TheEliteBookFolio1040G3isacomparativelysmallupdateoveritspredecessor.Thebiggest
changeistheupdatetoIntel'scurrentSkylakeplatform,butweonlygetsomenewports
otherwise.OurtestmodelwiththedesignationV1B14EAisawellequippedmodelforahefty
2,600Euros(~$2976).Contrarytotherivals,however,wedonotgetaCorei7,butaCorei5
processorincombinationwith16GBDDR4RAMaswellasafastNVMeSSD.Oneofthe
highlightsiscertainlythematteWQHDpanel.HPalsotookcareaboutmobileInternetconnections
becauseyoualsogetaSIMcard(HPMobileConnect)besidestheintegratedLTEmodem.Users
get200MBfreeeverymonthforthreeyearsyoucanbookotherdataplansonaprepaidbasisin
othercountries(noroamingfees).
TheEliteBookFolio1040G3isvirtuallyalonewithsuchahighpricetag.Thebiggestrivalis
certainlythecurrentLenovoThinkPadX1Carbon,whichusesaverysimilarconcept.However,it
isabout600Euros(~$687)lessexpensiveinasimilarconfiguration.Wearethereforeeagerto
seeiftheFolio1040G3canjustifyitsprice.Wewillalsocomparethethinnotebookwithits
predecessorFolio1040G2,the"normal"EliteBook840G3andotherproducts
fromDellandLenovo.

ThebasicchassisconstructionoftheHPEliteBookFolio1040G3didnotchangeinitsthird
iteration:Westillgetaveryelegantandrestrainedcase,whichcanbeeasilyintegratedin
productiveenvironments.Silvercoloredmetalsurfacesaredominanttheyhavealuxuriousfeel
andfingerprintsarenotabigproblem.Thebottomcoverisslightlyrubberized,whichimprovesthe
grip.Onlythekeyboardaswellasthemattedisplayframeareblackandcreateafittingcontrast.
Wecanseeasmalldifferenceatthetopofthelid:Whilethepredecessorshadacontrasting
surface,wenowgetsimilartosomemodernsmartphonesonlyasmallcontrastingstripe.It
probablycoverstheantennasfortheWWANmodule.
Wewouldcallthestabilityofthebaseunitgood,eventhoughthereiscertainlysomeroomfor
improvements.Forstarters,wecanslightlytwistthebaseunit,whichwillcreatesomeminor
creaking.Therightkeyboardareainparticularcanbewarpedprettyeasily,whichisalso
noticeableduringtyping.Thethinlidcanasexpectedalsobeslightlytwisted,butthe
performanceisstillgood.Pressurefrombehindinparticularisnoproblemforthelid,andwecould
notprovokepicturedistortions,either.Thecentralhingehasabsolutelynoproblemwiththelight
displaybecauseitissmoothandatthesametimesufficientlytaughttopreventbouncing.Thereis
absolutelynocriticismforthebuildquality:Allpartsareassembledperfectly,andtheadditional
buttonsarewellintegrated.ThechassiswastestedaccordingtothemilitarystandardsMILSTD
810G(includeshumidity,temperaturesdustetc.)andthekeyboardissplashresistant.
Withathicknessofjust15.8millimeters(~0.62in),thetestdeviceisevenslightlythinnerthan
theX1CarbonfromLenovo(16.5mm/~0.65in),whilethelatterhasasmalladvantageinrespect
ofthefootprintandtheweight.200grams(7oz)mightnotbealot,butitisstillanimpressive
achievementonthislevel.

Keyboard
Atfirstglance,theblackchicletkeyboarddidnotchangecomparedtothepredecessor.However,
thisisonlythecaseforthedesign,becausethekeysofthethirdgenerationnowhaveaslightly
longertravel.ThetypingexperienceisactuallyverysimilartothemuchbiggersiblingHPZBook
15G3.WhilewethinkHPwastedsomepotentialforthefullfledgedworkstation,theinputdevice
isverygoodforsuchathindevice.Thestrokeisfairlysoftandslightlyabsorbed,whichresultsin
lownoisedevelopmentwithoutaffectingthefeedback.Frequentwritersshouldbesatisfiedwiththe
inputaswell.SimilartoalltheothercurrentHPnotebooks,theverticalarrowkeysareverysmall
andthereforetrickytouse.Thetwostagewhiteilluminationautomaticallyturnsoffbydefaultwhen
youdonottypeforawhile.

HerewecanfindanotherimportantdifferencetotheotherdevicesfromtheEliteBookseries
becauseHPonceagaindispensedwiththePointStickfortheFolio1040G3.Thismeansyoucan
onlyusetheClickPadforcursormovements,whichdoesnothavededicatedbuttons.Thesmooth
surfaceprovidesgoodglidingcapabilities,butsmallermovementsinparticulararenotalways
executedveryaccurately.Multitouchgestureslikescrollingorpinchtozoomontheotherhand
werenoproblem.ThelowerareaoftheClickPadcanbeclicked,whichisveryreliable.The
clickingsoundisnottooclattery,andwedidnotexperienceissueswithunwantedcursor
movements.
