.

GOODS
While the Europeans were bringing
woolen clothes with them in order to
exchange with silk products, typical
Ottoman exports included rhubarb,
wax, musk, mohair (especially Ankara mohair), pepper, Bursa silk cloth,
drugs, and occasionally fish roe, wool,
cotton cloth, rugs, hides and furs.
Even though Bursa silk and Ankara
mohair were highly admired by international merchants, spice accounted a
huge share in Ottoman Trade History.
Bursa was an important transit center
for spices coming from India and
Arabia in the 15th century.
However, the decline of the Silk Road
started with the discovery of new
continents. Access to raw materials,
cheaper products and vast lands
attracted the merchants to Americas.
The sea route became more important
through Trans-Atlantic voyages.

Mustafa who was born in 1921 in Urgup

was a football lover and a goalkeeper. He
wanted to go to Istanbul after completing his military service. While he was
thinking of going to Istanbul, the District
Governor of the time, Fahri Civgin made
an offer to Mustafa which would change
his faith as well as the region. He wanted
him to stay in Urgup, he wanted him to
be a football trainer, in return he promised him to make him a state worker to
make it binding. Mustafa took office in
Urgup Tahsin Aga Library in 1944. He
was thrown into a humid room where
unread manuscript books were kept. Once
he began to work, he took the books out
and dried them... When he noticed that
villagers didnt come to the library he
decided to bring the library to the villages.
But life conditions were hard. There were
some willages that couldnt be reached by
motor vehicles, the only option is go on
donkey back. Mustafa Guzelgoz asked

struggle he finally persuades the Ministry
to give him a donkey. He had chests made
for the books and loaded them on donkey
back. Mustafa tried to attract people to the
library wasnt pleased with the women
never came to the library. He thought
How can I attract women to get into the
library? and found a solution. He explains his idea as follows: Women came
to the library, they looked inside from
behind the bars but they never came in. At
that time, Zenith sewing machines were
new on the market. I wrote a letter to the
company and told them to send a sewing
machines and that I would mention their
name anytime possible as promotion.
They were kind, they sent one Singer and
nine Zenith sewing machines. I put them
in the library and I placed Oren Bayan
sewing magazines on the machines. I
gathered men in the village and told them
to send their wives to the library on Tuesdays. Young women came to the library to
prepare their trousseau. As women came
to the library on Tuesdays, Mustafa sent
letters to his friends outside of Urgup and
wanted them to send books. Most of them
responded his letters and sent books. One
of his friends carried Mustafa Guzelgoz
to the international platform

One day, America announced that they
organized a competition for creative
people who are active in society and
requested State Planning Organization
to report these people to them. While
State Planning Organization was trying
to decide who should be sent to America,
one of Mustafas friends from Urgup
who worked in the institution, told them
about Mustafa. As documents were sent
to America, 3 journalists came from
American News Agency to make research

So, then why are you meddling with all this.
Do you think they would increase your salary
if there were people in the library? Do you
want more trouble, noone goes to that library
at all anyway.

Guzelgoz and they witnessed the reading
habit of the villagers. On 21 November
1963 the works of creative people around
the world were gathered for the competition in America. After the eliminations,
Italy and Turkey were the ones to qualify
for the finals. The votes were equal but
the president of the jury voted on behalf
of Mustafa Guzelgoz and said I vote on
behalf of Turkey. If those books were
carried to the villages, Italian candidate
wouldnt have to educate gamins but
Turkish candidate made an effort to
prevent children to become gamins. But
this wasnt enough for Mustafa Guzelgoz.
He started a volleyball field next to the
library. He opens carpet weaving and
Turkish folk dance courses. He placed
billboards for the Village Wall Newspapers in Karain, Mustafapasa and Cokek
villages. He organises the first cinema
event in rgp and carries out photographic activities. Unfortunately a claim
was made about him regarding misusage
of trust and an inquisition was carried
out against him. Guzelgoz, got very sad
because of this inquisition and appealed
for his pension. His 28 years career in the
library ended when he was 50 years-old.
When Mustafa Guzelgoz met inspector
Semim in Istanbul he asked him about
the inquisition he conducted. He was
surprised by his answer..Mr.Semim told
him that they were under pressure about
writing negative things in the report and
wanted him not to tell anyone. This kind
person who made an effort to enlighten
Anatolia with his donkey died of respiratory failure in 17 February, 2005 when
he was 84 years-old. But his services, his
vision and the awareness he created lasted
for generations.. Do you know the name
of the donkey that played an important
role in Mustafa Guzelgozs career was?

