Preferred Implementations

for the water industry

Automation
solutions for
water treatment
and pumping

Building a New Electr

World

The goal you pursue

... is to supply your users with the right
volume of high quality water
To succeed in this task you need:
n a standardised automated process solution adapted
to water treatment requirements
n a comprehensive solution allowing complete
integration, from supervision to instrumentation
n an open flexible and upgradeable solution adapted
to the water cycle
n a reliable solution composed of products specially
adapted to your water installations
n a solution that enables you to comply with the main
water standards.

"Preferred Implementations"
... of generic automation architectures
for your treatment plants and remote sites
Each implementation satisfies a coherent
and uniform set of customer values and needs in terms
of automation processes:
n time savings at the design stage
n time savings at the commissioning stage
n quality assurance
n ease of maintenance and revamping of existing
installations
n optimisation of training costs.
Schneider Electric provides water industry players
with a solution adapted to each application:
n waste water treatment plants:

v for 5,000 inhabitants

v for 50,000 inhabitants
v for 200,000 inhabitants
v for 1,000,000 inhabitants or more.
n drinking water treatment plants:
v 2,000 m3/day
v 20,000 m3/day
v 100,000 m3/day
v > 500,000 m3/day.
n remote sites:
v pumping stations
v lifting stations
v reservoirs
v booster stations.
n multi-site management:
v co-ordination of several treatment plants
v co-ordination of several remote sites.

architectures that change according

to the complexity of the process
The "Preferred Implementations" take into account
the different levels of complexity of the process:

The "Preferred
Implementations"
proposed by
Schneider Electric
should cover
most automation
applications of the
different processes.

The complexity of waste water treatment

is illustrated by means of the different phases making
up the treatment process: lifting, screening, primary
treatment, settling basin, biological treatment, chemical
treatment and waste treatment.
The complexity of drinking water treatment
depends on the quality level of the incoming water.
More over, the environmental constraints (plant size, air
pollution) and the quality required for the drinking water
(taste, hardness, clearness) also affect the process.

A reliable product range adapted to your

treatment automation needs and providing
control of pumping:
n W@de, remote terminal unit
The range consists of compact or modular remote management
units based on industrial PLCs:
v continuous measurement, recording, processing, archiving
of installations operating parameters
v communication between sites and to a supervisor or web server
v remote configuration and operation (direct alert to maintenance
personnel).
n Unity Application Generator (UAG)
v the Unity Application Generator and its library of objects dedicated
to water applications enables you to optimise supervision and
control of your installations
v the water object library gives you a comprehensive view of your
installations process and enables you to improve maintenance and
operation of your treatment plant
v UAG is designed to optimise the whole of your cost structure
(training, qualification, implementation of your solution, etc.) and
encouraging considerable time savings in all your project phases,
from design to operation.
n Premium Hot Standby system
Enables you to meet requirements for availability at lowest possible
cost. The main component of the system is a second PLC called
a Standby PLC with an identical configuration to the Primary
one, placed in standby position. To constantly monitor the status
of the Primary PLC, the Standby PLC uses a specific high speed
optic fibre connection and a redundant connection.
If there is a fault on the Primary PLC, the system automatically
controls the switchover to the Standby PLC.
It ensures:
v greater availability of your treatment plants and remote stations
v optimisation of your installation and running costs.
n ATV 61 (equipped with "water solution" card)
It controls:
v detection of excess pressure and negative pressure
v running dry detection
v management of pump groups making it possible to keep control
of your energy bill.

The water distribution network requires booster stations to provide

the right water pressure.
The difference between the discharge pressure and the set point controls
whether a pump is started up (or shut down).
The booster application must control automatic pump changeover and
switches automatically from one pump to another in the event of a failure.
The use of variable speed drive also prevents water hammer.

