Equipment Description

Chapter 1 Equipment Description

This chapter presents a general description of the Version 3 (V3) LMU and associated
equipment.

1.1 LMU Technical Description

The Location Measurement Unit (LMU) is a digital receiver unit that makes measurements on a
mobile uplink RF signal in order to aid in a location computation. Multiple LMU units work
together as coordinated by the Geolocation Control System (GCS) to locate a mobile.
V3 LMU units are available in two basic models with multiple options: 2-channel and 4-channel..
Two channel LMUs are used for 2-antenna input Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) processing.
This is the most common unit installed. Four channel units are used for Angle of Arrival (AOA)
processing. Additional options include European frequency bands and CDMA processing
capability. All units are GSM capable and include Wide Range ( 24/48 VDC) power supplies.
Note:

The 4-channel TDOA version is not currently offered, but may be added in the future
depending on customer requirements.

V3 LMU model numbers are designated as follows:

LMU2- PEM
Channel Options:
2 = 2 Channel
4 = 4 Channel
GeoProxy Option:
P = Private Label Version,
Blank = Standard Version
Frequency Band Options:
E = 900/1800 MHz (European) Bands;
Blank = 850/1900 (North American) Bands
CDMA Options:
M = CDMA Mezzanine Installed
Blank = No CDMA
The V3 LMU is typically installed in an existing base station. It mounts in a base station 19 or
23 rack, and connects to the base station power, receive antenna system, MSC communications
(via CSU/DSU or provisioned E1 DS0) and alarm systems. A GPS antenna is required for LMU
time synchronization and a BCCH sense antenna for GSM frame synchronization. AOA LMUs
require the installation of separate receive antennas, switches and associated RF conditioning
hardware. Figure 1-1 illustrates typical V3 LMU base station connections.

For modular-cell, micro-cell, or outdoor shelter installations, a self-contained environmentally
protected enclosure is available. The outdoor enclosure is designed for flexible mounting options
including on top of an existing enclosure, the side of a shelter, or to an existing pole.
The two-channel V3 LMU incorporates 12 dual-band RF input ports and an internal switching
matrix, making the use of an external band combiner at co-located dual-band installations (e.g.
PCS overlay) unnecessary. Dual band combiners at existing installations may continue to be
used with the V3 LMU.
The four-channel V3 LMU has 4 dual-band RF ports and employs an external switching matrix to
select the appropriate antenna combinations for AOA or TDOA processing.
The LMU front panel is shown in Figure 1-2 below, and Table 1-1 identifies the front panel LED
indicators.

Figure 1-2 V3 LMU Front Panel

In addition to the LED indicators, an RS-232 connector is provided for GCS port configuration and
local diagnostics (duplicating the rear panel RS-232 connector), as well as an access panel for
Andrew factory test..

1.2 GPS Antenna

In base stations where a GPS antenna does not exist or is not available, a new GPS antenna
must be installed. The V3 LMU can provide up to 100 mA of +5 VDC power to the antenna port
for powering an active antenna.
If the site has an existing GPS antenna (e.g. CDMA site) a GPS splitter is installed. The splitter
passes DC from the base station GPS receiver to the base station GPS antenna as normal. DC
power from the LMU is blocked at the splitter.
Figure 1-5 shows a typical GPS antenna splitter.

1.3 AOA Installations

AOA installations require panel antennas separate from the normal receive antennas, and thus
require their own preamps and signal conditioning. The RFDU (Radio Frequency Distribution
Unit) is a set of four filter amplifiers designed to support AOA installations. See Section 2.8.2,
and Appendix B AOA Antennas for details.

Chapter 2 Installation
This chapter details the step-by-step procedures for installation of a new V3 LMU unit.
Procedures should be followed in the order presented.

2.1 Pre-Planning
Prior to beginning an installation, the following base station items should be in place:

19 or 23 Rack Space 1.75 (1U) of vertical space for the V3 LMU. For AOA
installations an additional 7 (4U) is required for the RFDU and 1.75 (1U) for the Antenna
Switch or Tower Mounted Switch controller unit as applicable.