history in one of the most beautiful
places of Istanbul for over one hundred
years. The historical hotel that hosted
celebrities has been a muse for famous
writers including Agatha Christie and
Ahmet Umit. Pera Palaces building is
like a historical monument. Its the place
where east and west meet. It carries
the remarks of belle poque days of
Istanbul as it continues to reflect history

by Alexander Vallaury a Levantine
architect who lived in Istanbul hosted so

With its magnificent chandeliers and
high ceilings Pera Palace was built
in Tepebasi seeing the breathtaking

building illuminating in the city except
for the Ottoman Palaces. It was the first
building with elevator which works with
electricity and hot water system. The

her neighbor in 2014 as his name

other rooms in the hotel named after
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, President
Ismet Inonu, President Celal Bayar
and Ernest Hemingway. Naming the
room Ahmet Umit was the first time
a living writers was given to a room.
Umit publicized his book The Fog and

medium says they would receive a massage
from her on Wednesday but they find
Agatha on Tuesday, 11 days after her
disappearance. She was staying at a hotel
where she introduced herself as Mrs. Neele.
The tragic part is the surname of the
woman whom her husband was in love
with was Neele. After her disappearance
Christie is diagnosed with amnesia by
two doctors but this story is never told in
her autobiography. There are so many
theories about these 11 days including that
she stayed at Pera Palace. But according
to her autobiography, Christie comes to
Istanbul with the Orient Express in 1926.
She meets a young engineer from Holland.
The engineer who often visits Istanbul
recommends a hotel for her to stay.
Christie tells the story in her own words:
The engineer from Holland wanted to
know where I would stay. He was seriously
interested in me. He warned me against the
dangers of the city. He said, You should be
careful. Dont believe what people say and
dont go to entertainment venues without
asking. When we arrived in Istanbul he
invited me to dinner to protect me from
danger. He said Tokatlyan Hotel is very
good. You will be safe there. I will call you
about nine oclock and take you to a nice
restaurant. The following day he called
me about nine oclock just like he said he
would and took me to the historical places
in Istanbul. After a nice night he took me
back to Tokatlyan Hotel. While we were
standing on the door sill he implied that he
wanted to kiss me but he wouldnt dare.
The Cook Company, the travel Agency
of the Orient Express and Pera Palace
booked room no 411 for Christie and
notified her requests to the hotel but
according to the writers autobiography
she escaped from England for a while
without telling anyone and spent time
at the Tokatlyan Hotel. You can believe
which story you want.

A DREAM THAT CAME TRUE
Three Armenian originated Turkish citizens
realized the need of luxury hotels in Istanbul and
managed to transfer title deeds of the land which
belonged to the Foundation of Bayezid-I Sanayi
into their names but as they bought and sold
stocks they couldnt deal with the construction. In
the meantime, La Compaigne International des
Wagons-Lits (International Wagon-Lits Company) initiated the Orient Express round trips.
They offered a magical journey to passengers to
the exotic places of the Orient in luxury wagons
but there werent any luxury hotels in Istanbul,
which was one of the most beautiful and mystical
cities of the journey famous with its artistic and
cultural activities. After considering this fact, the
train company founded its own hotel management department in 1894.
The manager of the hotel Georges Nagelmackers initiated the construction in Istanbul right
away. He wanted to build a luxury hotel that
would compete with hotels in Europe but that
wasnt easy. The credit document in the archives
of the Ottoman Bank proves that the company
of Nagelmackers got bankrupt in 1894 the and
construction of the hotel was completed with 30
thousand liras loan, which they got from the
bank.

Union have already started working on different solutions. Soon it
is planned to communicate with the
most important fiber of the city, i.e.
its citizens. Today, there are more
than 10 countries whose cities are

