Lesson
Overview/Rationale

This lesson will help students understand that photosynthesis is a plant

characteristic. Students will learn the basic chemical equation of
photosynthesis, and how plants capture the energy of the sun and use it
to convert carbon dioxide gas (CO2) and water (H2O) from the
environment and use them to supply sugars and oxygen. Also they will
use Movie Maker to record their experiment.

Curriculum
Framework/Standar
d

Use a model to illustrate how photosynthesis transforms light energy

into stored chemical energy.

Learning Objectives

Student should use Movie Maker.

Students will do a scientific experience, record the observation
and analyze collected data.
Student will realize that plants remove CO2 and water from the
environment and produce sugar and oxygen.
Students will learn how to relate the color changes of a PH
indicator (BTB) to read the PH scale ( yellow for acidic
solution, Green for neutral and Blue for Basic solution)

Materials

BTB solution
Two test tubes
Measuring flasks
Live aquarium plant
Straw
Lamps
Laptops
Camera

Procedure

Students will divide into groups of three. One student is

responsible of taking pictures, the second one responsible for
following the procedure, and the third one should record the
data. The whole group should discuss the experiments and the
results
Students are responsible to take pictures for the whole
experiment and record all the data.
Students should measure and pour 20 ml of the BTB solution in
each test tube.
Insert the straw into the deep end of the liquid and bubble CO2
from your exhaled breath in each tube until a significant color
change occur.
Insert clump of plant into one of the tube.
Put the leave the tube under the bright light for 30 min.
After 30 min students should remove the tubes and interpret the
results.
Each group should create a short movie about the experiment
using the pictures that they took previously.

Assessment

In the last 10 minutes students should answer some questions that

discuss the results to make sure that they understand the experiment.
The questions will be about the BTB scale colors, the changing colors
in the two tubes and about the process of photosynthesis.