24 VDC or -48 VDC Power One dedicated circuit breaker or fuse (5 Amp minimum)
tagged for the LMU equipment. For AOA installations, an additional 5 Amp breaker/fuse
is required for the RFDU (24 VDC only). Andrew Corporation outdoor enclosures require
a separate 20A breaker/fuse.

GCS Communications Port One V.35 CSU/DSU port or one T1/E1 RJ48C connection
via the BTS, provisioned and actively cross-connected to the GCS. One full-time 56k/64k
DS0 connection, provisioned from the LMU to the GCS is required.

Multi-coupler ports (TDOA only) One receive multi-coupler port per receive diversity
antenna (e.g. total of six ports for a single band three sector diversity antenna site). The
receive port shall have net signal gain at the LMU input of between +10dB and +15dB.
The maximum signal input to the LMU is 0dBm. For a dual-band site, multi-coupler ports
for each receive antenna on each BTS multi-coupler (i.e. cellular and PCS) are required.
For sites employing single diversity antennas, unused diversity antenna ports on the LMU
should be terminated with a 50-ohm load.

AOA antenna(s) (AOA ONLY) Antenna panel(s) mounted on the tower/building and
cabled into the base station shelter RFDU, either directly or via a Tower Mounted Switch.

GPS Antenna A new GPS antenna installed or existing antenna access via a GPS
splitter terminating on a N-type female connector. Note that the LMU GPS receiver
requires a minimum net signal gain of +10dB, with a recommended net gain of +18dB.
The GPS antenna should be located to provide a minimum of 4-satellite visibility and a
C/I greater than 70dB.

BCCH Antenna (GSM only) One LMU access point to receive all BTS GSM Forward
Broadcast Control Channel (BCCH) signals. This may be via an interior whip antenna,
an exterior whip antenna, or via monitor or coupler ports on the BTS. If monitor or
coupler ports are utilized, and if the BCCH signals are different between sectors, the
sector BTS signals should be summed to a single cable for connection to the LMU.
Signal levels at the LMU shall be maintained between 40dBm and -90dBm.

Chassis Grounding One ground connection location in the LMU equipment rack.

Alarm Termination (if applicable) One set of terminals on alarm panel tagged for LMU
equipment.

2.8.2

AOA Installations

In the case of AOA, a Radio Frequency Distribution Unit (RFDU) is required to provide the signal
filtering and conditioning normally performed in the multi-coupler. If only one AOA panel is used,
connect the four antenna cables directly to the four RFDU input ports (A1 IN through A4 IN) as
shown in Figure 2-8. For multiple AOA panels, an external antenna selector switch is required,
either mounted to the RFDU or close to the antenna panels using a Tower Mounted Switch. The
four cables from each panel are connected to the appropriate sector inputs (A1-A4, B1-B4 and
C1-C4), and the output cables OUT 1 through OUT 4 are connected to the RFDU input ports A1
IN through A4 IN respectively. The RFDU output ports A1 OUT through A4 OUT connect to the
corresponding LMU antenna input ports (ANT 1 through ANT 4). Figure 2-9 illustrates the multiple
AOA panel configuration.
For AOA installations, an RF calibration source for AOA panels is provided in the LMU. Attach the
AOA panel calibration source cable to the LMU rear panel SMA female CAL SOURCE connector.
For multiple panel AOA installations, connect the calibration source cables from each panel and
from the LMU to the calibration source splitter as shown in Figure 2-9 (Note, the tower mounted
switch includes a cal source splitter).
Depending on the number of AOA panels used, not all ports on the switch may need to be
connected.
Where both TDOA and AOA are employed at the same site, attenuators are required at the
TDOA inputs to the switch to compensate for the added gain of the RFDU. See Figure 2-10.

2.9 GSM BCCH Antenna Cabling (GSM only)

In GSM base station installations the LMU requires a forward channel RF signal connection for
BCCH synchronization. The V3 LMU BCCH port may be connected to an interior whip antenna,
an exterior whip antenna, or a BTS monitor port (existing or via an installed directional coupler).
Signal levels at the LMU shall be maintained between -40dBm and -90dBm. One cable shall be
provided to the LMU. If separate BCCH monitor ports are used for each sector, the sector signals
shall be summed together (e.g. using a 3x1 splitter) to a single RF cable for input to the LMU.
Connect the BCCH antenna cable to the QMA female BCCH port on the rear of the LMU.

