Common Core Standards in

2011
Students are required to learn how to read and
understand literature

A few of these standards for English students

11-12 grades. These standards are designed
to help students become college ready

that skill in everyday life. Real world

examples of word choice and language use
will be encouraged, if not required.

Key Ideas and Details Standard

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

Standard

As stated in this standard, students are

expected to be able to cite sources effectively
as evidence of their thesis. This is an
important standard because citing sources
evidence is an important and crucial part of
writing. In my future classroom, the goal will
be that the common question, should we
cite? will not be asked because students
should ALWAYS cite their sources.
Craft and Structure Standard
This standard involves the understanding
and analysis of language. This skill can only
come with practice. It is important for
students to recognize the impact of word
choice on the piece that they are reading. In
my future classroom, I will encourage my
students to not only to understand and
analyze the use of language in the literature
that we will be reading in class, but also use
that skill in everyday life

This standard requires students to analyze

how the material is presented and how that
particular presentation affects the way the
piece is interpreted. One English class I
attended in high school, we were required to
read The Crucible. Because of this standard,
we read it in comic book form and analyzed
how the author used that medium to tell the
story. I plan to do the same thing in the
classroom by introducing students to
multiple mediums of presentation of
literature. It doesnt have to be a comic book,
but it should be quite different than just the
text.