An efficient management of your small-distributed drinking water

plant with Modicon M340
The process associated to T1 preferred implementation for drinking water
treatment plants is often simplified. According to the incoming water quality
(Ex: water coming from the mountain, or groundwater) treatment phases
are reduced. For groundwater a simple filtration process with some chemical
treatment should be enough. The main problem in this type of architecture
is the management of all the T1 distributed drinking water treatment plants
in order to supply a unique place. T1 architecture is perfectly adapted to such
constraints and guarantees an efficient remote management of your installation.

TESYS model U combines both motor starter and control functions.
This flexibility allows control of all types of motors and pumps in the
different steps of a drinking water treatment.
For instance during
1 - Raw water pumping, Tesys U manages efficiently different pumps and
provides pumps management information.
2 - Screening in case of surface water to remove large debris.
Tesys-U is used to control the bar screen motor.
3 - Coagulation/sedimentation/flocculation.
To extract the heavy particles settled in the bottom.
Several motors controllers with Tesys-U are needed to manage mixers,
scraper or rotators.
4 - Filtration: to allow the water passing through filters that help to remove
smaller particles, and to control the filters backwash
5 - Disinfecting to manage the dosing pump and therefore the amount
of chlorine to be added to kill bacteria and microorganisms.
6 - Distribution: to control the pump needed to store Water in tank
or reservoir before distribution to customers.
7 - Sludge: to control mixers, thickeners and digesters needed in slugde
treatment.

The biological treatment (7) of a T3 wastewater plant is a critical step,

it can combines several tanks using 2 types of processing:
Either a 3 step biologic treatment:
- Phosphate elimination (anoxia)
- De-nitrification (anaerobic)
- Nitrification (aerobic)
Or 1 step treatment with activated sludge
In all cases the Premium Hot standby will allow having a high quality
processing.
In the same way the primary lifting process (1), the sand removal (2),
the primary clarifier (5), the secondary clarifier (8), or the sludge
thickeners (11) and digesters (12) are critical path, therefore
the Hoststandby capability increases their availabilities.

The largest drinking water treatment plants are often characterised by a large
number of controllers that manage the process (up to 100) and several hundred
of field devices such as variable speed drives and I/O modules. The filtration
process (steps 5 and 7), for instance, can be split in several treatment lines
depending on the filtration technic used: Microfiltration, Ultrafiltration,
Nanofiltration or Reverse Osmosis. In the same way, the sedimentation
treatment (4), the distribution process (9) or the sludge treatment (10 and 11),
can be structured in several process lines. Vijeo Citect solution provides
continuous 24-hour, 7 days per week monitoring of treatment process to
help identify quality failures or contamination. An efficient supervision tool
such as Vijeo Citect is mandatory to manage such complex architectures.

Dedicated to very large sized wastewater treatment plants

T4 implementation is a complete solution for a large urban area from 500 000 up
to 1 million and more inhabitants. It combines several Premium TSX57 and
Modicon M340 controllers, a redundant SCADA VijeoCitect, a dual Ethernet
ring and a remote access to lifting stations. A T4 implementation is able to
manage a large number of equipments and advanced treatment.
Each controller is in charge of managing a process line of one functional
unit (for instance 5 primary clarifiers of the 20 clarifiers of a plant).
This implementation is a real solution ensuring a complete integration
of your installation from SCADA to instrumentation. The engineering cost
is reduced thanks to Unity Application Generator software and its dedicated
water objects library that allows integrating multiple PLCs and HMI/SCADA
systems.

On the field
A large wastewater plant requires a significant engineering cost to design
the process of huge numbers of equipment, motors, valves and pumps.
Advanced processes are more and more used for biological treatment,
chemical treatment and for sludge treatment and valuation.
Several process lines managing one functional unit characterize
T4 architecture. Each line is under responsability of dedicated controller.
The UAG water librarys object approach is particularly adapted to such
complex architecture. It enables you to optimize the design and the
commissioning of your wastewater treatment. The high flexibility provided
by UAG water library allows you to freely extend and modify your
wastewater treatment installation by adding a new primary clarifier line (5),
biological process line (7) secondary clarifier line (8) or a new sludge
thickener (11) process line.