2.10 GCS T1/E1 Port Setup

For LMU's that connect to the GCS via the T1/E1 port, the port must be configured for the
correct line interface and DS0 selection. This is done via the RS-232 port on either the
front or rear of the LMU. It is assumed the installer has a general knowledge of basic
PC operation.

Diagnostics & Verification

A software utility is run on the LMU to verify the installation. It is assumed the installer/tester has
a general knowledge of basic PC operation.
The software will perform a comprehensive check of LMU hardware, WAN connectivity, and
external cabling. Results will be presented in a simple pass/fail manner not requiring the user to
interpret any data. A series of tests will be initiated each displaying a PASS/FAIL indicator and
then a summary PASS/FAIL result will be displayed.
1. The following procedure applies to diagnostic tests run via the LMU front or rear panel
RS-232 connection or remotely via remote a telnet connection into the LMU. To
accomplish the latter, steps 4 and 5 may be replaced by executing telnet <IP address>
from a GCS command prompt. The LMU <IP address> may be obtained from the GCS
Network Management System LMU site detail screen.
2. Access to LMU diagnostics is also available via the NMS GUI as an alternative to telnet
sessions. After diagnostics is started from the NMS, the results are reported back to the
GCS and stored in a database. For information on NMS-based diagnostics, consult the
Network Management Users Guide, MN-GEO-UG-01.
The diagnostic software will not adversely affect the LMU when executed immediately following
initial LMU power-up.

Noise Test for CELLULAR B band: PASS

The test is run over two frequency bands: EGSM900 and DCS1800 band with a results table
similar to that above displayed for each band. Each test within the specified band is run ten times
(denoted by the iteration column above).
The test is a measure of BPU channel correlation when the same signal is injected into each of
the two channels on the BPU. The measure of correlation (listed in the test results as Rho) must
be greater than 0.98 to pass for Cellular band tests, and greater than 0.96 for DCS band tests.
The difference in the thresholds is due to lower signal source power in the DCS band, thus the
correlation between channels will be lower.
The RSSI is also measured on each channel (listed as pow_ch1 (dBm) and pow_ch2 (dBm)) and
must be greater than -105dBm to pass. In addition, the measured time difference between the
channels must be less than 50 nanoseconds (shown in the TOAdiff(ns) column in the table). This
is a short duration test only, and does not reflect the measurement accuracy obtained under
operational conditions, where measurement times are significantly longer.
After the test has completed over all three frequency bands, an overall test result summary table
will be displayed similar to the one shown below:

file (bpu.ini) on the LMU. In the above example table, only the cellular frequency bands are
required to pass the test. The overall test result is pass only if all required bands pass the test.
It is important to note that for a two channel LMU or a four channel TDOA LMU the test must pass
for all bands, regardless of the band in which the LMU will be used under normal operation.
Multicouplers and filters external to the LMU will have no impact on the results of this test. This is
not the case for four channel AOA LMUs, which are typically configured with an external switch
followed by an external RFDU. In this case only the RF band passed by the RFDU is required to
pass the test, since all other bands will be rejected by the RFDU filtering.
On a two channel LMU , failure of any of these tests would indicate an internal LMU fault
somewhere between the antenna switch and the BPU. These units should be returned for repair.
On a four channel AOA LMU, there is typically an external switch connected prior to an RFDU,
which then connects to the LMU with RF jumper cables as shown in Figure 2-12. There is also a
control cable that runs from the LMU to the external switch. If the noise correlation test fails,
check the following items:

Verify that the RFDU is powered on and that the green power light on the front of the
RFDU is illuminated.
Verify that the control cable between the LMU and the external switch is connected.
Verify that all jumper cables between the external switch and the RFDU are properly
connected.
Verify that all jumper cables between the RFDU and the LMU are properly connected.

If necessary, the AOA LMU fault may be further isolated by bypassing the RFDU (i.e., cabling the
antenna switch directly to the LMU) and re-running the test. If all of the above checks show no
problems with the physical installation or the RFDU, then the LMU should be returned for repair.

