AFib Awareness Month Aims To Educate

(NAPSA)An irregular heartbeat, called atrial fibrillation or
AFib, increases your risk of stroke
by five timesbut there are steps
you can take. AFib affects more
than 2.7 million Americans, many
over age 60. To help, during September, National AFib Awareness
Month, the American Heart Association is teaching those at highest risk how to spot and manage
AFib to avoid stroke.
AFib can have symptoms such
as an irregular-feeling heartbeat,
shortness of breath and lightheadedness, or it can have no
symptoms at all, says Patrick T.
Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., director of
the Cardiac Arrhythmia Service at
Massachusetts General Hospital.
Stroke risks are increased
because when the heart is in AFib,
it is not moving blood effectively.
Blood pools and clots can form.
When the clot is pumped out of
the heart, it can travel to the
brain and cause a stroke.
Thats what happened to Carl
Romero of New Jersey. Four years
ago, while working out with his
son, Romero, now 48, experienced
an erratic heartbeat and pounding
in his chest. That led him to his
doctors, who diagnosed him with
AFib. Seven months later, he went
on to have a stroke. The experience opened his eyes about the
need for major lifestyle changes.

Feeding the butteries

Gardeners abhor
weeds. We patrol our
gardens for them. We
pull them with a vengeance. But, if we want
to attract butterflies,
we may have to learn to
live with a few. Namely,
stiff goldenrod, milkweed, clover, nettles,
mustards, mints peppermint in particular,
and thistles. Well, maybe
not thistles and nettles.
There is a limit to our
tolerance after all. And
the mints need to be
tightly corralled or they
will take over the world
in a very short time.
One thing that may
surprise you is that
some butterflies need
trees for their larvae
to feed on. These, in
particular, are the Tiger
Swallowtail, Mourning
Cloak, the tiny Blues,
the Viceroy - the Monarch pretender, and the
White Admiral. They all
like willows and poplars. The poplar family
includes cottonwoods
and aspens. These
are not most peoples
favorite yard trees.
They tend to be messy,
shedding branches and
twigs at the slightest
breeze, exploding with
cotton in the spring,
and attempting to make
a grove out of themselves by sending up
new saplings as far as
their roots reach. There
are so-called cottonless
cottonwoods; however,
experience tells us that
eventually, if there is a
regular cottonwood in
the county, it will sneak
over to your so-called
sterile tree and induce
it to start producing
cotton too. It may take
years, but they all seem
to give in eventually.
Unfortunately, willow is another tree many
of these butterflies use
for larvae food. These

have similar bad habits

to the poplars. They
throw branches around
in the breeze and bloom
with cotton attached to
their seeds in the spring,
adding to summer cleanup of window screens,
the air conditioner, and
the exterior of roughsided homes. About the
only two willows that
add enough interest to
our estates that most
people will put up with
are the weeper, which
adds an interesting
shape and a great place
for the kids to play under, and the fire willow
with its bright stems.
More acceptable
trees for most people are
birch, elm, cherry, and
plum. Chokecherries are
a nicely shaped tree that
not only feed the butterfly larvae, but birds
later in the fall. The fruit
makes great jelly and
wine, too. Both it and the
plum are susceptible to
black knot, the fungus
that makes a glob on
a branch that looks as
though your cat has used
it for a litterbox. This has
aptly been called poop
on a stick. It is easily
controlled by removing
the affected branch and

burning or bagging it.

The Blues like
dogwoods, another nice
landscape tree. The
Hummingbird Sphinx
moth is a bit of a diva as
she looks for snowberry
and viburnum shrubs,
but will put up with the
cherry and plum family.
There are plants
that most gardeners are
happy to plant for their
butterflies to feed their
larvae on: parsley, the
legumes - like peas, snapdragons, sedum, verbena,
everlastings, hollyhock
purtulaca, heliotrope.
Others are hated by the
grass-only lawn lovers.
Clover comes to mind.
There are many plusses
to white clover. It feeds
the bees in the spring,
adds nitrogen to the
soil, is short so needs
little mowing, and is a
food for butterfly larvae.