Smart city planning means that life
is mobilized and that its citizens can
receive instantaneous service which
can also be questioned. This application has already been brought to life
among the Unions municipalities. For
example; citizens are able to receive
instant information on all kinds of
activities with CRM applications, and
also citizens are able to do all necessary payments via mobilized payment
devices. It is not hard to guess that
these types of applications will increase soon. It is also certain that we will
witness more of these. For a town to
be a Smart City, some work need to be
done in areas such as egovernment,
ecitizen, elife, Mobility, eenvironment and eeconomy. In our country,
the egovernment application has been
a great success. And because of that we

interest to mobility. Most everyone
in different age groups use a smart
device, and one can access all kinds of

these devices. Under the heading of
e-environment is the renewal of towns
and smarter cities with suitable and
sensitive settlements to climate and
environment, so that our towns will be
one step ahead. Aside from technologically smart buildings, heat insulation
and environmentally compatible
settlements make cities more livable

zere izlediimiz, dinlediimiz, okuduumuz her
eyin alt metninde yatanlar daha iyi kavrayabilmek
ve yorumlayabilmek asndan nemli bir olgu.
Bunun kk yalarda retilmesi ve alanmas gelecee
atlan salam bir adm olacaktr. te bu yzden ilk ve
ortaretimden balayarak ocuklara bu dersin zorunlu
verilmesi onlarn etraf ve kendilerini tanmlamalarnda
olduka yararl olacaktr. Problemlere ve evreye daha
hkim olan yerel ynetimler vatandalara en yakn
kurumlardr. Bu konular zerinden yola karak Trkiyede
yaayan ocuk nfusuna baktmzda yaanan sorunlarn

devam etti. ocuk Esirgeme Kurumu emsiyesi altnda
da korunma ihtiyacndaki ocuklarn sorunlarna zm
aranmaya baland. Bir hayrseverin ba ile 1992
ylnda bu ocuklarn ne ekilde korunursa topluma

kazandrlaca hakknda bir model oluturmak asndan Bolluca ocukky kuruldu ve hala devam ediyor.
ocukkynde yaayan yaklak 123 ocuumuz var.
ocuklar devlet korumas altna alndktan sonra bizim
devlet ile yrttmz protokol kapsamnda amz
orannda karlanan talebimiz ile gelen ocuklara bakm
hizmeti veriyoruz. Bakm hizmetlerimiz arasnda ocuklar kye girdikten sonra salk, eitim, sosyal, psikolojik
vb. her trl destei veriyoruz.

kardelerin bir arada kyde yaamalar bizim kabul
kriterlerimizin en nemlisini oluturuyor. ok ocuklu
ailelerin ocuklarna ncelik veriyoruz. nk kardeler
gelip tek bir evde yayorlar ve aile balar kk yatan
itibaren korunuyor, kopmam oluyor. Bydkleri
zaman da bunun faydasn gryorsunuz. Eitim hayatlarnn sonuna kadar kalabiliyorlar. Kimisi niversiteye
gidiyor, kimisi raklk eitimi alarak meslek sahibi
oluyor. Kyde yayorlar, daha sonra atmz evlerde
yayorlar. Paralarn kazanp bamsz bireyler olana
kadar biz onlara her trl destei veriyoruz.
Trkiyedeki ba algsn nasl deerlendiriyorsunuz?
Akas Trkiyedeki ba algs ok kurumsal deil.
Trkiye insan her zaman yardm eder ancak ba
olgusu daha yeni yeni kurumsal olma yolunda ilerliyor.

Peki, kurumlarn dnda bireysel olarak balar
nasl buluyorsunuz?

Bireysel olarak zaten balarmz var. Ama bizde

yoldan geen dilenciye de para verilir. O da bir ba
eklidir. Dzenli ba dediimiz kredi kart ve banka
hesabndan ba yapan balarmz var. Bunun
daha dzenli ekilde olmas biraz daha ba kurumsal
hale getiriyor. Bu durum daha emekleme aamasnda

diyebilirim. nsanlarn ve firmalarn gelirlerinin bir

ksmn bu tr balara ayrmalar konusunda gelimi
lkelerdeki oranlar ile bizim oranmz arasnda ok fark
var. Gelimi lkelerde bu tr vakflara ayrlan fonlarla bizdeki ok farkl. Ama bizde de herkes bir ekilde
yardm ediyor.
Bu almalarn ilerleme kaydetmesi iin zellikle
kimlerin destei gerekiyor?
Bu anlamda basnn destei ok nemli. nsanlar
bilindik birinden gelen eylere tabii ki daha duyarl
oluyorlar. Toplum tarafndan tannan biri sizin projenizden bahsederse, proje orta bulunursa o zaman ok
ses getirebiliyor. O yzden bizim de duyurmamz nem
tekil ediyor. En ideali ocuklar adna gzel bir eyler
yapp ondan aldmz sonucu duyurmak. Biz de bunu
yapmaya alyoruz.
Koruncuk olarak 2016 yl iin hayata geirmek istediiniz projeleriniz neler?
2016da ocuklarla ilgili bir platformumuz var. Konu
olarak mlteci ocuklar ile ilgili bir platform yapmay planlyoruz. Daha henz somut bir ey yok ama o
alanda almay arzu ediyoruz. Bir de zmir Urlada bir
ocuk ky daha aacaz. nmzdeki hafta inaatna
balyoruz.

