1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
-not as exciting as depicted in movies
-isnt always a trauma patient that needs attention
-a lot of patients that come in with concerns they should actually take to their primary care physician
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
-4 years of college
-4 years of medical school
-3-4 years of residency
-board certification tests need to be renewed every ten years
-other certification tests such as resuscitation also need to be renewed
-frequently attend conferences, workshops, etc.

3. What parts of your job do you find most challenging? What tough decisions have you had to
make?
-social issues most challenging, medical part is easy
- for example, prescribing a medication you know a patient doesnt have the insurance to pay for
-elderly patients that will need help and care, family unwilling to cooperate
-being unable to help a patient beyond just the medical aspect

-Very secure
-healthcare industry and emergency medicine specifically is growing
-in todays society, people want immediate care/results
-there will always be emergencies, accidents, etc
-overall bright future

-fellowships to further specialize
-diversify your knowledge through self-interest
-can go into hospital administration
-undergo more training
-already pretty high up, growth would simply consist of diversifying
7. Why do people leave this field or specialty?
-stressful job
-dealing with many different patients at the same time
-unexpected problems, never know what a patient will come in with
-have to be able to treat everything, cant refer to other specialist because you dont deal with a specific
problem
-ER has a high burn-out ratio

8. What sorts of changed do you notice occurring in the ER? What has changed?
-technology is advancing
-more tests are available
-results come back faster
-there is a push for patient satisfaction in hospitals

-multi-tasking
-teamwork
-good at procedures
-curious personality

-makes you appreciate being healthy
-seeing all the different problems people are going through (medical and social) makes you more
humble
-lose a lot of friends, because of the time healthcare/ER demands
-cant keep in touch with them or do things together
