• Debates over slavery – Wilmot Proviso (1846), FreeSoil Party
• Wilmot P. – would have forbidden slavery in any territory
acquired in the Mexican-A. War … THIS WAS A
PROBLEM!!!
• Compromise of 1850 fixed this … Temporarily anyway!

• Compromise of 1850 determined how newly acquired
land would enter the Union – popular sovereignty
