THE BODY

ACTIONS
Last lesson we explored symbols and their use on jewellery designs.
This lesson we will be creating our own symbols on Adobe Illustrator to place on our pendant projects.
Ask students:
What is Adobe Illustrator?
How could Adobe Illustrator be used in the design industry as part of the design process?
Explain to students:
You will each be creating 3 drawings and cutting them out on the laser cutter in cardboard, these are your
protypes
Can anyone define a prototype. A prototype is a first or original model which is usually further developed.
Demonstrate Illustrator:
You file should be in RGB mode - Open a new file, select advanced, RGB, ok and then copy and paste your design
into the RGB file page
To open RGB colour swatches Window (top bar), colour swatches, then you will see a colour swatches box pop
up, click on the small page looking icon on the bottom of that box (this opens new colour swatch groups), scroll to
default, clic RGB.
All cut lines to made RGB red = 255 (the first red in the RGB colour swatches)
All etched lines to be black (the first black in the RGB colour swatches)
Select all lines and make the stroke thickness 0.001
Ensure all lines are joined up and no gaps remain in your design
If you would like your design to be symmetrical you draw one side first and then with the black cursor select
around your entire design, right click and group, select around your entire design again, go to transform, reflect,
tick the copy box and decide if you are reflecting horizontally or vertically.
Ensure none of the shapes on your design have a fill on them
To curve lines which you have drawn with the line tool, you can add anchor points to your line and then use the
anchor point tool which is under the pen tool option to grab each anchor point and curve it
For any lines which will be in red they must have been drawn with the line or shape tool (not the pen tool) The
pen tool will only work for etching.
Once your design is complete and approved it needs to be merged together to become and object, select the
whole person (it will turn blue), select window (top menu bar), select pathfinder tool, select the first option in the
pathfinder tool, the 2 square that are on top of each other. Your shape WILL NOT merge if the shapes are not
overlapping each other. YOU CANNOT make changes once it is merged; make sure your design is perfect.
Students to begin drawing
Period 2 - Demonstrate the laser cutter

CONCLUSION

Save your Illustrator drawings and we will continue drawing next lesson. For homework complete your on guard safety
tests so you can use the laser cutter next lesson.
