Pre-test and Post-test Reasoning


One of the most important aspects of English 9 FC class is teaching students to
comprehend important details in texts. One of the main objectives students aimed for during The
Odyssey unit was to remember and associate with important people and places from the graphic
novel. The students were issued a pre-test to check their knowledge of any of these famous
people and places. Once we were done reading the book in class, students were given the
weekend to study and then they were given a more comprehensive unit test. To be clear, every
question that was on the pre-test was also on the post-test, though there were ten additional
questions on the post-test. When compiling my data I only recorded scores regarding those
fifteen questions given on both the pre-test and post-test. My reason for doing this is that I did
not simply want students to have a biased understanding of questions simply because they had
seen them before. Below are the results of the pre-test and post-test that students took.

Reflection
The growth students showed between taking the Pre-test and the Post-test were
phenomenal! The single highest score on the Pre-test was a 66% while on the Post-test it was a
100%. Three of the eighteen student completed the Post-test with a perfect score, showing that
multiple students grew to the maximum amount possible regarding the questions. Additionally,
the lowest score on the Pre-test was a 0% but on the Post-test the lowest score was a 6%. This
shows that even the students who failed the pre-test grew a lot from where they started.
Perhaps the most significant number is the average (mean) score that the class scored on
the Pre-test compared to the Post-test. The Pre-test average was a 23%(3.5/15). This number told
us that some students did know some of the more well-known terms, while other students had
never encountered them before. The Post-test average shot up to an 81% (12.2/15). This means
the class average increased by a whopping 58%. That is an incredible amount of growth and this
can be more concretely viewed in the bar graph above.

Overall, I was very impressed and almost astonished at how well students did
comparatively from the Pre-test to the Post-test. I expected growth, but many students exceeded
my expectations. I thought that these two tests aligned with the objectives of the unit and they
showed the result of good note-taking habits, as well as the incredible effect that informal
comprehension checks can have while reading a text. I believe students were encouraged by their
Post-test scores and for many of them, it will hopefully give them the confidence going forward
for the rest of the year to not fear tests, but to embrace them as a means of showing what they
know.