insanlar, gnmzde daha ok kapal meknlarda yaam
sava veriyor. zellikle kentlerde d mekn kullanm;
gvenlik, trafik, su oranlar, yabanc korkusu nedeniyle
tehlikeli bir hal ald. Kentlerde aralarn park yeri olarak
grlen sokaklar, aslnda sosyallemenin ve insan ilikilerinin en youn yaand yerler. Bugn kent dokusundaki
en nemli sorunlardan biri, sokaklardaki ara hkimiyeti

nedeniyle sokak yaantsnn kaybolmas. ocuklarn

geliiminde sokakta oynamann nemli olduu konusuna
ebeveynler gn getike daha ok nem vermeye baladlar. Ancak unutmamak gerek sokaklar sadece ocuklar
iin deil, her ya grubu iin doal bir sosyalleme alan.
Bu konuda farkndaln artmas ile birlikte ise ailelerin ve
kent ynetimlerinin ocuk dostu kentsel evreler yaratma
dncesi ortaya kt. Avrupada, deien ada ehir
yaamyla birlikte ocuun ak kamusal alan kullanmnn
gittike azalmas ile ilgili meknsal, sosyal, antropoloji,
psikoloji alanlarnda birok alma yapld. Hollandada
Woonerf, ngilterede Home Zone ve Avustralyada Shared Zone bunlarn en belirgin rnekleridir. Tokyodaki
Side Streets ise benzer ekilde ileyi gstermekte. Bu
almalarla amalanan, trafii pasifize edip bu yolla yayalarn ve zellikle ocuklarn kendilerini oraya ait hissetmelerini salamak.

WOONERF
1970lerin sonunda Hollanda, ara srclerini yavalatmak
iin yeniliki yaklamlara nclk etmitir. Yaayan sokak
ya da yaayan avlu olarak anlan bu yaklam ilk olarak
Delft kentinde uyguland. Bu felsefenin ana dncesi sokan ara merkezli deil, yaya merkezli olarak tasarlanmas.
Bu sisteme gre sokaklarda yaya ve bisiklet yollar ayrlmakta, ara trafii minimuma indirilmekte, sokan belirli
yerlerine ara girmemesi iin iaretler konulmakta, aralarn
fazla hz yapmasn engelleyecek nlemler alnmakta, zemin
farkllklar ile alanlar tanmlanmaktadr.
HOME ZONE

Ama, konut sokaklarn sadece trafik iin deil, insanlar

iin de kullanlr hale getirerek yaam kalitesini gelitirmek. ngiliz Hkmeti 2002de Home Zone yaklamna
sponsorluk yapm, devlet programnda yer vermi, ayrca
bu konuda yeni kurallar ve kanunlar dzenlenmitir. Okul,

ihtiya giderebilmesi, eriilebilirlii, ebeveyn kontrolne
olanak salamas gibi pek ok nedenle Home Zone blgeleri

Sokaklar herkes iin gvenli hale getiren Home Zoneda
sokak, bir trafik koridorundan, iyi bir yaam nitelii sunan
deerli bir ak alana dnmekte. Araba sahipleri iyi ve
gvenli bir park yerine sahip olurlar, ocuklar gven iinde
oynarlar. ocuklarn kamusal alanla kurduklar meknsal
iliki, onlarn gndelik yaamnn nemli bir parasdr.
Ancak ocuklarn kamusal alanlarla kurduu iliki ounlukla kesintiye uramakta. Bu kesintinin nedenleri ncelikle
ebeveynlerin trafik, gvenlik gibi nedenlerle ocuklarn
sokakta oynamaktan alkoymalarndan kaynaklanyor.
Oysa kamusal ak alanlarn, yerel komu evrelerin ocuk
geliimine etkileri nemli derecededir. Bu tip uygulamalarn bilgisi ve deneyimi ile kentlerimizi daha insan ve ocuk
dostu kentler olarak yeniden ina edebiliriz.