Failure of the GPS test could indicate a GPS antenna, GPS cable or GPS splitter fault, all
external to the LMU, which would require repair. The test could also indicate a fault in the GPS
receiver internal to the LMU, which should be returned for repair.
To verify proper GPS antenna, cable and splitter operation, a sweep test can be performed using
the Garmin GPS-3 Test Set.
GPS frequencies to sweep for are:

L1 Band frequency: 1575.42 MHz

L2 Band frequency: 1227.6 MHz

AOA Calibration Test (Test 7)

AOA capability is not currently available on the V3 LMU. This test is not currently supported
2.11.8

RF Cabling Test (Test 8)

The RF Cabling Test detects the presence of an external amplifier, such as a multicoupler, prior
to the LMU. This test is used primarily to validate that the RF jumper cables between the
multicoupler and the LMU are physically installed, and that the multicoupler is actively amplifying.
This test does not verify the connection of antennas to the inputs of the multicoupler, nor does it
determine if the RF jumper cables are misconnected between channels or sectors. Also, in
release 5.3.7 and later, this test does not attempt to determine which RF bands are being filtered
within the multicoupler.
The test runs over multiple frequency bands, and does not require that there be active calls in the
bands being tested. Each properly cabled LMU port should pass each test regardless of band.
For example, if the LMU is connected to a cellular A-band multicoupler, the test will normally
indicate a pass condition for measurements in all RF bands, including cellular A, B, PCS, and
iDen. This is because thermal noise generated within the multicoupler broadband amplifier is not
affected by input band filtering. In the absence of any RF signal inputs to the multicoupler, the RF
spectrum output over all bands should be relatively uniform, with the level being determined by
the amplifier noise figure and gain.
Note:

32

In this test, the signal levels shown are not true RSSI, or received signal strength at the
antenna, as it does not account for any gains prior to the LMU. It will only be an accurate
assessment of RSSI if the there is no external amplification applied during the test.

The RF Cabling Test determines that a cable is connected to the LMU if, averaging over all
bands:

The minimum average signal level is greater than -109dBm, or

The maximum average signal level is above -104dBm.

The test software determines which LMU input ports are required to be connected based on the
LMU bpu.ini file. The test result will be PASS if all required LMU inputs are connected.
Otherwise the test result will be FAIL. Possible causes for a failure are also displayed.
2.11.9

V.35 LoopbackTest (Test 9)

The V.35 Loopback Test is used to verify a V.35/DS0 connection from the LMU to the GCS
located at the MSC. The test can also check for the presence of a GCS link loopback, either via
the CSU/DSU in loopback mode or via a LMU V.35 port loopback plug.
Note:

This test requires access to the LMU unit through the front or rear panel RS-232 serial
port. It cannot be run remotely via the NMS GUI.

The V.35 Loopback Test will send a test pattern toward the GCS. If it is returned successfully
then the DS0 connection is determined to be operational. An example of the test display is
shown below.

Press ENTER to continue

Failure of the V.35 Loopback test indicates a lack of end-to-end connectivity between the LMU
and the GCS. Failure may indicate a fault in CSU/DSU provisioning or port configuration, a fault
in the E1 DACS connections, a LMU V.35 port cable failure or problems within the carrier E1
network. Additional loopback tests should be performed at various locations along the E1 signal
chain to isolate the fault. This test requires that personnel be located at the LMU site to
add/remove loopback connectors. If the test is run remotely (e.g. via telnet) the connection to the
LMU is generally made via the GCS port, thus validating its operation and this test does not need
to be run.
Testing the LMU V.35 port requires a female DB-25 loopback plug be put on the LMU rear DB-25
port. The pinout and connections for the V.35 loopback plug are shown below.

AOA RFDU and Antenna Switch

Appendix A AOA RFDU and Antenna Switch

AOA installations require panel antennas separate from the normal receive antennas, and thus
require their own preamps and signal conditioning. The RFDU (Radio Frequency Distribution
Unit) is a set of four filter amplifiers designed to provide this support for AOA installations.
For sites employing a single AOA panel, the panel connects directly to the RFDU. For sites
employing multiple AOA panels, an external antenna switch, either local or tower mounted,
provides the ability to connect up to three AOA panels to a single RFDU. Power and control for
the external switch is provided by the LMU via the Antenna Control connector.
See Appendix B for a description of AOA Antennas.
